I feel like references in general are okay. I can't off the top of my head think of any kind of reference that would upset or bother me.

I wouldn't do it, especially not if it's too blatant what the reference is, but that's mostly because it's lazy and usually doesn't look very good. Using just the colour scheme could be fine though. It might be cool to paint your Ultramarine successors blue, red and yellow, but it's usually going to look like shit if you paint Superman symbols on them.

I don't really see what the problem is here. These all look like good and somewhat original paintjobs. If it is something that bugs you then don't play that guy/gal when show up at the lgs. But you shouldn't let peoples taste in media affect your opinion of them. That's how you wind up not dating the girl from highschool who becomes hot and successful. It's reslly shallow and has practically zero affect on your life as a whole. If anything these people are better than you because they know what they love and want the world to know they love it.

Depends on the subtlety of it really. 40k is basically one giant love letter to every 60s-80s sci-fi and fantasy series already. Like, if you wanted to reference something like Berserk in your SW or KDK army, you could paint the eye stripe from the Hound onto your wolves' faces and it'd be a decent, not in your face reference. Painting your entire titan the scheme of an MLP character is obviously going too far though.

I like that. A very good paint job, and a subtle enough reference that people are unlikely to notice unless they're in the same boat as you. And even if they aren't you still have plausible deniability.
