>>Party has had success as of late, seek to acquire keep to call their own
>>hear of an old abandoned island town/ stronghold in friendly territory that has recently become occupied by an enemy navy
>>set sail to said stronghold, intent upon kicking out navy and seizing a new base of operations
>>arrive at island, things are not as expected
>>instead of navy occupied stronghold, find _____
>>Party now has to contend with _____
>>what party thought would be a run on an enemy keep turns into a tower defense against ____ to defend their new home.

What does the party find? What are they defending against?
The larger (physically, I'm thinking a huge full scale battle), the better

A Behir has decided to make the keep their new nest, killing everyone (navy) inside, except for a few scared survivors.
Party arrives while momma is out looking for food. finds survivors, plus a nest of large eggs.
Momma comes back, party has to defend itself against

>>Succubus enslaved the navy.
>>Initially friendly with party, attempts to bring them into her harem.
>>When that fails, tries to enslave the party via charm
>>When the fight inevitably breaks out, succubus manages to escape, swearing revenge on the party
>>Party shrugs it off as per usual
>>Few days later, weird things start happening around the island
Succubus has set up several "hellgates", to summon forth a constant stream of demons / devil's to try and retake the keep. Right as PCs discover, succubus opens all at once, letting forth hordes of demons and devils to fight beside her to retake her "home"

This, but vampires

Rats. Many rats.

The keep's library is covered in massive, fresh webs. Spun by it's occupant and care taker.

While terrifying to gaze upon, if they don't attack him right away. The sentient giant spider that lives there assists them where he can and tasks them with quests to collect new books for his collection.

Naval mage was attempting to drop a permanent teleport circle, instead accidently opens a portal to the underdark...
Now the whole area is crawling with stupid, sexy spiders

instead of navy occupied stronghold, find
blood stains everywhere, not a living thing in sight
party now has to contend with
horrific lovecraftian shit
tower defense against giant squids throwing rocks

Navy has been mind fucked by an aboleth, who has taken up residence in the deep lagoon
When PCs clear out navy slaves, aboleth is still there lurking, to try and mind control PCs. When that doesn't work, start sending sea abominations after them

Behemoth has taken up residence on a far side of the island. Curious by the new navy inhabitants, one of the pups goes to investigate... When provoked by the navy, wipes them out.
Players arrive to a bloodbath and a curious behemoth pup

Bump.
Curious what else people come up with

The keep is infested with crabs.
Giant crabs.
Giant, giant crabs

OP here. Some great ideas thrown around.
FWIW the game takes place in a pirate setting... hybrid pathfinder/ 5e ruleset

The fort was the scene of a ancient horrific battle that claim many guards/saliors lives and is now cursed. The entire island is now possessed with the ghosts of the original inhabitants turned insane banshees and the ghosts of the newer army who may still retain some shred of humanity.

Players plus maybe ghost allies have to fend off hordes of hell-damned spirits while they battle toward the keep's underground bunker and source of the curse.

continued
The enemy army when they first arrived also had to fight of the banshees attacks/possessions and tired to end the curse by going to the source. plot twist the source is a lich's pahltarcey that insta killed them.

Lusty Argonian Maids.

>Behemoth
>Medium sized

+1 for lich
What other mind controlling / horde generating monsters we got?
So far we got the classics:
>>lich
>>succubus
>>lolth/ drider
I'll throw in mind flayers. Works with What other mind altering / mind control from the shadows monsters are we leaving out? Things that could take over an entire town but remain in the shadows... then when the time is right unleash massive waves of monsters?

>>homebrew
>>getting it right
Pick one

>Turning down a succubus's offer to be part of her harem
Idiots.

Also, I need to look into this Legend of the Cryptids thing. I keep seeing really good art with that logo on it.

They find peaceful nation living is heavily fortified ancient castle ruins. They are beautiful, confusing and have a bit outlandish architecture. Island has two to three beaches, and is mostly full of clifs, jungle and mountains.

(for European setting make castle Japanese, Chinese or Indian or vice versa)

They have to contend with another Explorer - sir Reinhardt von Ackenwald, who arrived days before, and wants to claim the island for his king.

Both groups disrupt by sheer coincidence ritual to appese undersea gods. And the siege starts. You split the defense with Reinhardt, the better you do the more locals will love you... But if Reinhardt fucks up you'll have an easier job.

Sea monsters, drowned zombies, and finally a cthulhu appendages attack the island.

Last enemy is a element of storm - huge humanoid made of tornados, lightning and debris. you have to intercept him on water - if it reaches the island it will be destroyed.

Players have to cooperate with npc, but at the same time make him fail and take care of his part of job to sway villagers to their side.

Both of you might hire help of pirates if you know some - either to help defend, or to betray other contender.

There is also a volcanic island God ready to help. But who knows what he will demand in return.

>Find
Strange things are going on with the enemy navy, thin coat of slime on castle floors, uncanny way certain sailors move in unison, vacant stare in their eyes

>Contend with
An undead Aboleth lich from ages past who communicates through imitating those whose souls or minds he has consumed. The royal naval force is coming more and more under its control...

Defend against
>A horde of oncoming aboleths and their minions summoned from the depths to this ancient prison to free their liege so he may spearhead the reclamation of their eldritch empire. If they can figure out the secrets of the old keep/prison they might seal him in for good or even destroy him, and if they can free the royal navy from mind control they may have a fighting chance against the oncoming undersea legion of old.

Giant enemy crabs. Better figure out their weak points.

>Idiots
maybe being succ'd to death isn't their definition of good times?

>seek to acquire keep to call their own
Deck of many things offers this, and they could just as easily recruit a jester to sponsor as they escort him and earn a percentage of his earnings, those guys pile up money fast.

If she killed the people she fucked, then she wouldn't have a harem. In fact, maybe she actually does the opposite and makes all her concubines immortal so she can enjoy them forever.

>Not making the succubus join your harem instead
Might as well go to IKEA and buy yourself a cuck shed now mate.

You seem to be assuming her harem is all-male instead of having an equal distribution of men and women so everyone can play with each other if the succubus isn't using them.

Damn. Dracula turned THAT down?
He could've been breastfeeding for all eternity.

>Better figure out their weak points.
It's an older meme, sir, but it checks out.

What's the name of that book?
Thanks in advance
