>> What's the most 'intense' game you own or play? (I.e. what do you play that you / your fellow players get into the most?)

While I like some of the longer games, my group always seems to get fired up when we play "Dark Moon" with accusations flying left, right, and center about who is 'really' the infected. The other one that gets my group going oddly enough is 'Code Names'. I have one player who just can't seem to give one word only clues.

> > Is it "Stab'em like STEEV" levels of intensity or something mere humans could survive?

So far no stitches. So far...

> > Do you / would you participate in 'board game tournaments'?

I haven't myself, but several friends have played in tournaments for games like Puerto Rico.

>most intense game
That'd prolly be Forbidden Stars but I haven't found a group to play it with

>STEEV levels?
It's not on par with TI3 in terms of STEEV conflict but I'm sure he'd still approve

>tournament
The closest thing I've come to is an LGS hosted an x wing store tournament that I went to, it was actually really enjoyable. But I think that'd be something I would be interested in trying

>most intense?

4 player Inis when everyone is at 1-2 victory conditions is pretty nuts. each season starts taking 30-40 minutes bc of bulk arguing, debating, resolving conflicts ect.

>STEEV

tripfags need death

>tournaments

yes bc anyone going to them is either casual enough to be beaten or good enough to play enjoyably against.
That assumes of course the prize is worth the effort, I'm poor af. so winable boardgames is free-boardgames

could you just not

To be honest - no. It takes almost (*almost*) no effort to make a decent looking thread starter. But look at your image in miniature - like it would appear in the catalog - and it doesn't stand out. The randomly scattered text is all but illegible on the thumbnail image. And the problem with the Anime ones is even worse. Not because they're anime, but because they look like umpteen other thread starters such as the /pfg/ Pathfinder Generals. Which might explain why we've had multiple Anons wander in here in recent threads asking about or posting RPG stuff before realizing they're in the wrong thread.

tl:dr - great idea with crappy execution is still crappy...

>decide to crash instead of staying up to make the new /bgg/
>well at least this time there won't be a load of bitching because of map pimping
>OP uses thumbnail, massive spacing
I'd rather have the map bitching, this is killing my OCD

>great idea with crappy execution
It's like you've only been here a week. More importantly this brings up a greater problem
>there are still people who don't use catalog filters
Disgusting peasants

>I'd rather have the map bitching, this is killing my OCD

Lulz! Because a low-rez image resized to a larger image with random text scatter isn't setting off your "OCD". Right...

> It's like you've only been here a week.

You got me user. It's my first thread evar! (Pic related...)

> I was never a Newbie...

As believable as "I game with Porn Stars who are all in love with 'mah dick' because I'm so amazing." (And other shit that never happened...)

Asked this last thread, but it got lost in the shuffle. Is 40k Conquest worth it? I know it's dead, but I liked the original ccg well enough and the fan community is still doing expacks

Spent the whole afternoon learning and playing Tiny Epic Quest that I just got.

Had a great time. Are all Tiny Epic games this enjoyable? The game is an eurogame disguised as ameritrash.

>Is 40k Conquest worth it?

That depends. If you buy enough to build several decks, will you actually have anyone to play it with you? Any game is only 'worth it' if it brings you enjoyment in some form. For some it's the act of collecting. For others it's actually getting in some games. As for the game mechanics - you can find game play 'How to" videos and review videos on Youtube. I can't say it personally ever grabbed me (and I've been playing 40K since the Rogue Trader 40K stuff back in the 80's). But that doesn't make it a bad game mechanically, a friend of mine plays and likes it. Do your homework is the best first step to making a good choice.

I've played Tiny Epic Kingdoms and I own Tiny Epic Western. I love both.

>reddit spacing

You seem on edge user, maybe cut back on the coffee?

>You seem on edge user, maybe cut back on the coffee?

Next you'll tell me I shouldn't eat a dozen doughnuts and down a 4 pack of Red Bull for breakfast every day...

