Broken masquerade

How would the world recat to the masquerade being broken by the supernatural community? Like on national tv, mortals being shown proof that vampires and werewolves exist? I'm interested in running a world of darkness game where the players live in a world where masquerade has been broken beyond repair.

Read "Gehenna" and "Time of Judgement", Specifically "Reckoning".

Even Revised Edition VTM has a few words on what earth would look like if mortals discovered the existence of Vampires.
Even better, Watch Underworld: Awakening, It's LITERALLY set in a Vampires-Are-Discovered scenario

I don't have those books unfortunately. what can you tell me about them?

I typically throw the lore out of the old world of darkness. My group are a bunch of edgelords, and cringe at anything Judaeo-Christian.

1. Realistically, The Technocracy would cover it up immediately. Anyone involved would be snuffed out/black bagged and forced/Mind-Wiped into co-operation. Official statements would either ignore the event or call it a Hoax, "evidence" would be provided that there ARE NO BEINGS BUT HUMANS. All those responsible would either disappear, be mind wiped, or Be assimilated into the Technocracy's ranks.

But BARRING THAT

The Elders of the Camarilla and Sabbat would panic, the Sabbat regent declaring the hour of Gehenna to be upon us all, and mobilizing every Viniculum for war. The Camarilla would shatter, splinted by losing the only thing that kept them all together: the Necessity of the Masquerade. The Anarchs would push for "civil rights for Vampires". It's likely the Governments of the world would attempt to Eradicate the threat, bringing in Government Specialists like the people at Project Twilight and Task Force X to spearhead cleanup operations.

2. The Garou would hide if they hadn't been outed, and watch the Human's slaughter their ancestoral enemy. The Glasswalkers would make moves on the corporate holdings and real Estate of various vampires. The Silver Fangs would exclaim this ordeal as a victory for Gaia, the Shadow Lords would call it a travesty as it risks exposing them.

I'm unfortunately miles from
Home and my entire collection at the moment, Elsewise ID make scans of the relevant pages for you. Suffice to say Bad shit would happen to vampires given that they make up 1/10000th of the worlds population, and either A. Most would Die by Human Hands, or B. All would Die because the Massive purge would Trigger Gehenna.

...

But lets say that that I threw out the lore of the books, and there is only an unspoken rule just to not revel themselves to the mortals. but the truth comes out anyways. Kinda like true blood, though with less teen heart throbs. How would you think modern society would handle it?

The structure of the Technocracy makes it difficult for the Masquerade to be "permanently" broken. They're incredibly adept at spinning "REAL WEREWOLF CAUGHT ON VIDEO" into "YOUTUBE PRANKSTERS USE MOVIE PROPS TO PULL HILARIOUS PRANK" and then murder everyone involved.

The Technocracy nuked Bangladesh to cover up vamps.

They dropped a literal atomic weapon in anger on human beings. To cover up vamps.

Because the alternative was worse.

Think about that. That is how bad breaking The Masquerade is.

I wouldn't advise watching Underworld: Awakening. The first half hour claims to be some big 'what if vampires are discovered' thing but it pretty quickly just gets back to vampires and werewolves.

What did they think would happen if exposed?

>How would the world react to the masquerade being broken by the supernatural community?
Eventually, things would normalize and the "supernatural" would become mundane.
Which can be very cool to imagine and create.
I love seeing the merging of worlds in modern fantasy.

True Blood.

That was literally an Antediluvian that woke up.

As in, one of the few creatures that could easily fuck up the world on its own.

This. I feel guilty because I don't even hate Week of Nightmares. Part of me has always wanted to run Variant WoNs with other Antediluvians. Troile is probably my number one choice though.

>Troile

What a stupid cunt.

Fell in bed with a Baali and fucked up Carthage.

But a stupid cunt is most likely to chimp out and smash shit up, plus I like Tunisia's proximity to Europistan better than Bangladesh

**"Party's Over"**

"We night walkers, we've lived in the shadows long enough. It is time for us to join the world."

With these words Nathaniel Goodnight reveals the World of Darkness to mortals, removing the last vestiges of history's worst kept secret. This man, former slave, former rebel, former pirate and now a marked man for commiting the gravest sin by breaking the Masquerade, does not make this revelation lightly. It has been a century in the making.

What I suggest is an alternate world setting for the Vampire the Masquerade setting, where the pretense of a secret society is lost and both kindred and kine are forced to intermingle, with stories coming from the resulting conflict and drama. This is simply one way of thinking about it, and it need not ever happen. That being said, the possibilities this creates could be endless.

The scenario begins with a satellite uplink from Nigeria, now the telecommunications powerhouse of Africa. A lithe, thin-lipped Igbo man in a conservative black suit and fingers laced greets an audience of millions, simulcast over the NTA, CNBC Africa, Al-Jazeera and BBC World.

