Playable Necromancers in Dungeons and Dragons 3.5e?
For official base classes, we have:
-Wizard Necromancer (school specialist)
-Three variants of the Necromancy specialization in Unearthed Arcana including either a Skeletal Minion, Undead Apotheosis, or Enhanced Undead as a class feature.
Please note, that 'Van Richten's Guide to Lich' states that liches are no longer limited to their dropped schools of magic if they were specialists in life, so that's something to look forward to.
-The Wizard Necromancer Variant in Dragon 357's Unversed Arcana - The School Mastery variant for Necromancy, swapping out getting familiar for casting chosen school spells at +1 caster level, and all undead madde with [evil] descriptor spells gaining temporary HP equal to your caster level, combine with Enhanced Undead's swap out extra spells per day as a specialist for +2 to STR and DEX and HP per HD in Undead you make, and you've a very decent Necromancer Wizard to use.
-The three 'Dark Magi' Necromancer base classes from Dragon Magazine 312, Deathwalker, Fleshcrafter, and Soul Reaper.
-The Dread Necromancer from Heroes of Horror, popular choice solid class to level 20 and provides base Lichdom as a class feature.
-The Death Master base class (Orcus followers only) from the Dragon Compendium Volume 1. Provides base Lichdom as a class feature.
-A Cleric with some of the following Domains
>Death, Deathless, Deathbound, Decay, Envy, Evil, Hunger, Undeath, Undead, Vile Darkness (referred to as a Darkness domain but is different), Gluttony, Corruption, Repose, Repose(2(there's a second one of this)) Spirit, Pestilence, Necromancer (Blood of Vol) and the seven deadly sins domains.
-The Binder class with choice vestiges such as Acererak, Tennebrous, and some other vestige I don't know about (Tome of Magic).
-The Spellcaster class from Unearthed Arcana (non-descript class built around bonus feats and not class features, build appropriately).

Gray Orcs Wizard, Illusion specialist.

-Nightstalker (Dragonlance - Races of Ansalon)

d20 unnoficial base classes
-Necromancer class from 'Secret College of Necromancy' by Greem Ronin Publishing
-Flesh Mage from Sourcebook, 'Magic' (d20, AEG, 2002).pdf

For official Prestige Classes (PrC) we have:
-Thrall of Orcus (Book of Vile Darkness).
-Walker in the Wastes (Sandstorm) Provides Dry Lichdom, which is basically being a Tomb Kang n sheeit, multiple cheaper phylacteries at the cost of longer rejuvanation time, can literally harvest limitless salt and use infinite pocket sand with this PrC.
-Pale Master (Tome & Blood - Libris Mortis) Suitored to Arcane necromancy users or in choice builds, is easy to get fluff wise, and useful becase fuck black onyx. I also suggest using it's hombrew remake which features some of it's qualities shown in Dungeons and Dragons Online dnd-wiki.org/wiki/Pale_Master,_Rebuild_(3.5e_Prestige_Class) This PrC also has an epic level variant, mentioned fucking somewhere.
-Fleshwarper (Lords of Madness) Mad science so hard you go fullblown aberration, graft dead people to yourself!
-Red Wizard of Thay (In campaign perks of regional feats and background should apply).
-Master Specialist (Necromancy) (Complete Mage).
-Necrocarnate (Magic of Incarnum PrC, is shit).
-Master of Shrouds (Libris Mortis) control of incorporeal undead, maximize ghost blowjobs.
-Tennebrous Apostate (PrC for Binders that use the Tennebrous vestige).
-Soul Eater (Book of Vile Darkness) self explanatory.
-Dirgesinger (Libris Mortis) summon undead with guitar solos.
-True Necromancer (Libris Mortis) don't ever use this.
-Horned Harbinger (FR Faiths and Pantheons) Undead Army Maker
-Companion of the Dead (Gnomish Class with progression unto undeath)
-Darklight Wizard (Kingdoms of Kalamar Villain Design Handbook)
-Death Dancer (Kingdoms of Kalamar Stealth and Style) Thriller.
-Lady/Lord of the Dead (Web Enhancement - Dead Life)

