Cyberpunk General

I posted a thread a few months ago asking for advice on a UK based CP2020 setting. I finally finished it and would love some feedback, it's only 5 pages long. Give me some critique, advice, spelling and grammar corrections, anything you have to say really, tell me if something doesn't make sense, and what I might do to fix it.

n.b: I haven't included all of the setting ideas I have in this document, but a lot of them. I just tried to establish a setting, why the world would be in a state appropriate for Cyberpunk 2020.

Also Cyberpunk General

He makes such awesome work.

I agree, I really wish the bulk of his work wasn't so sexual, his technique is brilliant, I'd love to see more male variants

bump!

>Of the 7 countries in the world that have dedicated R&D towards biotics, all declared private bionics illegal, for the purposes of economic growth - all governmental funded research and information in the field are locked down
I don't get it. What is that supposed to mean? Cyberware becomes more or less illegal in order to achieve economic growth? Doesn't make any sense to me. You probably want to rephrase that.

>Todd Lynn opens his show ‘Comely in Carbon’ at 9:34pm in London. Throughout the show, many amputee models were introduced, all with bionic replacement limbs
If cyberware research is super-secret and super-guarded, how does it come that some random fashion designer gets fully-functional cyberware?

>The fashion communities in ... as well as swathes of the general public, demand Lynn’s safe return
If there's an industry that has no power, then it's the fashion industry. Queer designers and anorexic models won't put much of a fight. And the general public doesn't care about them anyway. The amputees don't have much political or economic power either.

>The Todd Lynn protests are ongoing, bolstered by many more ‘missing persons’ cases throughout the last 8 months.
It gives the impression that everyone in the UK is manufacturing cyberware.

>‘Cyberpunks/Punks’ are barely ever apprehended or questioned, unless they have explicit, black-market Cyberwear
Makes zero sense with what is written in the previous chapters. There cannot be any black-market cyberware if cyberware is illegal. All cyberware is black.

>Buckingham Palace and many other royal residences are infiltrated by military agents... The operatives executed: King Charles...
Why in all the heck would the army kill the royal family who has no political power and benefits of a huge popularity? The shadow government should rather use them.

...

It's pretty cool to have a different setting than Tokyo or Hong Kong.

...

hey sargon

Anyone have that one post about the effects of super-cybernetics and people being wired all the time? The one with the player who almost shot some kids throwing around a ball because his senses thought it was an attack?

The amputees don't have much political or economic power either.
man you are one retarded and bitter faggot.

did a fashion designer fuck your girlfriend or something? or are you just jealous of people who make millions of dollar off the fact that not everyone wears their greasy cheeto-stained sonic-the-hedgehog t-shirt and cargo shorts everywhere, like yourself?

>points 1 2 and 4
This is one I've been getting a lot, and yeah I do think I need to make it more clear because I only said it once - it's PRIVATE development that is illegal, the government want to capitalise bionics for money, military power, and public safety. let's not forget that developing weapons and nuclear power in your garage is possible, but not legal - that's how i thought of it, something that the public shouldn't be doing without supervision.

>point 3
It's not about the fact that they have traditional power (at this point 2011 through 2016, the government are still keeping the illusion of peace), it's about massive swathes of people coming out in relatively peaceful protest and making the government lose face. also you know that there are more people involved in the fashion community than designers and models right?

>point 5
fair point, i'll look to fix this a bit

>point 6
this is a big misinterpretation of 'shadow government' and how much political power the royal family has - Firstly, the royal family can legally dissolve the Westminster government if they want, this is what the public has been encouraging them to do. secondly the 'shadow government' isn't some spooky evil organisation, it's a very real thing that exists in the UK, it's called the Shadow Cabinet.

>If cyberware research is super-secret and super-guarded, how does it come that some random fashion designer gets fully-functional cyberware?
again, it's not that this technology isn't possible to achieve, it's that the government is keeping tabs on those who do it, and are trying to keep it private.
>If there's an industry that has no power, then it's the fashion industry.
again i've already answered this.

>did a fashion designer fuck your girlfriend or something? or are you ---
on the contrary, I am very much a part of the industry so I enjoy writing about it, don't presume how I look just because I'm on Veeky Forums

...

