Game mechanic. Protag final skill is basically calling his allies to the board. The only restrictions are how much he can summon per battle, the cost and that the allies must not be incapacitated to act.

How about instead of a once per 10 years thing, you make them short duration summons with cooldowns. Call in an ally from a previous jump for 12 hours, but once the summon ends it takes a month before you can do it again. That sort of thing. I really like the idea of being able to call past allies forth, even temporarily.
