In addition to the story about the Giants calling them "Dwarves," I also recall something about "Dwemer" actually referring to "low" folk as in they live deep underground, but that getting misinterpreted at some point to mean that they were "low" folk as in physically shorter in stature.

In theory, you could, but:
1) It actually hurts a lot to pull on facial hair
2) Dwarves prize their beards. Your girlfriend is probably going to be leery of anything that could pull out individual hairs.