I don't give a fuck about fashion designers. Good if some could make it and become millionaires doing what they like. It doesn't change the fact that 99% of them are queers - which isn't my business or my point anyway. My point is that no one is going to protest and riot because a fashion designer gets arrested. Mordecai Vanunu, the Israeli scientist who exposed the Israeli nuclear program, got kidnapped by Mossad agents in front of a bunch of journalists. Did anything happen? Did embassies of Israel got stormed by angry nuclear scientists and Greenpeace activists? No. Nada. Did we see widespread protests and riots when Ai Weiwei was arrested? Again, no.

>comparing protest culture in the western world vs the middle-east

regardless, this is fucking fantasy dude, it's just trying to establish a fun setting to play a game in with some semblance of cohesion

Middle East? Did I miss something? Vanunu is considered a traitor in Israel. If there had been protest it would have been in Europe - maybe in Italy as he got kidnapped in Rome.

Thinking about it, politicians who get strangled by angry protestors, protestors who gun down policemen and throw hand grenades during funerals, is pretty Middle Eastern. Here in Europe people are pretty docile. Remember those gangs who raped thousands of young girls in the UK over years? The cops didn't do anything for years. Finally, the whole scandal exploded. If something like this would happen to my daughter I would lynch the guys who did it and the cops who didn't do their job. And what happened finally? Fucking nothing. Some guys got arrested, most fled to whatever shithole they crawled from, and one or two officials got sacked. No riot, no lynching, no pogrom.

And when there are riots in the UK, it's because some people just need new TVs and new sneakers.

Or there's a football match.

Or when people have to pay more money.

Finaly a new CP2020 thread.
Im totaly new to CP2020 and i was looking for one to ask your for your advise and experiences.

For some reason i started playing Shadowrun (5ed) a year ago because i love cyberpunk and especially the neuromancer trilogy and so on... but im not realy happy with the whole system and world. All these fantasy and magic stuff, the realy massive amount of rules and also these over the top amount of futuristic stuff. (dont get me wrong on the last part, cyberpunk should totally be full of futuristig awesome technology and so on but in my opinion SR got much too far with all the wifi and godlike-superpoweres characters can unlock by cyberfication and so on... i like the neuromancer way. futuristic, but not so much)

Now im up to restart my shadowrun group by buying into CP2020 because we all agree about the fantasy and the rules-heavy part. But ive some questions before i waste a load of mony into these old gems.

1. Many people say 2020 is a realy combat-focused game. I like deadly realistic (headshot equals death and so on) but im a fan of the black trenchcoat style and im not realy into massive shooting actions as a main plot target. Should i still buy into 2020?

2. Whats about these "Archetypes" oder "Job" you choose from? I know there are classes like Netrunner, Cop, Loner and so on... and im a big fan of building characters totaly free. i hate the old DnD style where something like a class determines about who you are and what you do and so on... and some of these classes (rockstar?!?!?!) sounds totaly "stupid" for me.

3. Decking/Hacking. I love hacking in cyberpunk and i would totaly love to integrate much matrix action in my playgroup. We also had ideas about a group of Deckers/Netrunners who acty like a hackingroup for matrix only runs when we started with SR. Sadly hacking in SR was horrible so i would love to hear your opinion on how well 2020 did hacking.

Would be realy great if you could help me. Thanks!

>Archetypes
This I handled on a person to person basis. If people didn't like the achetypes that were set up, they could, theoretically create their own class. With your approval, of course. Then it just boils down to their skills.
>Hacking
While the whole "Netrunning" thing is a cool concept, hackers in vanilla would have to navigate some kind of maze, summon programs to help them and hack into shit while the rest of the group just kind of watches. Very boring and slows the games down to a crawl, in my opinion. I just made it skill checks.

>Hacking
So its the same bad think like in SR? how sad. I love the idea of a free visitable 3D matrix as in the neuromancer books but i hate these idea of bringen DnD-Maze dungeoncrawling and stupid programspellcasting into it. I mean come on, sure 2020 is from the 80s and the internet (and hacking) was more or less total scifi for them... but even the newest SR version using the same crappy idea how hacking works in a RPG system... this is just stupid...

I like your idea of using simple skill checks for hacking but dosnt this destroy the "matrix-feeling" in a cyberpunk story more or less completly?

