when the tau stop asking before shooting and instead go straight to the planetary invasions or bombardment. the tau have developed a bit of common sense over the years so they do not always ask for your surrender if they know your faction does not do them. but as long as they accept the surrender and membership of backwater world guardsmen and PDF who are cut off from command and left for dead they will continue to maintain some of their 'good guy' reputation.

none of this changes the fact that if you refuse the greater good the tau view you as little more than a slave

everyone they trade with ends up getting taken over by them, allies end up getting attacked, and the tau don't respect neutrality. the only reason they've not invaded the eldar in full is because they think they're way stronger than they actually are.

that's not to say anyone else is better, but all races in 40k are equally terrible because they have to be that way to survive. the only morally ambiguous race is probably the tyranids. hive mind doesnt give a shit about politics or morality, it just wants to feed itself.
