>Why aren't there more of them?
Because gag a day or two gamers on a couch style webcomics are infinitely easier (no need for an overarching plot, can get away with stick figures or drawing everyone from the same angle every time) to make and more popular. See SMBC, XKCD, Cyanide and Happiness, Penny Arcade, Ctrl+Alt+Del, etc.

Don't grells have lots of psionic abilities

What's the comic in OP?

elf-comic.thecomicseries.com/comics/85/
yeah fuck that

Danke very mucho

Yeah basically this. It's one of the big reasons I hate those comics. Though to be honest I don't blame them for taking the easy way out, it's probably better than making a big sprawling fantasy comic that'll peter out within the year.

I think there are more comics about fantasy rpgs (fantasy worlds where they play with D&D like rules) than actual fantasy comics.

>Why aren't there more of them?
Nigga, you what?
There are literally so many of them that I stumble upon them on sadpanda of all places.
And, I mean, like actually genuinely good webcomics like Blade under Mask, Scurry etc. and just earlier this week there was a thread about Stand Still, Stay Silent.
There are a bunch of great fantasy webcomics out there. You just aren't looking hard enough.

You can't pay hosting fees in Doritos.

There's quite a few honestly. Digger, KSBD, Aikonia, Unsounded, Guilded Age, Alfie, I Roved Out, The Meek, Everblue, Ava's Demon, Drowtales, etc. You really don't know how to look.

You inserted some straight up shit and garbage in that list.

which ones?

The ones that user doesn't like, obviously

Drowtales is straight up shit. Don't lie.

>some straight up shit and garbage
>lists one thing

Begone, /v/ermin

>Don't grells have lots of psionic abilities

The standard Grell animal (and not the person) doesn't actually have any psionic abilities beyond the ones that keep it alive by allowing it to float and I think read minds?
Their only means of defense is the venomous stingers on the end of their tentacles.

Nah, their thing is alchemy and magic items.

Adding to the list, Out of Placers and Daughter of the Lilies.

Though if you can't stand christfaggotry, you should probably skip out on DotL.

OP never said anything about good
I never read it during the infamous first years. What I did read some years back honestly wasn't all that bad. I think Veeky Forums just has an everlasting hateboner for it and never gave it a second chance.

I think the more important question is: "Why do they all suck?"

Because most of everything sucks

Because they know that Gunnerkrigg Court would beat the piss out of them.

Wait... how does XKCD make that list?

Muh nugga

THEY ALL TRY TO BE CUTESY AND CARTOONISH

WHAT'S MISSING IS GRITTINESS

Half that list is shit.

Not that guy, but he's saying because the XKCD author can get plenty of money and attention by drawing newspaper-strip-style stick figure comics, he has no motive to put work into a fantasy comic with an overarching plot which takes much more effort.

elf has grit!

On any given day on co, you can find a thread discussing a fantasy webcomic. (Gunkerig, unsounded, and paranatural all get generals. Eerie cuties/magik chicks used to dominate the giz general until they died for zii's sins). tg runs an oots general. Drowtales, inexplicably, keeps ticking along even after the story reached a logical endpoint, and girl genius won like three Hugo awards. What more do you want?

Have you considered the one about the cursed undead and the generic freak?

The semi-official porn is pretty good tho

not being webcomics

what is this ?

>avas demon
>drowtales
>unsounded

Ava's and Unsounded are both decent comics and set in fantasy settings, so I don't know why you're arrowing them.

Property of Hate is pretty good if you can stand the page per week update schedule.

and if you can withstand lolsorandom ultra-quirky character designs for emo kids that look like they escaped from Undertale, apparently

I couldnt read unsounded because the girl is so fucking annyoing its unbearable

I dislike Ava's characters in general
While it started off great i couldnt bear how they were acting.

Well most of the characters are unfinished ideas trying to piece themselves together, so that's not really incongruent with the setting.

Seems to me that the setting is designed specifically to allow ultra-quirky character designs for emo kids to exist within it. Not the other way around.

Unsounded.