>Little chocolate donuts give me the energy boost I need
You should be enjoying those with cigarettes not red bull user

youtube.com/watch?v=dYjfjDD5k2U

I spent 120 bucks on this. Would you say the amount of content justifies the price?

Just noticed that's just the very basic core box without stretch goals. The core box with all the stretch goals has more than three times as many minis. 123 minis if I'm not mistaken.

Well, if I'm going to smoke, it's going to be a good cigar. Which means that there will have to be the mandatory Scotch as well. Though I suppose Scotch for breakfast isn't morally wrong, is it?

Were you confused by the OP user, did you think this was a cigar thread?

Man, I just can't stand how Beasts of War just sucks off every single thing that comes through the door. I can understand being excited about products, but it seems to disingenuous and just blatant felation.

I spent the whole afternoon doing this.

Too autistic?

there is still so much weekend left too argh

> What's the most 'intense' game you own or play? (I.e. what do you play that you / your fellow players get into the most?)

Most intense game is definitely Escape : curse of the temple, with the time limit, simultaneous playing and soundtrack. Too intense for some of my friends even. "too stressful" and "I feel exhausted after a game" are things I've heard more than once.

> Is it "Stab'em like STEEV" levels of intensity or something mere humans could survive?

Well, it's a coop, so no stabby.

> Do you / would you participate in 'board game tournaments'?

N.O.P.E.

>card sleeve fags BTFO

> What's the most 'intense' game you own or play?

Everything. I'm pretty fucking intense even about Go-Fish, I can't wait to crush the living breath out of my table the next time Machi Koro comes out. I am intense about Every Single Game.

> Is it "Stab'em like STEEV" levels of intensity or something mere humans could survive?

I can get pretty stabby.

> Do you / would you participate in 'board game tournaments'?

Never. My game group was going to have a thirty six plus bracketed Loopin Louie tourney and nobody could understand why I wouldn't play. Seriously if the only thing keeping me from murdering you over Harbor is the width of the table I seriously don't think a physical game with high stakes is a terribly good idea for anyone.

>board game schadenfreude is best enjoyed with a cigar and single malt while stroking a cat
>value of game is trash on the secondary market unless smoke free/pet free
The only solution is not to play

>>value of game is trash on the secondary market unless smoke free/pet free

Selling a good board game ever - MFW.

>over 30 thread starters
>all the same
>all utterly bland

it's like you mixed motivational posters with impact fonts and left it all in the milk for two days

This is my small collection. What do you guys think? Anything obvious I'm missing? Something that would complement my collection?

> Dislikes because of 'lack of originality'
> Alternatives are largely a pictures of piles of random games
>Or pictures of anime...

Yes, I can see where there was a metric shit-load of 'originality' before. Particularly the anime.

It's more a matter of what you enjoy. You might like a Euro like 'Castles of Burgundy' or 7 Wonders. You also don't have any 'War Games'.

Ya Skrull! ;)

I can still neither confirm nor deny any accusations regarding me being a Skrull.

I like Hive better than both of your abstracts, but the ones you have are still good games.

Its a decent collection. Prob better than mine

Galaxies is the simplest to get out and teach. Yet to play the expansion though. It's one of the better ones.

Kingdoms is a little more complicated, also yet to play the expansion. Lots of replayability with the races to choose from, and the Heros with the expansion, but if you're not quite sold on the game itself, they're not enough to get you on board.

Defenders is co-op, if I recall. I haven't played it, but it's getting a second edition and an expansion soon.

Western is the most complicated and a little tricky to get your head around, but bullet dice and poker hands can almost forgive it. It looks great too.

You've played and enjoyed Tiny Epic Zelda. They're all worth playing, but there will be some clear favourites.