Alternatively, you COULD describe what it is they do and see as they hack into places before and after the skill checks, again, this is just how I do it. I'm sure someone here will scoff at the idea of not making it like how the vanilla game wants you to do it, but for me, there's far too much wading through the rulebook and making extra-special maps for one or two people to make it enjoyable.

1. it is deadly realistic, 4dmg to the head WILL kill instantly, 8dmg to a limb CAN kill instantly. if you o the DM wants to run a low combat setting you can

2. I think the class system is more dark souls-y, your starting class doesn't really matter so much, it's more about how you grow. you can make your own class Oblivion style and just pick what skills you want to be your main ones, and what your class skill would be.

3. Sad to say most people including myself don't like how netrunning works in the group dynamic. when you want a netrunner player to do something the rest of the party basically has to sit and wait around doing nothing for quite a while. the best way to include them is to have an NPC netrunner working remotely with the group.

nice to see more people picking up 2020

Netrunners can also hack remote-controlled stuff without having to do the whole data-fortress hack. All they need is the corresponding program.

Some people play CP2020 very combat focused, other don't. It comes down to what you and your group like.

If you like building characters totally free, the standard CP2020 isn't for you. Personally, I got totally rid of character classes - this required to redefine some special skills and take out some others. At character creation I simply require the characters to have at least 12 skills. That's all.

CP2020 hacking sucks. The only good thing is hacking of remote-controlled stuff, like robo-cabs, drones and cameras. CP2020 isn't the only game with bad netrunning. GURPS and SR suck, just as much.

I also recommend you to get the stuff from the PDF general first.

>its deadly realistic
nice!

>nice to see more people picking up 2020
i love the sprawl books and i love cyberpunk, i dont like SR so... here i am and after all i think im happy to be here. i think i will try to reuse my "old" SR5ed books for meterials and resources for my upcoming 2020 playgroup...

>At character creation I simply require the characters to have at least 12 skills
Could you please give me a little bit more detail on how your group creates free characters? i would love to get rid of the classes befor even starting creating the first characters for my very first game of 2020

>hacking sucks
well this is realy sad... i may will change it like describes it.

hmm love that kind of pics
also yea, i will take a look on the PDFs too.

I like the system for 2020, but I've never cared much for the megacorps as-presented. Has anyone ever made a working alternate campaign setting?

Hey everyone, got a bit of a niche idea and would like some critique. So I'm going to be running a cyberpunk game and using The Sprawl.

The thing is, I really dislike the fact that there's no "difficulty rating" or "skill level" to the dive checks, which makes everything seem 100% arbitrary.

I'm thinking of wholesale hawking the Edge of the Empire dice mechanics into the Sprawl and letting the players put XP points into the moves they can do. I know this goes against the "PbtA" ethos and all that, but I want to try something new.

The attribute scores will have two green dice added for the check, so 2 ->4 dice, 1 -> 3 dice, 0 ->2 dice, -1 ->1 die. Then the dice are upgraded by the skill points, as per normal EofE rules

This allows
>challenges to be dialed up and down in difficulty
>challenges can be made more threatening while not making them harder (red dice)
>black/blue dive for situational stuff and replacing the "forward +-1" mechanic
>unexpected narrative monkey wrenches (Triumphs/Dispairs)
>FFG allies and adversary pregen NPC decks can still be used (since the dicepools would be equivalent enough)
And most important
>it all comes down to succeed/fail with advantage/disadvantage, just like The Sprawl

Outside of dice mechanics, I want to keep it moderately out of the box. But does anyone have any suggestions to what I've laid out? Any other Sprawl suggestioms?

Just take 12 skills from the list. If you don't know which one are useful, just take the classic classes as template. Then have the characters distribute 50 to 60 points between those classes. I fix an arbitrary minimum to skills of 2 and a maximum of 7 at character creation.

My group always did mercenary kind of guys. So you always had two or three weapon specialists, a netrunner or a dealer, and a techie.

...

thanks!

There's Hunter-Seeker, a sleeker homebrew version of CP2020.

Just copped these to GM my first game of 2020 in, sick or shit?

>Garbage geopolitics; the setting

>know-nothing troll; the post

>America and China sign a pact not to use nuclear weapons in event of a war
That is one of the dumbest things I've ever read in my life. The fact that they adhere to it is even dumber.