It's a massive plot point of the story is that the characters exist as concepts. The main character is still trying to wrap her head around the fact that she no longer actually exists as a person. I mean, you're probably not totally wrong; some if this is probably to let the artist get away with quirky character designs but it's not like its some big unjustified thing when doubts, fears, and ideas are all creature types that exist out in the world.

>Why aren't there more of them?
Not lucrative enough to sustain the author, unless they move to published/contracted work or porn.

>or porn.
Indeed

>Alfie
>I Roved Out
still a blue board, underageanon

That's kind of the same thing as saying someone who enjoys making bread for a living is a terrible person for not being a sushi chef. XKCD is what the author set outfit it to be, so why in the actual hell is it being brought up in relation to fantasy webcomics when it's never, ever showed aspirations of being one?

Good thing he just named them instead of posting porn then isn't it?

>calling others underaged

Grell "alchemy" and magic items are actually sort of "science" or "technology" from their home dimension but only some of it carries over to work in our reality

I think he was just generally trying to say that it has objectively shit and lazy art. Munroe is actually a very competent artist, as demonstrated every time he gives a shit about that week's panel, but 99% of the strips are stick figures talking.
You really couldn't get away with that in a high fantasy webcomic, so the fact that one format does allow shitty stick figures and another doesn't might have contributed to him choosing to go with gag-a day science jokes. The only two webcomics that I follow that I consider "fantasy" are K6BD and SSSS, and they both have fantastic art direction.

>You really couldn't get away with that in a high fantasy webcomic

Well, I don't know then. I guess user just doesn't like XKCD and brings it up whenever relevant, because they don't like something popular.

>brainsquid
love the idea

K6BD is nothing but exposition, good design but shit writing

I really want to make an intense plot heavy fantasy webcomic some day but I just don't have the willpower to learn how to draw properly. So all I do all day is imagine how it would be and work on the story and setting.

Puns
I know, it's shit. It's very much shit. But I can't help but like it anyway

Somebody post some S A D

K6BD, for one

There's loads, it's just that most of them are horseshit.

Good fantasy webcomics include: Unsounded, The Meek, KSBD, Elf, SSSS.

Likewise. At this point I honestly think I'm just going to start doing it in the near future with shit art and try to improve as I go along. Plenty of stuff that starts off with shit art or sprites or whatever gets a decent following, I might luck out.

Fite me nerd. What's not to like about K6BD?

This whole part was depressing as hell.
>Guy is legitimately friends with an elf and wombat
>Get lost during a fey party
>While drunk and wander outside the feylands, gets framed for murder
>Get tortured repeatedly for a crime he didn't commit
>At his trial, a dryad truthfully testifies that it wasn't him, but the cousin of the local noble who committed the murder
>Guy still gets executed because none of the townsfolk are stupid enough to hang the cousin of a noble for any crime they could commit

...

Find an artist and be the writer. Doesn't need to be a one man job.

The characters are actively unlikeable, the action is poorly drawn, and the story is bland. It has nice backdrops, sure, but so do the Star Wars prequels

>Unsounded

By far the best fantasy comic around, maybe the best webcomic. Better than most print comics, actually. You have awful taste.

>Better than most print comics, actually.
Capeshit, maybe, but Unsounded is ass. People just like it for the undead memes and the loli.

We have a winner.

Yeah someone might see the word alfie and get offended.

I mean, I'm offended someone actually thinks Alfie is good for either the story or the porn, so you're not wrong.

>god tier worldbuilding
>excellent art
>flawed, interesting characters
>persistent themes
>realistic, clever dialogue
>great pacing
>consistent, believable character arcs
>fresh approach to high fantasy

Nah, it's fucking great. Your taste is just wonky.

It's also one of the few webcomics that actually takes advantage of the medium in a way that is effective when establishing atmosphere and tone.