Master Alienist roleplay build
Wizard Conjurer (Specialist)
Unearthed Arcana Conjurer Variant - Enhanced Summoning (Ex) A conjurer using this variant does not gain bonus feats for advancing as a wizard.
The Master Alienist takes 5 levels in it's wizard class
At 1st level, a conjurer using this variant gains the Augmented Summoning feat for free instead of the Scribe Scroll feat.
At 5th level, the conjurer's summoned creatures become particularly tough to dispel. Add 2 to the DC of any caster level check made to dispel the conjurer's summoned creatures. At 15th level, this addition to the DC increases to 4.
Enters Alienist Prestige Class
For Metamagic secret, Alienst takes either
Coercive Spell (Drow of the Underdark, page 47): Spell deals a -2 penalty to Will saves for 3 rounds, non-cumulative. - Force use with Ravenloft Horror check tables or madness Check tables and other stuff, seeing as you're completely wrong looking
Extend Spell
Imbued Summoning (Player's Handbook II, page 92): Any creature created by conjuration (summoning) spells can have any spell you know of 3rd level or lower with a range of touch cast on it auto-magically.
Transdimensional Spell (Complete Arcane, page 84): Allows a spell to affect an incorporeal creature, creatures on the Ethereal Plane or Plane of Shadow, and creatures within an extradimensional space within the spell's area.
Irresistible Spell (Kingdoms of Kalamar Player's Guide, page 87): Remove all saving throws from your spell. Yes, you read that correctly. Fuck you Rogues and Evasion. This feat becomes Blue if playing with errata, which simply adds +10 to the DC of the spell. For a +4 adjustment, a bit steep. Useful with spells like Insanity
Alienist levels to 10 in the PrC and becomes an outsider, and is subjects to benefits her kind provides
Alienist is now Level (5) Conjurer and a Level (10) Alienist

If the Master Alienist levels it's wizard levels to 10, it's summoned Pseudonatural creatures gain an additional +2 bonus to Strength and Constitution. and is now Level 20
Alternate choices for your next 5 levels include:
The Master Transmogrifist PrC where you additionally gain the shapechanger subtype, effectively making you Nyralathotep or some other effective horror from beyond space and time, allowing for indefitite use of Alter self
Wild Mage PrC, as you are now an unpredictable being of Chaos and Madness
Master Specialist, gaining Skill Focus, Spellcraft, at 1st level, the choice of a spell from your chosen school of magic to add to your spellbook (Chose something really complimentary of your abilities) at 2nd level, Greater spell focus at 3rd, Conjuration: Any creature you summon or call appears
with extra hit points equal to your caster level, at 4th, and at 5th, casting spells from your chosen school one CL higher
Take One level of wild soul to qualify for Ultimate Magus to increase one's Caster Level with arcane spells by 2
Take Levels in Geomancer to further your abberrant apperance

Other:
Worldmeet glade from complete mage grants a qualified spellcaster the ability to summon an enhanced version of any creature he could normally call with a given summon monster spell. The creature gains +2 hit points per Hit Die and a +2 bonus on all saving throws, checks, attack rolls, and damage rolls.

>Take Enhanced Undead from UA
>No additional spells per day for being a specialist in return for All undead crated with extra +2 to STR and DEX with +2HP per HD of said undead
>Take School Mastery
>Swap out Familiar for +1CL for Necromancy spells cast, and Temp hitpoints equal to my CL for all the undead I make
>Have not lost my bonus feats as a wizard

>Take Corpse Crafter at 5th level = a whopping +4 to STR and another 2 Hit point per Hit die
>Any undead I make now get +6 to STR +2 to DEX and +4 Hit points per Hit Die, and now get 5 temp HP to boot
>Dragon Magazine's Dark Magi page has Necromantic feats for Wizard specialists such as stuff I get from my wizard bonus feats
>Death Curse
>Literally the same as LM Destruction Retribution, but requires 25GP and day of preparation on undead subject to do 1d3 per 1 Undead (min 1d3) HD of Negative energy damage within 10 ft spread, also having the undead creature treated as 2HD higher for purpose of control. req DC Refx 15 for half dmg
>Destruction Retribution
Benefit: Each undead you raise or create with any necromancy spell releases a burst of negative energy upon its destruction, dealing 1d6 points of damage plus an additional 1d6 points per 2 Hit Dice to every creature within a 10-foot spread (Reflex DC 15 half).
So at level 15, you can make super suicide bomber undead and stack them with actual explosives and a delayed fireball to boot, but Destruction retribution is better, so there's no point in death curse as it's a waste of bonus feat and levels.
>Graveborn expert
>Share your consciousness with skeleton or zombie and have it make skill checks with a +4 bonus to STR or DEX at the cost of it classing as 1HD higher as you use this ability
Mite b cool
The rest in that article are various preptime feats, but this has uses

