The players only care about killing monsters, they don't give a shit what happens outside of combat. I'll be doing them a favor by giving them an excuse to fight things.

The edgelord thing isn't a conscious decision by them about what type of party they want to play. They're just too dumb to make characters with depth beyond pic related.

Well first off, Mr. Grumplekins, the beta only lasts the weekend.
Secondly, I'm getting a job interview and then two to three weeks of being processed, which means between now and the folks coming home I've done everything I can do to advance my professional career!
I'll probably go drinking for half of them. If I'm lucky, I'll kill my liver and me in the process while my life is looking like it's on the uptake.

Been thinking over a few homebrew traits for my group, thought I'd run 'em by you guys to see if they seem OP.
Civilized (Race trait, gnoll): You have spent most of your life in one of the great cities of humanity, having abandoned the ways of your people to enrich yourself. You begin play with Common as a bonus language, and gain a +1 bonus on Bluff and Diplomacy checks made against non-gnolls, but you also take a -2 penalty on all Charisma-based skill checks made against your own race.
First-Born (Race trait, gnoll): You are one of the few gnolls to survive out of your mother’s first litter, and are clearly favored by a demon lord to have such fortune. Once per day, you may add your Charisma modifier (minimum 1) to a damage roll.
I revoke my previous statement. This will not go poorly. This will go disastrously.

The first book has you trapped in an asylum for the whole time with nothing but your starting gear. It's really nothing special, though a clever GM could do something with the whole Freddy Kreuger-ish idea the module introduces.

That's part of the plan. In my industry however it's hard to take years off and stay relevant.