>What's the most 'intense' game you own or play?
Chinatown. We get so into it as far as making really strange deals. Millennium Blades tries to get that way but the time limit makes it hard for us to make deals unless we really know what we're doing. We really love it, but the deal making is just tough with 20 minutes.
>Is it "Stab'em like STEEV" levels of intensity or something mere humans could survive?
We're Minnesotan.
youtube.com/watch?v=vm-MrkoJPC8
>Do you / would you participate in 'board game tournaments'?
I've played Hive in a tourny once. I beat some people but have a long way to go.

will you post it every thread?

Of course.

it's like the language of my people

Straight up throw half of it in the bin and try again.

>Any game is only 'worth it' if it brings you enjoyment in some form
This right here is the heart of all game suggestions. It doesn't matter if everyone else hates a game, if you enjoy it and you have a good time playing it then good for you. It's when people get high and mighty (or autistic, your choice) and start telling everyone else that they're opinion is the only right one does it become a problem

Which half?

>What do you mean gargling shit is wrong, fuck you buddy, I enjoy it so you can go whistle

Went to one of my regular meetups today... I dind't even bother bringing games today, but I got to play some damn good stuff

>Unearth
Fucking amazing dice placement game with some beautiful art
>Burke's Gambit
Social deduction sci-fi game that might be a little too random for some people. Think Bang: The Dice Game, but rethemed to be about alien parasites
>Pitch Car
8 players
2 laps
1 damn good time
>Concordia
Trading in the Mediterranean... in Roman times! Okay, despite my snark, this is actually okay. Not sure I'd play it again, but it'd good to try these things every so often

How is Coup? Someone in my playgroup already has Sheriff of Nottingham, but I wouldnt mind have a filler quality bluff game as opposed to a longer one. So far our only "filler" games are Tsuro, Love Letter, and One Night Werewolf.

It's popular with a lot of people who enjoy light bluffing games. Personally feel like it's not much more than I doubt it/Bullshit, which makes it a poor bang for buck for my group. The expansion supposedly give it some meat though, and you can proxy it with a poker deck pennies, and cheat sheets. Try before you buy is prolly the best idea, even if it's not a pricey game.

>Need to buy small ziplock bags for components
>Know of no store that sells them around
>Can get 100 online for $4
>Shipping is $10
Eternal struggles

I picked up fuck tons of bags at Michaels. Its a big arts and craft store, so I'd try to find one near you, I'd bet there have something.

Michaels/Hobby Lobby/Walmart/etc nowhere near you?

>Doesn't have a dollar store

None of that.
Walmart only sells "food sized" bags of the kind, no small ones.

>bags
>components

here is where you're actually wrong.

Well what do you do?

Bags are perfectly fine as long as they're 4mil thickness, but it really depends on the game what the best storage option is

Did you look in the arts and crafts section? Mind has some small baggies with the stuff for beads.

>Bags are perfectly fine
plastic bags fucking suck

boxes, bins, containers, canisters, trays, dividers, foam and rubber bands

pic related is the best fucking thing ever but I've gone through every one except this slightly stained one which I'd saved from my babies. I've been looking for a decent replacement because a lot of stuff small enough for a box is actually too small for a whole stack of many games' components and approaching moms of newborns about their baby garbage has proven to be creepy.

I'll have to check again, but it just seems to be a regional thing.

>Tapered walls
>Rounded corners
>Giant fucking lip
>Horrid form factor
>Better than plastic bags

>stands on it's own for refilling
>easy to open and close
>consistent size
>perfect for most game boxes
>good surfaces for labeling
>independent structural integrity

it's not my fault if you struggle with shapes

>Consistent size
You mean only one fucking size?
>perfect for most game boxes
Nigga what? That shit wouldn't fit in any box that has a folding board without lifting the lid a god damn inch.
>good surfaces for labeling
Holy shit the autism
>independent structural integrity
Literally every container

I would rather bag everything in sandwich bags than use those monstrosities.

Foamcore inserts laugh at your babyfood snorting handicapped ass.

