People always complain that fantasy is usually 'generic medieval European flavored'

People always complain that fantasy is usually 'generic medieval European flavored'.

What's the alternative?

How about a setting that takes the prevalence and power of magic to it's logical conclusion

An oriental or asian setting?

Non-medieval and/or non-European flavored. But that's just off the top of my head.

Japan
Warring Kingdoms China
Central Asia nomads - mongols, huns and alike
greek city states
Stone Age
Napoleonic Age

...

any theology or mythos in existence

as long as stories have existed there has been the potential for building more stories on top of them

Are you serious?

Medieval Europe except the magic present in the setting has actually had an impact on the development of technology, infrastructure, society, and warfare and the presence of dragons and liches actually has an impact

Most of them are not even medieval. The genre is polluted by theme park faux-medieval-but-actually-renaissance/modern-without-guns

Post apocaliptic western

Industrial revolution era Japan.

Ancient african.

Generic ancient american.

Like... fuck, there is a lot of milage in
>what if x mythology was real.

I'm thinking of running Napoleonic-Era fantasy.

>what's the alternative?

Literally anything else, it's not that hard to find information about other cultures and civilizations

What would a setting with the magical and technological capabilities of a standard D&D setting look like? I can only think of Eberron or Arcanum as examples.

And then what would you say the threat of dragons, multi-dimensional horrors, living Gods, undead, multiple sapient races, etc add to it in a realistic way?

Fantasy based on any other place and/or period's culture?

The Tippyverse is a hypothetical setting that came into being when the implications of the large scale, long distance teleportation was considered. The premise is based on the use of the 9th level spell "Teleportation Circle" which allows for quick and efficient trade between cities, safe travel that does not risk being attacked by monsters and devastating military strikes. This leads to the centralisation of population in major cities, and the all but abandonment of other areas (as it was deemed impossible to effectively defend settlements against mass strikes from enemy nations using Teleportation magic). To solve the problems of providing the necessary food and water, magical "Create Food and Water" traps were created to feed the populations of these cities. Other magical traps (such as "Wish" traps that create 25,000gp every time they are activated) are created to smooth the running of these cities. High-level Wizards have control, as they're the ones with the capability to create these items, and have enough power to ensure they stay at the top.

America circa 1650ish minus guns plus magic? Frontiersmen exploring a new land full of completely foriegn people and cultures, with spattered settlements but ACTUAL civilization is still weeks by boat.

Nomadic tribal warfare on the plains on Africa

Kara-Tur needs some lore expansion I wanna make a Yakuza like fighter with a big ass two handed club.

The Arabian Nights are pretty cool, and have tons of cool shit for running games.

Renaissance era fantasy. Think the "Holy Roman Empire".

Also, you could have a fantasy world in the age of pike and shot.

The setting of 17th Century Eastern Europe was a time of anachronistic crazy shit as well. A wonderful time and place for fantasy.

I've always wanted to play in a South American mythos inspired setting.

...

Ever heard of the Tippyverse?

A) Weebshit
B) Shitskin cultures that nobody likes, including shitskins

Hi, reddit

I have a fantasy story getting published soon whose setting is based off the Protestant Wars of Religion in the Holy Roman Empire.

Editors are actually quite hostile to pure gothic medieval stuff these days

early hominids, toss in various tribal myths for the fantasy factor

also dinosaurs

No. Name sounds gay.

>implying anyone can stop people publishing.
Even the mosted hated people or controversial subjects get published.

Note that Tippyverse has the following postulates:

1. Epic Magic does not exist, it’s way too game breaking to try to make any setting that can work with it.
2. The deities are mostly silent
3. Everything else is pretty much as RAW (excluding some of the truly screwy things like drowning resurrections)

>Editors are actually quite hostile to pure gothic medieval stuff these days
Judging from the books that get published and rated in Times these few months, no they are not.

Anyone run any fun Stone Age games? How'd it go?

That user is care trolling. Trying to say medieval fantasy is naughty to get people uninterested in it.
Tumblr are just neurotic cancer

Are you sure this isn't a case of bad writing on your part? Most publishers will reject your work or not based on the very first page, sentence, and even format.

It's called a tetsubo son.
Get your fucking weeb right I swear to kami

Funny, this is pretty similar to what I was thinking. Not because of teleportation specifically, but because with create food/water spells there would be no need for mass agriculture and humanity would flock to major population centers for work, effectively forming mega-cities where nearly everything must be sustained by magic.

My guess is western fantasy most easily lends itself to the central conciet of diverse player races - humans co-existing with elves, dwarves and the like - and has a more storied history of mundanity coexisting with the use of magic, central to its origins in tolkein's works and the earlier norse sagas and Arthurian / Celtic legends. The tropes you think of when you picture "fantasy" are very informed by their western origins.

