When you start 40k you like Ultras, when you take part in the community you start hating them for being vanilla and Ward's influence and once you dig deeper, you realize that Ultras are top tier if not the best.

I am a 40knoob and have a question for you guys.

If Eldar are smarter, faster, have better technology, more psychic, etc than humans....
...why don't they just do their own "Space Marine" programs?
Do all the same body modifications, same (or better) armor because they have better tech, etc.
You'll have giant stronger eldar who are better than space marines in every way.

Eldar aren't superior. Most of their tech was lost after their fall. The enperor used dark age of technology era human tech as well as his psyker abilities ( dark age human tech being on par with eldar shit and the emperor is the strongest psyker to exist) so the eldar can't do it. Roboute was only just recently able to make superior marines because he has access to that shit like Corax did.

And before "muh eldar are superior psykers!" it has been said in lore that he is the only thing stopping the warp from overtaking the universe/galaxy. Hence why the eldar are helping to save anyone like Roboute and there was worries about the throne failing. If he dies, everyone is beyond fucked. He played a gambit against chaos and now he's the last thing keeping it at bay. Another reason why everyone who knows is so pissed and tried to avoid the heresy. Because now everyone's fate, not just humans, relies on him holding that shit back because his legions turning to chaos made them stronger than ever and if he fails they will be impossible to stop as the immaterium and materium collapse and merge together.

Night Lords do fall to chaos. Only the Alpha legion avoids it since one or both of their primarchs may be alive and they believe that causing chaos to win will just destroy chaos because of the cabal. They are the only true renegade marines who avoid mutations and shit and just start up cults and use chaotic forces as pawns. Night Lords kinda scattered off and some fell to chaos, some didn't. At least one became a daemon prince at some point.

I suppose i prefer them over Alpha because there are pure raider groups who only act in self interest whereas Alpha dudes seem to be directed in a master plan.

everyone is susceptible, part of the corrupt mockery of their 30k form in 40k is that they have so many cells, operators, double agents, etc. that they don't know what they're doing, none of them do, and probably aren't doing anything unified anymore. Lots of them fall to chaos, its not like you can start a cult from a distance and not get touched by that.

If all you have to do to get redeemed is get killed fighting your enemy, in the galaxy's largest civil war, its not exactly hard. They didn't go very far into the deep end either.

The thing is, we know absolutely bugger all about post-heresy Alpha Legion, but then again those who actually fell to chaos are a radical minority, while it's certainly possible that some of them fell to chaos, it's just... we don't know, it's simple as that, we have no bloody idea.

No... Vulkan fought the Goff Beast/Prime-Ork and lost. The same Beast came out and crushed the last Imperial Fist underneath his gigantic boot after Koorland and buddies barely managed to kill the Death Skull's Beast/"Prime-Ork".

Alpha Legion is decentralised af. Whilst this ensures that they can never, or at least highly unlikely, be completely wiped out. It means 10'000 years of variations, evolution, and decisions make them susceptible to change - as is the case of all CSM legions.

This feeds into the high degree of independence and autonomy present in them pre-heresy both in a strategic and tactical level. On a tactical level all legionaries were able to voice their agency in an uncensored manner and were trained in every manner of warfare. On a strategic level their order of battle constantly shifted and changed, partially to meet emerging threats, and partially to confuse and dumbfound witnesses.

In the heresy there was a massive civil war within the alpha legion. Whilst some of it can be explained by: shattered legion, and loyalist elements; omegon v. alpharus split; and warlordism within the legion. I think that their decentralised nature really fractured them as a legion then.

After the heresy, what groups that still survived, probably continued to remain highly autonomous from any centralised command. A portion can be assumed to have stayed loyalist and joined the imperium, some joined chaos due to a variety of reasons (warlordism, exposure and corruption, and rejection of orthodox alpha legion doctrine), most I think stayed renegades. Their decentralised nature really means that anything could happen.