This, bags are completely valid for a lot of situations, but not all of them. I find mid level games to use them well when they have a generally reasonable amount of bags you need to open for a game relative to it's playtime. Cosmic Encounter for example you want to keep separate all the tokens relating to specific aliens but you'll never need to open all that up at once. Mostly you only need 1 bag per player +1 for the general needed every game cardboard. At an average of like an hour to hour and a half playtime, that works perfectly.

Mistakes in bagging I've had in the past include:
1. Sushi Go Party: For a 15 minute game, you want to keep setup as quick as possible, and for as shitty as that insert is, you don't want to go around de-bagging all the stuff you need for setup.
2. Xia: Legends of a Drift System. I used to tolerate the bags despite just how many of them I needed, until the expansion. Too much in the expansion, so much of it is needed every game, and you need to set them up specifically in like a shop section, a ship section, general tokens, exploration... I'd basically need to set it up every time we were about to play ahead of time.

I know it's the "I have too much disposable income" solution, but for certain games like Xia or 7 Wonders where I just want it to be ridiculously easy to pull out and have everything organized to get strait to playing, those inserts people sell are a god send.

See I don't mind these containers but there's times when a bag is the best option. Recently got Potion Explosion, the insert is fantastic and holds everything except the point tokens, to fit them in a bag is the best answer since it'll lay flatter.

On the other hand something like the tokens in my old copy of SDE? Double sided Plano is vastly superior since it fits under the insert and keeps everything separate without requiring a dozen containers for each status effect token.

Something like Elder Sign where you've got shit loads of cards being played around, a foamcore insert works best, especially with a removable card/token trays. Cards stay with the person who just had their turn and they deal out the rewards, tokens for the guy who's up next, keeps everyone active and speeds up the game.

The only wood insert like these I really have any desire for is Flash Point, but that'd only be after I get all the expansions, and if I'm too lazy to build an insert in the core box and house the boards in the Extreme Danger one. They're gorgeous, especially when stained, but the cost is just too much when I've got free time and a utility knife.

>wouldn't fit in any box that has a folding board
you mean like village?

>Literally every container
thus container > bag

But yeah I'm obviously clueless having used like 50 of them on 70% of my games.

I cannot even begin to justify the cost of it, being they're almost always as much as the game itself, but some of them really do come in handy. I only have 3 games with special inserts like this:
-7 Wonders because I enjoyed using the expansions but didn't like the shelf space all those boxes consumed and liked how fast it made setup being a really light game overall... just fuck those great project cards. They are bigger than any card should ever be and the insert seems to pretend they don't even exist.
-Xia because you really need to organize the shit outta your tokens before you begin to play and this helps in so many ways including being able to keep your ships on stands 100% of the time.
-Terraforming Mars. I know it gets a really luke warm to pure hate response here but I really enjoy it and the playerboards the insert comes with are really nice. Also it was a birthday gift to me from all my friends, so sleeving it and decking it out makes it feel all warm and cozy.

Yeah I could definitely see getting one for Terraforming Mars considering those playerboards. How Stronghold let that shit get through playtesting even after seeing how people bitch about Eclipse and needed trays for that? The entire production on that game is baffling to me, especially when you consider how Buonocore has talked about how he wants to publish games that look and feel good not just play good.

Broken Token (and similar) are completely unjustifiable, but hey gamers don't really like games. We like storage and those wood inserts are some of the prettier storage options out there.

>Pitch Car
I really want that game

Thoughts on 7 Wonders: Duel?

> What's the most 'intense' game you own or play? (I.e. what do you play that you / your fellow players get into the most?)
Any strategy game where it's not decided too early gets any member of my play group sweating. Inis and Twilight Struggle in particular.
>> Is it "Stab'em like STEEV" levels of intensity or something mere humans could survive?
We only really get angry playing Avalon, and understandably so.
>> Do you / would you participate in 'board game tournaments'?
I'd gladly do so if I had a chance to compete at any of the games I enjoy.

Good for 2 players.