>1. Many people say 2020 is a realy combat-focused game.

Only if you want your players to be rolling up new characters every session. I usually do 1 fight every three sessions with the group I DM and they almost always get into it themselves - I try to leave the way to solve the problem open and not just reliant on combat. Also, only 1 of the archetypes is really combat focused. C2020 has exciting combat, but it really is'nt the focus unless you decide that everyone should be a solo with heavy arm and sub machine guns.

>2. Whats about these "Archetypes" oder "Job" you choose from?

They give you single special abilities for the archetype and a list of starting skills. You can easily scrap the starting skills and have your players choose their own sets. I usually just let them switch out skills they don't want, but allow them to use it as a baseline. The special abilities could also be individualized more - but they are mainly based on career, and determine starting cash.

>3. Decking/Hacking. I love hacking in cyberpunk and i would totaly love to integrate much matrix action in my playgroup

Trying to run hacking while having other players doing real world stuff can be a bit tricky. I house rule and streamline the netrunning stuff a bit, and try to get runners to focus on "controller" programs so they can be more focused on hacking into cameras and cars, opening doors, etc, rather than pure netrunning. I also take out the grid that runners are supposed to use to speed things up. But people complain about the netrunning system more than they should, it isn't perfect, but it is quite serviceable.

They do use weapons, it's mentioned in several places. Apparently you can't into reading comprehension.

Ctrl-Fing "Nuke" and "Nuclear" leads to exactly one obscure reference to them being used in WW3. That's a pretty big thing to just gloss over.

You're also very bad at writing wars, while I'm at it.

not the same guy but damn dude, give him something to work with, just saying "It's shit and dumb and I hate it" isn't helping anyone. Tell the guy a way to improve it if you know so much.

Well, for starters, ICBMs were used, and it doesn't state whether they were nuclear tipped or not. NATO has a strict shot-for-shot nuclear weapon policy, though, and upon warning of ICBM launch, nuclear tipped or not, the USA would respond in kind with strategic nuclear strikes. China's centralized leadership would have its head cut off, and the war effort at that point would slow to a crawl. As well, tactical nuclear weapons used on naval groups would leave neither side with a feasible navy about a month after the first use of the weapons.

For geopolitics; Russia is in a military alliance with half of the nations it invades, which makes no sense why they wouldn't just press for diplomatic annexation and resort to betraying their only allies. China somehow managing to come out of a nuclear exchange as a superpower makes nil sense (It would make sense for Japan or something to be one, as they were not hit by any nuclear strikes, seeing as they weren't party to the war). Even without the nuclear strikes, a major nation mobilizing its forces and industry, and evacuating areas near priority nuclear targets would absolutely cripple its economy for 5 or so years. Also, PRC demanding Taiwan and military blockade makes no sense without any mention of a hardliner coup or something to suddenly turn moderate Dengism in to hard Maoism.

I saw these for sale, I really really want them, but they're like £55 and I gotta pay rent, the ones in that pic were £8

I made a couple of small changes to deckers to make them usable in a party:
- While netrunning is a thing, corporate firewalls are *extremely* strong. You may get a way in through legwork, but generally deckers need to be on-site and connecting through interior wireless nodes.
- Netrunning is real-time, not "oh look that hour of real time was just a single second"
- Deckers can connect to the datascape as an AR overlay. They still have to deal with the ICE and other things running around, but they can contribute in fights/utility while being with the party.

It turns deckers into squishy wizards. If their remotes don't work, they can try and force the issue with their software, not to mention the possibility of turning security systems on enemies.

Note that while this *can* be overpowered, it's generally offset by deckers having to be with the party to get shit done. None of this split party crap.

You're wrong about so many things it'd take a half-course to correct you, but some quick notes:

>Well, for starters, ICBMs were used, and it doesn't state whether they were nuclear tipped or not. NATO has a strict shot-for-shot nuclear weapon policy, though, and upon warning of ICBM launch, nuclear tipped or not, the USA would respond in kind with strategic nuclear strikes.

No, it does not. NATO has a nuclear war plan against _Russia_ that includes tactical and strategic escalation, but a) it's not public b) it's not tit-for-tat and c) it doesn't include China. If China launched a series of DF-31 non-nuclear ICBMs at Guam or a US navy carrier strike group, NATO would have nothing to say about it. The US would absolutely not launch nuclear ICBMS in retaliation (at what exactly? the Chinese mainland? Hell no, that breaks the military target/civilian target escalation protocol). What the US would do is entirely unclear at this point, and strategists are speculating about what would happen. Read some Holmes.