>Graveborn Warrior [Necromantic]
>Grant a Single Skeleton or Zombie made a Single Feat it can qualify for at the cost of only costing 1 more HD to control, and it isn't a preptime beyond 25 GP of crushed gems as a spell component
Holy shit, that's fucking great under circumstance, probably the best even.
Alright, possible for level 10 as a bonus feat
>Planar Touchstone feat
>Gain base ability of the Planar Tocuhstone
aight, what's on off-
>There's a fucking Touchstone that gives you the granted power of any Cleric Domain you want as the permanent base ability and also it's spells to cast using your CL and Wisdom score + 10 of the spells level
>Is a Level 8 encounter site on Mechanus located in a library organization dedicated to fucking rules lawyers who want to get all the rules so they can cheese their way to becoming deities
Holy fucking shit this is hilarious and broken, I fucking love it, all those domains and their powers to chose! As the location encompasses the multiverse, blood of Vol is also on the menu, +1 to necromancy spells! There are other touchstones too, but I'll have to look into that separately
>Dusty Conclave
>Temp HP per day equal to Wisdom bonus
>Higher order is fast healing 2
>Is the same guild as the Dry Lich PrC
Shit son, goes hand in hand with that.
Could probably dip out to 4 levels of master specialist after this if I took Graveborn for 10, get some nice turn resistance, or keep straight, and get planar touchstone at 15, or forgo graveborn for touchstone at 10 instead and look for other stuff to bolster necromancy.

10 in master Specialist mean all Undead in 60 ft get fast healing 10 for 5 rounds every time I pop a necromancy spell, so if I pick Touchstone at 10 then take master specialist to 10, things look pretty solid barring my lack of item creation feats, but you know, thinking of the Epic level is a bit out there initially, So I've got a necromancer with some of the worst possible skeletons and zombies to fight, and if I took things to the epic level I could get Destructive retribution to make things real hellish, and there's still the matter of touchstone base abilities to scroll through

Lvl1 Wizard - Necromancer
Enhanced Undead - Variant
School Mastery - Necromancy
All undead crated with extra +2 to STR and DEX with +2HP per HD of said undead
No Familiar, +CL to Necromancy and temp HP equal to Wiz CL
>Still have Bonus feats as Wiz
Lvl5 - Corpsecrafter +4 to STR and another 2 Hit point per Hit die
+6 to STR +2 to DEX and +4 Hit points per Hit Die, and now get 5 temp HP total for any undead made
Multiclass into Death Master get-
lvl1
Abyssal as bonus language
Rebuke Undead times per day 3 + CHA Mod + 2 bonus if KNW Religion 5+
Prepped Arcane Spells Int + 10 of spells level, prepped in technicallly shorter time to all spellcasters ingame, (also dependent on race and things that affect sleep cycles) opposed to the 8 hour minimum use DC against D.M's spells is 10 + Spell level + INT Mod + Bonus for high INT
Can use sacrificed blood as a spell component to bypass spell failure in armou
Gets a Fucking Undead Minion which is any skeleton or zombie post skeleton template CR1, just like the class variant for wizards, but better, because it gets unique feats as you level and doesn't cost anything and even gets a fucking STR&DEX bonus as you level it, only difference with this and the Variant is that it doesn't gain fighter levels
>All this at level 1
Necromancer(5) Death Master (5)

It wasn't in 3.5, but a while back I played Jeremy the Neckbeard Wizard. He was 31 years old, obese and ugly (had the hindrances for both in Savage Worlds). He carried a bottle of Mountain Dew which was the focus of his acid splash / melf's acid arrow spell, and also was a necromancer (the main reason I played him). I was constantly obnoxious with him. He was a radical atheist, constant fedora-tipping and misogynistic comments, smelled awful and I made sure to remind the GM of it every time we met an NPC, and generally was a douchebag. Later on I planned to take teleport and purchase a katana for the "nuthin personnell kid" move, but we never got that far.