When you try to translate that to say, ancient Persia, feudal Japan, Africa, mesoamerica... even something more familiar but less modern, like classical Greece... a lot of people simply don't know where to start, and wouldn't be able to make something really authentic without the specific knowledge that comes from growing up in that cultural background and having a really solid grasp of its history.

And the lack of easy analogues to your standard fantasy races leaves most of your character options being humans, which ends up closer to something like a historical role play low-fantasy campaign, which tend to have a more niche audience.

Anyone can self-publish, yes, but I'm talking about the 'pro' fantasy short fiction markets, I should be more clear.

They talk a lot about diversity and representation and wanting new voices and wanting to move beyond white anglo stuff. But that's what a lot of fans want so some of it makes it through, much more often in the novel length than in the short length, though.

I've been published multiple times, user. I don't claim to be great or anything, I'm not a big name.

Tld;dr is that there is a heirarchy of complex societies.
Simple societies are harder to build a world out of and capture peoples interests.

It makes me upset that there's no real in-depth exploration of African culture/geography in a fantasy setting. Sure you'll get /pol/-types, but that shit is pretty interesting.

Also, the City Guard and military is made of Shadesteel Golems led by level 10-15 casters with invisible Warforged scouts linked with Permanent Telepathic bonds flying overhead and hanging out on every street corner

Do you really think if I was a weeb I wouldn't know what they call that giant studded club I saw on the History Channel once 12 years ago?
I just think Feudal Japan has a sick aesthetic for fantasy. Not really a fan of real life Japan, past or present.

>I just think Feudal Japan has a sick aesthetic for fantasy. Not really a fan of real life Japan, past

That seems a little too D&D specific but a wizard leading teams of constructs for important area's makes sense.

There are many strange things about this setting. Like why the hell enemy nations would send teleporting murderhobo squads to attack a farming village in the middle of nowhere. It's not to starve out the enemy, who can create food magically. Why then?

And if enemies won't attack bumfuck villages, they wouldn't get abandoned, and would even see immigration as people tire of living in a magical police state a under constant threat of some other magical police state Locate City Bombing them. This will see a proliferation of villages and small towns outside the magical city-states that just don't have anything the powerful wizard lords would want.

Real life Japan was a shitty backwards society of legitimate rapists and murderers with a penchant for offing themselves if they made a mistake leading to one of the most brutal and cruel imperialist nations the world has ever seen, slaughtering millions, many times in the most barbaric of ways and treating their prisoners and subjugated peoples as little more than target practice at the best of times.
And then morphed into one of the most hive minded cesspools of honor and saving face without seppuku as the only real change to society, women still need their own train cars to avoid being raped organized crime and corruption run rife through the system. Their legal system is one of the most fucked on the planet, proudly holding its 99% conviction rate high while innocent men and women rot in jail for life and unsolved murders get listed at suicides so they can preserve their badge of "effective crimefighting" for all the world to see. All as their society crumbles under its own hubris as half of men opt out, either through anime and dissociation or just offing themselves as their ancestors did when faced with a problem more complex than something that could be solved with a sorry or an IOU.

So yeah, real life Japan is shit and can go die, and will, because it's shit.
But in the world of fantasy we have talking trees and samurai swords that don't shatter on impact with anything harder than wood, so rp'ing as a samurai or monk from not-Japan is fine because I can actually pretend my character believes in honor and prosperity and not the real life Japan and Asia as a whole where they're all soulless monsters with no empathy.

If you can put an archive of their lore in an easily accessible place for everyone on the Internet, you might get that.

Wikipedia is too disjointed for that.

Trouble with writing fiction about exotic places is always research materials which is lacking and why most people just make up their own to compensate.

I took part in some.
Neolithic is a fun time, and much different from what most people tend to imagine when they hear "Stone Age". Just as a reminder, Mesoamerican civilisations were Neolithic.
Earlier periods I haven't tried, and honestly don't know what to run in them.

what the hell did a japanese person do to you?
Did one of them bayonet your grandfather or something?

depending where user lives this is highly likely, statistically speaking

Ancient Japan wasn't that bad, just what it became after America started sticking it's dick into it was bad.

Basically, we are THAT GUY in that ShindoL doujin. You know the one. The one that ends with the drug overdose.

The age of white bitches sucking black nigger dicks

If ancestor simulations are possible, you are probably part of one.