>- Netrunning is real-time, not "oh look that hour of real time was just a single second"
so does this mean that the netrunner will be basically working as fast as he can irl? like if they were good enough at netrunning they could do it really quickly inbetween turns? I like this idea in theory, i like that the player won't be focusing on combat too much because they are occupied, much the same as the netrunner in-game would be, they would be more likely to hurt themselves through preoccupation. However it does run into the problem of 1. netrunning can sometimes take a LONG time, like over an hour in some cases (my old DM Richie said that he doesn't run them anymore because they had a 3 hour hacking session). There's also the problem of, if this is skill based, certain players will or will not be suited better to netrunning, like you could make the best netrunner ever, but if you take twice as long as another person with a less powerful one, what's the point?

NATO has a very clear shot for shot policy with nuclear weapons, that would stay for China. Or, at least on paper that's what they say their doctrine is. NATO would also not wait for ICBMs to impact to see if they were nuclear tipped or not. It would result in nuclear escalation. It's kill or be killed. Strategic targets would be hit, probably in Chinese pacific holdings, or instead of strategic retaliation, they'd do tactical retaliation.

>For geopolitics; Russia is in a military alliance with half of the nations it invades, which makes no sense why they wouldn't just press for diplomatic annexation and resort to betraying their only allies.

First off, what the hell is "diplomatic annexation"? Secondly, Russia was in a military and economic alliance with Ukraine until the Orange Revolution, then it invaded after Yanukovych got run out of town. Circumstances change; if any of these allied countries suddenly switched to a western/Chinese/Islamic government, Russia would invade. This is perfectly possible in places like Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, where Russia supports a small elite group of oligarsh

> Also, PRC demanding Taiwan and military blockade makes no sense without any mention of a hardliner coup or something to suddenly turn moderate Dengism in to hard Maoism.

Dengism is long gone and is not the current policy of the PRC. The PRC has repeatedly stated that blockade and invasion of Taiwan as perfect acceptable options to them in the event of the Taiwan government declaring independence. Perfectly plausible.

The timeline presented needs work and has some contradictions but your ignorant comments aren't helping.

Absolutely, completely wrong. Show me where "on paper" it says that the US/NATO would immediately fire ICBMS on a one-for-one basis if China launched ICBMS. Nowhere is this written.

You seem to know far less that you think.

>He doesn't know what diplomatic annexation is
It's when you annex a nation through diplomacy, not war. Come on, it's not that hard to imagine.

>Ah gee we're just going to let these 1mt bombs land on our heads and take a day or two to think about how we'll respond

That's just called annexation, not "diplomatic annexation". Your terminology betrays: your knowledge of geopolitics obviously comes from Europa Universalis and Civ5. Stop getting your knowledge of the world from video games.

>>Ah gee we're just going to let these 1mt bombs land on our heads and take a day or two to think about how we'll respond

Yeah, nobody has an answer to what to do if China launches DF-31s. That's why they're destabilizing and why the Quad was so concerned about them. There is no official nuclear response to a non-nuclear attack on US military assets.

pls fuck off back to /pol/. this is supposed to be about fun games

>NATO would also not wait for ICBMs to impact to see if they were nuclear tipped or not.

NATO isn't even involved in military responses in the USPACOM theatre. The short response time means it'd only be the US responding, and until an actual nuke hit US territory NATO wouldn't have any grounds to say anything until Article 5 was invoked. You really don't know anything.

You're right, I'm fucking off to sleep now. Hope the other asshole does as well.

sick. If I remember right I think there's a scene filmed here (or somewhere very similar) in the film Only Lovers Left Alive

CP2020 can be very combat focused if you want it to be. For example I once ran a campaign where my players were a white supremacist combat zone gang. The whole campaign took place in The Zone and wass all about gang warfare.

But I've also ran investigation heavy buddy cop campaigns for two players, so it's whatever you make of it

why is chrome so sexual

Accusing Hunter/Seeker of having a crappy background and completely occulting the fact that CP2020 is equally bad.

