Use a commlink pseudo-deck at chargen (around 20k nuyen). Hint to the DM that you want to upgrade to a proper deck ASAP, but you couldn't afford one and not gimp yourself.
As long as your GM isn't a complete shitheel he will silently thank you, because you just gave him material for several runs with the plot of your decker either getting enough cash to buy one, or stealing one off the back of a truck.

CGL is a shit company that releases mediocre products, case in point their 5th edition Shadowrun books are so poorly edited than half of them don't even have a worthwhile table of contents.

Also their senior staff were involved in massive fraud, stealing money from freelance writers and embezzled to fund home renevations. They then launched a disinformation campaign to hide the truth, and anyone that helped them had their characters written into Shadowrun canon.

On a side note, I just realised that I have over 1,800 non-cheese Shadowrun-themed character imagessaved on my computer. I think I need to stop.

Alright, it seems Decker-Rigger is just too expensive an all accounts, from nuyen to skills. I guess I'll go with Prime Runner decker, go all in at chargen for it, and spend future karma/nuyen to become an all-around skill-monkey.

That is a very good question. Ware and Deck prices are enormous, big enough that many GMs either don't give you access to the Spider's Deck or make it self-destruct, simply due to the fact that 10% of an average deck is more than most runs pay.

The point of decks being so pricey is that they technically allow you to access the Matrix undeterred and to be a threat to megas. If they were super accessible the entire thing would be pointless.

What does that even mean

Clearly allowing people to interact with a major part of the setting is something that shouldn't be allowed unless they spend a staggering amount of money on it.

What I mean to say is that cyberdecks are a rare and specialized commodity. The Restricted rating means that to have one you need a license as a security spider or as a security contractor for the matrix.

A cyberdeck is not something kids buy (forget devgrl) for the hell of it. It's a very specialized micro computer capable of running top of the line programs. People who use cyberdecks either work for megas as spiders, high-end programmers (and even then) or as matrix technicians.

To make a comparison more apt, a cyberdeck isn't a home computer. Commlinks are smartphones and computers put in one, cyberdecks are hyper-specialized piece of hardware.

So the price is explained in it's definition, it's a specialist tool for accessing the backdoor of the matrix.

Is that actually a common houserule? I might be able to sell my GM on it, but I don't want it to cause problems with other prices later (like commlinks). Either way, let's say my decker had to burn down his hidey-hole and he's having to work his way up. What's the best way to hack on the cheap that won't get my crew killed? Are modified speciality decks a good idea?

The price is explained by the abilities the deck gives you.

Having both attack and sleaze is unique and would require a special system for it to be possible. Just by raw an attack dongle at rating 6 is over 100k. Now you can have one dongle at a time on a commlink but if you could have two it'd be 200k+ minimum and you'd still have no program slot.

Say a program slot is 50k per slot. A rating 4 deck has approx 200k worth of program slots, plus an attack and sleaze capable board of minimum 200k. And those are all approximate numbers.

Also maybe the price is that high because it's a seller's market and the corps don't want every script kiddie to be able to steal paydata or fuck with their hosts.

A) Them not focusing on the run and instead on the Spider
or
B) Trying to take the deck but being denied (e.g. Self-Destructing Deck)
or
C) The GM having to jack up Run Rewards to give them a reason not to focus on the Spider (and even then they will likely want to steal it for additional money)

It also leads to them being pissed when they have to change ownership of the deck they stole and contend with the clusterfuck that is ownership rules.

The main problem with what you're proposing is that the decker is on site.

Security spiders are never on site, they're always at the nearest corporate arcology or enclave and under security.

It's been in the lore that way for a long time. Same reason Security mages are also never on site.

Why not just have fixers or johnsons lend or rent out a good cyberdeck for the duration of the run? you can still have a decent cyberdeck for most operations and save up for your own personal deck

5e's provided information on Spain, Metropole, and the Carribbean League (especially Havana). There's also a lot of good new stuff for Cheyenne and Hong Kong, and some bad new stuff for Denver and Boston. Aside from that, they've provided fuckall new location information.

Not really. It does if you increase the attack/stealth dongle, but with Smoke and Mirrors running it'll be high anyway. After all, it's only temporary until you find a 'real' deck.

Same situation, PCs are a street sam, face, rigger, and infiltrator. Fixer sent them on a datasteal and gave them two single-use comlinks. First one would fuck with security at the lab, with better effects the closer they installed it to the network security room. Second one would pull the data they need if plugged in to the correct terminal. They left the first comlink plugged into the network when they left and got the fixer's apartment blown up.

I mean, the name change would make sense if the greeks took advantage of the seccesion to go full Megali, but they didn't, so *shrug*

I got a street sam with a control rig & a Roadmaster, an infiltrator & a DMNPC facemage because they both made goddamn murderbots & will die without magic back up & someone to charm/negotiate.