Over the next hour the world of the vampire is peered into. No magic tricks are used, no in-depth cultural explanations or vague threats of these nightstalkers. A simple plea is extended to the world, that they be allowed to enter public life. To corroborate his claims he provides three items: his record of sale as a slave in 1780, a photograph of him during the Duvalier dictatorship and a small vial of his blood for chemical testing.

This revelation may be unbelievable, but the president of Nigeria himself is on hand to assure his nation that this is in fact no hoax, and that the United Nations Security Council and the National Assembly have been notified, and that most of superpowers have been aware of their existence for many years. Why has this information been brought to light here, in Africa of all places? It is simple, the city of Lagos is to become a free city where the "night walkers" as he calls them are to be welcomed and free of persecution, a sanctuary.

The path to this point was not forged alone. Though the broadcast took no more than an hour to shock the world, the groundwork was laid over the centuries by two visionary men. Nathaniel Goodnight is an Igbo tribesman stolen from his homeland and forced into servitude. As Haiti breaks free from it's chains Nathaniel takes to the sea as a pirate and liberator of other slaves. His embrace into darkness by the Lasombra and the Sabbat leads to many years of struggle against Camarilla oppression, but in the end he feels it fruitless.

Then this firebrand Sabbat meets Haans Van Rijk, a Dutch East India Company mogul and Lutheran soldier of the Eighty Years War for Dutch Independence. His fight won his land freedom but he was no longer in the good graces of his Catholic Toreador masters whom he had secretly been bound for a hundred years. Fleeing his homeland for the Cape of Good Hope he is embraced by Dutch Boers and Brujah who eventually come to resist the British occupation.

How did he get far enough to set this up without being caught and slaughtered by those interested in maintaining the Silence of the Blood?
It's interesting, don't get me wrong. Just curious how he managed it.

A former Camarilla and former Sabbat decide the time has come for the Jyhad to end, and Goodnight (now a shipping baron) and Van Rijk (a real estate magnate in Lagos) join forces and use their considerable wealth and influence to mold the spawling island city into a place where kindred can be accepted, at least politically. The combination of oil wealth, booming urban population and driving poverty create a perfect breeding ground for a vampire city-state. The promise of an undead army and an influx of wealthy refugees who've acrued their fortunes over centuries could not be overlooked.

The rest of the world, however, does not fare so well. The Centers for Disease Control are unable to classify the origin of this bloodbourne disease, but when the nickname Systemic Infectious Necrotizing Syndrome leaks to the public a world of SINners are branded with an even more damning name in addition to their sanguinary habits. Despite this the kindred are classified by the CDC as human carrying a vector, and the government begins immediate quarantine. The Vatican issues a statement that these our our brethren and we must accept them as such, so long as they cease the sinful act of blood theft.

Camps are created, there is a violent convulsion as ghettos segregate these dangerous beings from causing more damage. Fears spread amongst the vampire world, the Burning Times are conjured into memory and many elders choose to flee into torpor, safely tucked away until the fires end. The world of billions of mortals to a mere tens of thousands of western Kindred, the answer is simple: submit, flee or die. Despite this massive revelation the East remains mostly unchanged, with the Kuei Jinn population much smaller and controls on the media tighter. This does not prevent upheavals but in general the world continues to spin.

And spin it does. Despite all the fears there are no mass exterminations. There is no wholesale destruction. The modern world does what it does best instead: segregate, disenfranchise, dehumanize. It will take human generations for this trend to change and vampire sufferage and rights to become universal, the length of time it takes for a child born into this new world without a memory of any other. Persecution turns to revolt and political action, and finally integration.

This process is not without it's casualties. It's main purpose removed, the Camarilla is rocked by dissention and mass exodus. In the end it reforms under a name formerly used for it's formal meetings: the Conclave. Through trial by fire it reforms in the Hague as a quasi-political vampire organization with the Inner Council still serving as an Executive but the Conclave actually elected by it's vampire constituents into a legislative body. The hoary Justicars evolve into a judiciary and the former Camarilla becomes the main source for diplomacy and integration, though more often it is used as a method by mortals to keep Kindred in line, a force for oppression.

The disintegration of the Camarilla power structure did not vacate the world of it's Elders, who moved to form a sect of their own, the Patricians. Still clinging to the old ways, many strange bedfellows are made as former enemies are bound once again by the old laws of Lextalionis, the rights of Praxis and the distinction between High and Low clans. Instead of integration this sect demands tradition and dominance, and in perhaps the most odd turn of events the fierce enemies of the Tzimisce and Tremere find themselves clinging to the same raft. Clan Tremere may exist as a whole but politically it splits down the middle between Patrician and Conclave, and the Tzimisce have grudglingly relented and allowed them entry into their sect, albeit as a Low Clan. Old habits die hard, but the war continues in the shadows only.