...

Read the thread dude, OP created their setting exactly because they didn't like CP2020's background. Also, I didn't say anything about Hunter/Seeker, I just wanted those two idiots arguing to leave so we could talk about the actual subject matter

US fragmented by Russian nukes soon. Cyberpunk future geopolitics are coming.

:^,

I was speaking of the two idiots who were polluting the thread.

Won't happen. The US are so polite that they even informed Russians and Syrians of the upcoming bombardment. If things really get hot between the superpowers, then we won't have a cyberpunk future, but a post-apocalyptic one - while it has its charm I prefer to fuck a sexy chromed gynoid rather than die slowly of radiation poisoning or getting eating by some cannibals.

My players never found that a problem. Deckers took their place in the initiative order like everyone else, and fights with ICE are over very quickly (Either the program breaks the ICE or it doesn't), and likewise back from the ICE (the runner's either protected by a shield, get forced out of the system, or get brain damage). If there's no opposition, they can hijack systems to help friendlies/harm enemies.

Most targets don't have offensive systems, of course. But having a decker can help party utility greatly, able to shut down cameras/open doors/whatever a remote can do, they can do better (at the possibility of brain damage).

i totaly love this pictures. are there more? where do they come from?

I like to have the characters being digital nomads constantly on the move between their working places (bodyguarding in Tokyo, exfiltration in Bogota, assassination in Kiev, heist in Hong Kong, etc.). They live from their suite-cases or car trunks, and have to stay in vehicles, coffin hotels, squats, containers, rented hangars or rented hotels and condos when they are flush and lucky.

After all what ive read here i asked my LGS for CP2020 and they realy had one copy on stock, but its the "second edition" and ive no idea what this means. The guy i asked about it told me its the original 2020 rulebook plus a Weapon-Catalog but im not sure if this is the real deal or if i should look for the "original" one.

That's the second German edition. I happen to have the first one.

I think the German 2nd edition is exactly the same as the first edition, but with a different layout and artwork. The content is probably the same, but the equipment list probably got expanded with stuff from Blackhammer's Street Weapons guide. The map from the 2nd edition looks excellent. I'd buy it if I were you.

Thanks for your advise!

CP2020 has three English versions: 1, 2, and 2.01. v1's a boxed set with the core book and a bunch of screamsheets (newspaper pages with an adventure on the back). v2 has those bound into the back of the book, and v2.01 is v2 with some of the art replaced by better pieces from the Italian version. v2 and v2.01 also contain a bit of errata.

I don't know what version the German one's based off. From what you're saying it sounds like the guy's telling you it's the core book with Blackhand's Street Weapons 2020 added into it. BSW2020 is a directory of stats for every weapon released for CP2020 up to whenever in 1995 they finished writing it.

The German first edition (1992) came out after the fall of the Soviet Union. I assume that it's based on Cyberpunk 2020 V. 2 or V. 2.00 because they both were written before, and in the introduction of the German edition, the authors write that they changed the background to incorporate the fall of the USSR which wasn't in the original edition (aber egal ob UDSSR oder GUS, die Aktion bleibt gleich).

By the way, Cyberpunk 2020 V. 2.01 doesn't have some stuff from LUYPSH, but it's the opposite.

I wish someone could scan V. 2.00 or V. 2. Such a person would be the greatest hero of the cyberspace. His memory would be engraved in chrome forever.

>Cyberpunk 2020 V. 2.01 doesn't have some stuff from LUYPSH, but it's the opposite.
I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to say here. LUYPSH has bits from v2.01 in it?

Yup. But it's only some clarifications about skills and minor stuff like that. Nothing ground breaking at all.

Can you recommend some great cyberpunk songs? Not for BGM but good songs to hear to get in a cyberpunkish mood?

Songs like this im looking for i like so far:
Archive - Bullets
Grendel - Timewave Zero
Ladytron - Destroy everything you touch
Placebo - Running up that hill
Shiny Toy Guns - Don't cry out

I had also compiled all the music I listened during the golden age of cyberpunk. Here's an almost complete playlist:

Other recommended artists would be: Ministry, KMFDM, Rob Zombie, Fear Factory, Killing Joke, Atari Teenage Riot, Hanako, Rammstein, Biohazard, Baal, Scorn, Michael McCann