Undead Minion is either a wolf skeleton or a zombie troglodyte Bugbear Zombie, Ghoul or Owlbear skeleton etc CR1 skeleton or zombie with 2 + HD & STR&DEX with + Turn resistance and 1PD Unholy Might ability grants it another +4 STR + bonuses to saves

Have access to 3rd level spells death master from DM spell lists and again, the Wiz bonuses to undead creation also help

Get master of the Dead, so Intelligent undead that fail a save can't hurt me at all for 24 hours, effectively, Lichloved as a class feature with willsave and use on all undead

One could take things up to Dread Necro and get the Fear Aura at DN (5) Charnel Touch, Negative Energy Burst and a choice Advanced learning divine spell they might want to cast, in addition to saves but It might be an idea to leave it at that, and either choose 5-10 in DN or 5 in DM and move back to wizard, where you can get Graveborn at Wizard (10) or a Planar Touchstone ability of choice.

Yeah, Necro(5) Death master (5) and Dread necro (5) for some kind of All necro ability specialist or something.

Going with another 5 in Nec after 5 in DM, we get Planar Touchstone feat + Catalogues of Enlightenment with a choice Cleric Domain Power such as the Blood of Vol's Necromancer Domain's +1 to necromancy spell CL,or Evils benefit to [evil descriptor spells] or something else beneficial, such as The Shrine of Acererak which basically gives you lichloved and a once per day two sentence suggestion in 50ft to a single undead as the higher ability, meaning you could only take 4 levels in Death master to avoid Unholy Might and master of the Death, Death Master benefits but keep the changes to the undead minion you use to save the level for wizard or something else

Wiz (Illusionist) takes UA Specialist Wizard variants Shadow Shaper & Illusion Mastery (Ex) + School Mastery Illusion = Classic 2e styled Shadow Mage.

Top it all off with master specialist to make it even cooler,

d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/specialistWizardVariants.htm

Take Wiz Illusion with chosen variants up to 10th Level.

Shadow Shaper (Ex)

LVL1 get Hide as class skill.

LVL5, Add his Int modifier (in addition to his Dexterity modifier) to his Hide skill checks.

At 10th level the illusionist's illusions become infused with shadow stuff from the Plane of shadow, making them more realistic and more likely to fool the senses. The save DCs of the illusionist's illusion spells increase by +1. This benefit stacks with similar bonuses, such as from Spell Focus.

An illusionist using this variant does not gain bonus feats for advancing as a wizard.

Illusion Mastery (Ex)

An illusionist using this variant automatically adds two illusion spells to his spellbook every time he gains a level that grants access to a new spell level. Furthermore, any time the illusionist learns a new illusion spell, he treats that spell as if be had mastered it with the Spell Mastery feat.

School Mastery (Illusion)

All Shadow illusion conjuration spell effects that are partially real are now 30% as strong as the real thing

-Master Specialist (PrC) Complete Mage

Skill Focus (Spellcraft): At 1st level, you gain Skill Focus (Spellcraft) as a bonus feat. Stack as per suggested with your 10th level benefit of Wiz

Expanded Spellbook: When you reach 2nd level, you can add one spell of your chosen school to your spellbook. The spell can be of any level that you can cast, and it is in addition to the normal spells gained when increasing your level. You can add another spell of your chosen school to your spellbook at 5th and at 8th level.

>I'm salty that the new guy is better than me so I'm going to ruin his campaign

That Guy detected.

Greater Spell Focus: At 3rd level, you gain Greater Spell Focus as a bonus feat. You must apply this feat to your chosen school.

Minor School Esoterica (Ex): The save DCs of your illusion spells that have a saving throw entry of “Will disbelief” increase by 2

Caster Level Increase (Ex): Upon reaching 6th level, add 1 to your caster level whenever you cast a spell of your chosen school. At 9th level, you instead add 2 to your caster leve

Moderate School Esoterica (Ex): At 7th level, your long study of your chosen school leads to a breakthrough. You gain an ability from those below based on your chosen school. Each ability is triggered automatically when you cast a spell from your chosen school and lasts for a number of rounds equal to the spell's level.

Illusion: You gain concealment.