Japan was actually really bad at killing Americans, actually, and my grandfather was in Europe killing Krauts in the 3rd Armor at the time no less. So no, granpappy wasn't offed by the Nips.
But that's kind of irrelevant since even a cursory read of Asian history as a whole should be enough to make you horrified, and if that doesn't sell you, just look at modern anime, modern Japan in general, China. Just any part of China, from the giant fake cities propping up their housing bubbles to the cannibalism and dog eating and baby beating airquote Communist airquote paradise that is modern China.

Japan dug its own grave, yeah we meddled, but how in the fuck does demanding open trade result in genociding China exactly? We didn't tell Japan to go full murderhobo, in fact we quite discouraged that and they told us to shove it.
So we shoved a couple bombs up their ass and as they sit there in an ocean of blood and inhumanity they have the gall to cry to this day foul play and claim they din du nuffin.
Fuck those fags, two nukes was letting them off easy, we should have just starved them to death with a blockade and colonized the fucking place. Maybe the survivors would be humbled and actually learn to be human beings.

t. Korean

Korea is almost as bad, although I have a bit more sympathy for them in general.

But no all Asians are cunts deep down. No fucking porn in Korea? The fuck man.

China and Japan are two whole different animals. They hate each other. Point of fact, everyone in east asia hates each other. A lot.

As for 'humbling' Japan, arguably humiliating them is whats led to this weird series of complexes they have now. They're obsessed with work because they had to workworkwork to rebuild after WW2. They're obsessed with youth and highschool because they're so workworkwork obsessed that the last time they have any freedom in their lives highschool. They have the wierd age-nepotism thing going on because once upon a time it made sense to reward long time employee's plus a history of senior veneration anyway.

Japans problem is it never underwent any cultural revolutions after WW2, not to the same degree America did

I know all about Japan's inferiority complex for the mainland, believe me. Doesn't really matter in the long run. Two sides of a coin made of feces is still feces, even if the graphic changes.

If we accept that hypothesis, how did Germany also get firebombed to the ground and occupied and end up with a completely opposite culture (no youth obsession, lenient work hours, admission of past war crimes)?

I once hated Asia as much as you did.

I now think they're okay.

I don't know what happened in between me hating them and thinking they're okay, but your opinions remind me of my own not so long ago.

I think you ought to calm down. If it were up to me, every non-white on Earth would poof away, and we could go back to debating who was actually white. But until we reach a point where a single person can unleash mass genocide, you're going to have to stop being angry at other people just to make yourself feel superior.

I like your style.

On a scale of 1 to White Asians rank about a 6 to me. They can function in an advanced society they're just robots made of flesh is the problem.

Thank you.

I find they tend to lack creativity too. Tend to, being the key word. Because someone has to make all those bizarre things that come from Japan.

>unironic edgy /pol/ posting

They got extreme scat and bdsm obsession.

Don't forget the Germans are completely suicidal and won't exist in a few generations.

Are there any good central asian settings?

Conan the barbarian has a good central asian setting

>the first few crusades had zero/almost no pplate

I've been lied to

post apocalyptic ultra-magic

The group are immortal wizards who travel unstable planes of reality in search of other immortal wizards, since the plane of existence where their home was was destroyed in a violent wizard battle.

Along the way they might stumble upon bubbles of realspace where ordinary non-wizards live in relative peace, usually with some kind of quest where they could really use the help of a bunch of wandering immortal wizards.

This is my exact home brew setting

Here is the problem. "People" aren't requesting this stuff. A small VERY vocal community is pushing it as part of their agenda, writers and editors alike.

Most people just want good old fashioned entertainment and escapism and give zero fucks as to what society it's based on. Good writing is good writing.

But in today's society it has to be good writing with a black quadriplegic transexual Jew as your main character or you're labeled as unoriginal and white male, even if you are neither of those things.

Writing classic fantasy sometimes just means that's the shit you read and that's the shit you like. Writing is hard enough without trying to force everyone else's pet agendas into it.

Tell me more

but the typical crusader is in mail and wearing a greathelm

Eskimo shamanistic setting
Aztec or Mayan setting?
Mongol setting?
Nepalis or Hindu high fantasy setting.

The plague is magical and has wracked Europe to such an extent that the only places still habitable are Asia, past the trade boarders of the silk road, (which have been quartered off by a massive edition to the Great Wall), and closed under penalty of immediate death by the Imperial Khan via his sorcerers who have already purged the plague from their lands, and Africa, which has less manpower but retains immense strength as its tribes peoples are as yet unaffected. This causes a mass exodus into the African continent by any European power still able to move its people. Medieval continental war ensues over land and resources as crippled powers push into the middle east and try to contend with an ever dying populace while an entire network of united middle eastern warlords are hell bent on not letting them pass on to greater Africa