One of my top choices in 2 player games. It's a lot about controlling who flips which card and it's varied enough you really cannot use the same strategy in two games (one game bogart all resources, next game it's wind up with a ton of gold cards for coins). I've never been able to even approach pulling off a science victory, but then again I have always failed trying to force a military victory instead of letting the game take me that way so perhaps I've just never gotten the right deal to make it easy.

You discard 3 out of each deck to keep it a little interesting, and the green coins that come out give you some different avenues. I do wish it had a little more- I mean I find the games plenty varied and I'm not bored at all but I'd rather have like 1/3 to 1/2 the deck out each game (i.e. a bigger more varied deck to start with)- it's interesting, I want radically different. However it would probably screw up what is a pretty balanced game and I'm just babbling.

The cards are really too too small though.

I'm also a big 7 wonders fan, I've probably taught the bigger game more than any other one in my collection so I also like that Duel is a good two player with the same themes.

You need to buy some shelves/10.

Is there any reason to keep old games? I moved 30+ games to the basement today and realized as I stacked them in a corner that I never wanted to see most of them again much less play any of them. I mean I cannot imagine busting out backgammon for any reason other than to teach my kids, but honestly I'd rather play onitama or anything modern and do they really need to know backgammon?

The other thing I realized is a desperate fumbling for years trying to find "something better" to play is pretty evident. Basically i just wound up with more garbage uno tier card games.

Seriously is there any point to keeping any traditional games? Is there some benefit to making the kids learn monopoly when we could be playing for sale? Is chess even a must learn game anymore?

>keeping old games
If you know you won't/don't want to play them, and they're not awful shit? Donate them to a school/library/hospital/etc or sell/math trade them and get something you want. If it's just Candyland/Monopoly/Trouble toss it in the trash, the world has too many copies of those already.

>any point to "traditional games"
Some are useful, anons in the last thread mentioned Cribbage, which is good at helping kids learn to do math in their head. Could you get the same from modern games? Sure, but it's not hard to keep a deck of cards on hand and then you've got a dozen other games that are enjoyable.

>chess as a must
No. Chess is fine if you want to be part of that subculture, where you learn optimal moves and classic games. It does teach critical thinking, but a lot of that is based around what's already been done before (not surprising the game is really fucking old). You can teach strategy and tactics just the same with modern games, and if they're more engaging all the better because you'll play them more than that chess set in the corner you ignore to watch another movie on netflix.

>The only wood insert like these I really have any desire for is Flash Point
I'm super tempted to get that too, but waiting to hear how it fits the new expansion. I'm also hoping it's going to actually be possible to buy the new expansion.

I wouldn't worry about it IB&C is run by an idiot, but he's an idiot that wants to make money. The only production issues they've had in the last few years was the issue regarding One Night Revolution having to be name changed, and pissing off a few backers and The Resistance's designer. Flash Point once he realized the demand he started doing larger print runs so they weren't limited to KS backers and could distribute.

> Seriously is there any point to keeping any traditional games? Is chess even a must learn game anymore?
The only worthwhile traditional game is chess. It's still the ultimate thinking family game. Nothing modern comes close. (Modern family games are usually about luck-based gambling, which is not what you really want to encourage your kid to play.)

Forbidden stars or twilight imperium 4? Which would you buy, which would you rather play?

Both, because they are different games with different focuses.

Kingdoms is boring euro/area controll. Kinda neat as a gateway and meeples are cute, but game is trashy.
Quest is pure garbo, nuff said.
Galaxies is easy and fun, but then you realize, that every single session s the same, culture is broken, and there are almost 0 interaction. Expansion dont fix that, just more stff, that sounds cool, but works shitty.
Wester is more "complex" of the bunch, but after a few plays with friends kinda feels samey.

>Quest is pure garbo

Citation needed

Which one would you rather recommend, The Duke or Onitama?

quick /bbg/, any experience with Eldritch Horror?
played many times at Arkham Horror and very enjoy that game

slightly different theme, great improvement in mechanics and streamlining.