Major School Esoterica (Ex): At 10th level, your knowledge of your chosen school reaches its peak. You gain an ability from those below based on your chosen school; each one can be used three times per day. Illusion: You can cast any illusion spell as a stilled and silent

spell and eschew the materials (per the Still Spell, Silent Spell, and Eschew Materials feats) without an increase in caster level or casting time.

That's a pretty fuckin good build to level 20, but you could just as well play a pure Illusionist using all three of the UA Illusionist Variants, or do the above build without the PrC, so you can gain the benefits of Shadow Shaper to level 20, unless you're headed to Epic Level, in which case you could go for master specialist from 20 and onward for some real power.

Icing on the cake would be the Shade Template, or Lichdom, eat your heart out, shadowcasters. You could take things to a further wild ride with help of a Undead Visage from Libris Mortis (3.5) and 2e's Dead Gods.

Oh wait-
>Shadowcrafter PrC from Forgotten Realms Underdark
>Is a Prestige class that increases the effectiveness of both Shadow Conjuration and Shadow Evocation
>Transversed Arcana already gives you a 10% buff at 1st level to both of these
Shadow Mien (Su): At 1st level, a shadowcrafter gains a +2 bonus on Disguise and Hide checks.

Enhanced Shadow Conjurations (Su): When a shadowcrafter reaches 2nd level, his shadow conjurations automatically intensify in strength by 10%. Hence, shadow conjuration is 30% as strong as the real thing instead of the standard 20%, and greater shadow conjuration is 70% as strong as the real thing instead of the standard 60%. When he reaches 6th level, the strength of his shadow conjurations increases by an additional 10%, for a total increase of 20%. Hence, shadow conjuration is 40% as strong as the real thing, and greater shadow conjuration is 80% as strong.

Enhanced Shadow Evocations (Su): When a shadowcrafter Reaches 3rd level, his shadow evocations intensify in strength by 10%. Hence, shadow evocation is 30% as strong as the real thing instead of the standard 20%, and greater shadow evocation is 70% as strong as the real thing instead of the standard 60%. When he reaches 7th level, the strength of his shadow evocations increases by an additional 10%, for a total increase of 20%. Hence, shadow evocation is 40% as strong as the real thing, and greater shadow evocation is 80% as strong.

So an Illusionist + School Mastery (Illusion) + Illusion Mastery (Ex) + Shadowcrafter PrC

Casts Shadow Conjuration 50% as strong as the real thing, and Greater Shadow Conuration is as 90% as strong.

Casts Shadow Evocation as %50 as strong as the real thing, and Greater Shadow Evocation 90% as strong as the real thing.

Whew.

Immediately compile the works of Arcane Weather and the Black rain and any to all weather effects shown in D&D 3.5 because as a Demilich, you can at will change the weather to these effects over a massive area. You can contact any Evil outsider with the only limitation to this being told by the DM and you can make up to 100 clones of yourself pre-Demilichdom.

Cast Genesis, look up the Book of Vile Darkness rules of souls in crafting, Sacrifice rules, and start a 100-Lich Network (Expanded via Vassaliches) across the planes from your Demiplane, which you increase the size of via a device that casts genesis using the souls of mortals who die in the plane as fuel. As you control the weather in this plane via demilich abilities, have all-powerful divination abilities, and 100 Liches, some across the planes gathering resources to maintain this project, you've literally made yourself a Fucking Demiurge. Trade the souls off for various favors, and profit, or just keep expanding your demiplane until it's a major plane.

To also note, to make a heaven for your demiplane, you need only place a Spirit in that Psionic state which puts a person in a state of bliss via that one Psion spell indeterminately to your benefit.

Want to Destroy the Universe? Get Accerak's Sphere of Annihilation and break it. It's actually a black hole opposed to all other Spheres of Annhilation and will suck the material plane in.

If you run out of ways to canon-age-cheat your way to antedilluvian status, don't worry, there's a quest called quicksilver hourglass that causes this shit to happen anyhow.

Want to a Dangerous CHA whore? 1d4chan did it, but with the Planar Touchstone feat and Calalouges of enlightenment, you can pick the Lust Domain's benefits or that other one that gives you more CHA if nude.

Also, Thrallheard.

>but we never got that far.
I wonder why

A wizard who can only cast spells while holding his breath, anything that lasts more then a round needs you to roll and casting too much can make you pass out.

Mr. Welch's Folly: go through his list.
Each level multi-class into something else.
