It's basically a light saber hulk hand because for some reason they can't make it work on regular sized gauntlets. Power gloves and smaller solarite gauntlets are very rare.
The large power fist can be used to bludgeon enemies, crumple tanks and fortifications, and also peel open armor. It isn't so much a glove as a detached mecha hand.

Imagine you grab a bit of armored vehicle plate on the side of a tank. Your Space Marine hand can crush organs and flesh just fine, but this is a bit too much. So you use a Power Fist, which due to being full of Power, let's you close that hand and literally rip the plate off. Then, you use that same Power Fist to punch into the hole, and the fist being a power weapon exudes powerful shockwaves that absolutely shatter the interior of the tank.
Now you can break vehicles, daemons and super heavy infantry with your fist - your Power Fist.