Concordia is the best game ever

> Concordia is the best game ever
Why?

If you can only have one worker placement game for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Agricola, of course.

Personally, I really like 'Stone Age'.

I like your idea. I use small zip-lock bags a lot, but I also use Plano trays to sort shiz when possible.

Agreed - there are some situations where bags are still more cumbersome than using a small storage solution of some sort.

> "I have too much disposable income" solution

Yes, you're having 'bad wrong fun' with your money. (Me too.)

>How Stronghold let that shit get through playtesting even after seeing how people bitch about Eclipse and needed trays for that?

I'm not sure why more game designers aren't implementing better player board designs considering the idea is out in general circulation. Cost is about the only factor I can think of, and I'm not certain that it's really the main reason more companies don't do it...

I cannot recommend anything but a foamcore insert for Eclipse and games like it (this one I made off plans I found online has slots for cube trays which I intend on buying/making soon) There's just too many bits to use bags or buckets.

$10 worth of foamcore, a boxcutter, and a little time beats anything else.

what are your recommendations for 3-player games?
Can be coop/vs/ whatever, up to complicated difficutly. Fantasy or scifi themed

While I have all the expansions - I haven't put them all in one box. (And they keep coming out with new Hexes setting off my OCD - Obsessive Collector Disorder. ;) Any idea where you ran across those plans?

(And I'd still be putting the rounds and cubes in bags inside the boxes because otherwise they'll get spilled - I know my friends.)

Archipelago (Medium to high complexity)
Arctic Scavengers (Deck Builder)
Carcassone (Tile placement)
Citadels
Conquest of Planet Earth (play as invading aliens in a 1950's style sci-fi movie)
Core Worlds (an excellent deck builder / Empire building game)
Cutthroat Caverns (semi-cooperative)
Dead of Winter (semi-cooperative)
Dixit (lightweight game rules wise, but fun.)
D&D - Wrath of Ashardalon (Co-op)
Exodus (Space 4x game - Edge of Extinction expansion recommended)
Fairy Tale (simple & fast deck builder)
Five Tribes
Forbidden Desert (co-op)
Forbidden Stars (area-control / dudes on a map)
Hit Z Road
Kemet (fantasy area-control / dudes on a map)
Mare Nostrum: Empires (area-control / dudes on a map)
Mission: Red Planet (area-control / dudes on a map)
Nations (Empire building)
Neuroshima Hex (lightweight war game)
Ogre (lightweight war game)
Pandemic (co-op)
Puerto Rico (Engine builder / Euro game)
Quartermaster General (Campaign level war game)
Robinson Crusoe (Co-op - can be very challenging)
Roll for the Galaxy (dice based tableau builder / engine builder)
Small World (fantasy area-control / dudes on a map)
Specter Ops (hide -n- seek the board game, and yes, it's fun.)
Splendor (card drafting / set collection)
Stone Age (engine building / points collection)
Terra Mystica (engine building / euro game)
The Castles of Burgundy (set collection)
The Grizzled (Co-op / Press your luck)

thank you!

Dominant Species, hands down.

This is the one I used:
boardgamegeek.com/filepage/133616/box-insert-plan-store-core-game-and-all-expansions

Make a note that the cube tray and player trays use posterboard or something similar for the bottom, this is what saves on height so the lid isn't lifted.

Additionally I would only really recommend this specific design if you plan on getting/making cube trays. If you don't then you might be better off with a different design.

Anachrony

Best way to store Arkham Horror: LCG in the box? For being as prolific as they are FFG really blows ass at inserts

I'm gonna buy Charterstone at Essen this year and continuisly jack off to it
I'll still keep Tzolkin and Euphoria

You're welcome.

Thank you! (And points about construction noted. There's a heavy but think material used for matting pictures that would work without being to thick.)

Inis
