Isn't this historically what happens? Able bodied soldiers who couldn't get jobs because all they knew how to do was fight people ended up fighting people for money?

I actually like the idea of taking modern or post-modern commentaries on the military industrial complex and putting them in fantasy settings. I had a setting idea that was half Golden Age of Exploration with nations financing bands of adventurers to go out to parts unknown, part MGS PMC explosion with all of those adventuring groups being branded companies, and part fantasy Shadowrun, with a handful of powerful "Guilds" that were essentially Shadowrun's megacorps, but selling things like potions and biomancy spells instead of biotech.
It was the kind of setting where you'd have a fantasy iPad.

"Adventuring Guild as PMC" is a neat concept and I wish it was something that happened more. Pathfinder Society organized play's setting *kind of* does it, but the Pathfinder Society isn't a PMC so much as a perpetually needy group of supposed scholars and explorers who send their recruits off to go do errands in exchange for money or support. They do end up getting embroiled in most of Golarion's wars and major events, albeit mostly against demons and shit.

I don't know abut /r9k/, but I do know how obsessed somee /a/nons are with purity. And the nip otakus are way worse than /a/

This just gave me an amazing idea for the next story arc in a campaign I'm running. Mid-way through the story, the adventurer market collapses, putting the PCs out of jobs. They then have to find a way to support themselves in society. Maybe start a war/demon invasion to put themselves back in jobs. The real question remains: what would cause it to collapse?

In my perfect world Swadia rules the world and everyone just party as hard as they can in the name of the King Harlaus.

You make me want to play Mount and Blade again, but it's just so boring. After a while you reach the point where your armies are strong enough to defeat almost everyone in the field and you can win some sieges. You have one major fief (castle or town) and maybe some smaller ones and after that you just... stagnate. There's nowhere left to go.