The Sabbat did not enjoy a resurgence from it's former ally's destruction. Instead the religious apocalyptic fervor of it's ritae and Caine worship alientated it's newly enfranchised people. Those who could not accept mortals as equals and clung to the more alien Paths of Morality become members of the Patrician sect, while the rebellion started so long ago continues on in the Cainite Brotherhood. Swelling with former Sabbat packs, Anarch refugees and growing numbers of Pander and Caitiff the Brotherhood keeps it's more militant roots and spreads more prominently among the still-urbanizing world. Brazil, India, Egypt, Nigeria, Indonesia, Mexico and many others become brotherhood strongholds with two bywords: independence and self-governance. This has led to a segregationist feeling among the rabble, whispers for vampire revolutions and kindred-led government.

In the end the clan dynamics are thrown in complete disarray. No one clan clings completely to one sect any longer, and many eschew the three sects entirely and choose to live their lives as private citizens. Discrimination continues to exist and they are still considered evil by some, monsters. Others shake their heads at these unfortunate, dirty creatures. Many like Van Rijn have used their undead talents in the world as vampires make excellent spies and soldiers. The resulting West African conflict threatens the balance for many years as Nigeria's Night Corps meet untrained, unrestrained caitiff mass-bred, as well as ghoul armies in the Niger delta. Despite UN intervention these "forlorn hope" armies still exist throughout sub-Saharan Africa.

Despite the whispers of other things that go bump in the night, most other populations of supernaturals are far more careful and much less populace than their vampire counterparts. In the end with all it's power the Technocracy cannot surpress the truth, and instead it does what it does best: it makes it mundane. It was by their efforts vampirism received it's scientific determination of Infectious Anthropophagic Necrotizing Disorder, with treatments currently ineffective. The other mages keep out of site, the Garou redouble their efforts with mankind now are of an enemy as ever. The World of Darkness continues on, despite the cat being out of the bag.

Goodnight and Van Rijn part ways with Van Rijn joining the Conclave and Goodnight pursuing revolution abroad with the Brotherhood. Lagos still remains the "Nightwalker Capitol of the World" for good or for ill. Beyond this the population of kindred now grows exponentially as many choose to join this lifestyle for the power and possibiity of immortality. Generations thin, knowledge of lineage becomes washed away in a tide of thin bloods, and inexorably the world is drawn closer to Gehenna in a slow, subtle way.

The Masquerade is gone, and the party is over. A new night begins.

Why don't they just wage asymmetric war fare against humanity? They could trash the economy and stage bimbings in every major city in a matter of weeks. A hellish post-apoc world would be better than unified nations if we're talking survival, especially if the post-apoc also meant that gross nature shit got trashed and those furry fucks got wiped out or offed themselves.

humans are pretty elastic creatures. we'd take a few weeks to wrap our brains around it. but it wouldn't take too long to see them as an everyday thing.

If people can't accept muslims, they sure as shit won't accept a secret army of Assamites

i don't mean accept as in "oh, yeah, i'd eat dinner with him", i mean accept as seen in District 9. the crazy shit like magic and vampires and spirits and all that becomes commonplace and we stop caring.

>ywn eat dinner with your cute, devout Assamite waifu

Why even live?

>the president of Nigeria himself is on hand to assure his nation that this is in fact no hoax

My name is not important...what is important is what I'm about to do. I just fucking hate this world of darkness, and the monsters feasting on it's carcass. My whole life is just cold bitter hatred. And I always wanted them to die violently. This is the time of vengeance and no unlife is worth saving. And I will put back in the grave as many as I can. It's time for me to kill. My genocide crusade begins here.

is this the starting speech of that super edgelord videogame where you're a terrorist that some how tanks eleventy billion bullets and then blows up a nuke plant?

Regardless, Good shit.

No

He blows up the nuke plant by typing in 666 and maniacally laughing with a distorted voice

Bro there are no vampires.

Denmark is a better way for this setting. Have people approach by boat, then goad them with sticks. Don't let them escape. If they do, they will become like gods - gods of the dance. But there are no such things. Hit them on top, then under. If they slowly rotate, then you will know.

Chaos
Panic
Disorder
Media frenzy
Then a celebrity has a breakup or a baby, and everyone goes gaga over that instead.

I think...
...many would say, that's bullshit
...many geeks/nerds have a collectiv orgasm
...the churches would say, "didn't we told that to you?"
...movie industry is expanding
...same goes to the pornindustry

just to name a few

...

>implying anyone will believe /x/-tier news from African media
Don't make me dump all the Red Pepper and Rolling Stones news stories I saved.
Actually all those crazy exposes about homosexuals aren't a bad model for media articles tearing apart the Masquerade.

So exactly what True Blood did?

It's a good way to go though, I agree. Just aggregate a few social panics to envision how the world reacts. Because ultimately, what'd happen is that people would simply figure out how to make money off of it, and go back to their lives. The ultra-conservatives would bemoan the state of the world, and the level of persecution that supernaturals faced would fluctuate with whatever views were in. But, fundamentally, the world would be shaped by "how can we use this to make cash?" And the answer would be "holy shit magic changes everything." Imagine the sweatshops you could build if your foremen were 12th generation vampires with just a dot or two in dominate.