>>god tier worldbuilding
It's just basic bitch gnosticism
>>excellent art
It's sloppy as fuck, and looks terrible when he tries to convey motion.
>>flawed, interesting characters
Only if by flawed you mean incomplete
>>persistent themes
Not particularly.
>>realistic, clever dialogue
Right. Like
>>great pacing
Pfft
>>consistent, believable character arcs
You mean one arc, over and over.
>>fresh approach to high fantasy
Again, it's just basic bitch gnosticism. Kirkbride lite, if you will.

Your post reads like a bad sales pitch, btw

>It's just basic bitch gnosticism

Looks like somebody either doesn't understand gnosticism or hasn't read the comics. It's also sort of puzzling how you'd associate gnosticism with things like the comic's sociopolitical geography.

>It's sloppy as fuck

Wew, it's almost impossible to be this much of a liar.

>Only if by flawed you mean incomplete

So you haven't read the comic?

>Not particularly.

So you haven't read the comic?

>Pfft

So you haven't read the comic?

>You mean one arc, over and over.

So you haven't read the comic?

>Again, it's just basic bitch gnosticism.

Pic related.

You tell him, sweetie. Abbadon is genius!

>gnosticism

Gnosticism is pretty specific and there's nothing really like it in Unsounded.

I think you may have misunderstood Gnosticism or conflated it with something else. Maybe you think there is a slight Kabbalist connection, and are getting the words mixed up? I could sort of see that in the way different states of consciousness are explored, though that probably more resembles Buddhism than anything else, what with the aspect of reincarnation and of the khert stripping away memories to purify the soul in preparation for its next life. Even then, that's a much more 'neutral' system than Buddhism, where you can be reincarnated into a hell state or a lower/higher being depending on your deeds in life.

>Abaddon

...You're thinking of K6BD. Unsounded isn't K6BD.

Looks like someone misfired their shitpost

Out of Placers is also blatant fetish bait, though.

>It's sloppy as fuck, and looks terrible when he tries to convey motion.
>he
Ashley's a she though I do agree the action scenes aren't well conveyed

The dingus is talking about K6BD. I actually have to agree with him that it's sloppy, but oddly enough I think it works for the comic. If the comic were supposed to be more grounded, it would actively annoy me, but IMHO it actually enhances the setting's surreal quality and hellish locations.

you fuckers drive me up a fucking wall. You only get better at art by doing more art. You don't even have to present your garbage scribbles to the world. Just fucking practice.

What? No, nigger. He's talking about Unsounded. Look at the fucking post chain.

Eh I'm just bitching because I want the benefits of having decent art even though I don't actually like the act of drawing. It might also partially be sunk cost fallacy. I fucking love worldbuilding in the way that nothing can keep me from doing it, but that comes with the problem is that the output from it is abysmal because I don't have the passion for hobbies that could turn that worldbuilding into something impressive. I'm not complaining about not being good at art; I just don't want to do art. If I could beam my thoughts onto the page then I'd be golden.
The reason I made that post was try to goad myself into it. I want to want to do it, but I just don't.

He referenced Abaddon (the author of K6BD) in response to someone disagreeing with him. The guy he replied to was talking about Unsounded, but the complainer was definitely whining about K6BD.

>You only get better at art by doing more art
Which I literally said I'd do, captain autism.

Rice Boy anyone?

>shit writing
How and in what ways? There's plenty of ways writing can be bad, and I'm curious as to how K6BD's is.

Shit was upsetting. Well made comic.

Speaking as someone who also aspires to make a fantasy webcomic, I can say that it's way more satisfying to have drawn than to draw. When you hone your skill and see what you've made, you'll feel accomplished. Keep practicing if you're not gonna partner with an illustrator.

So I picked up DotL and honestly so far it's less obnoxiously Christian than Narnia. Like, there's one reference to the Trinity and I some bits of rather Christian attitude towards love (like loving and being loved and whatnot can defeat evil somehow?), but so far as I could tell there's no Jesus or whatnot. Am I missing something?

>What's missing from fantasy webcomics?
MonsterSex

Try Oglaf and Alfie

Main character is very likely be the setting's equivalent to an angel.

Got that, but that element doesn't seem particularly Christian to me. I was writing in response to the comment about Christfaggotry. But maybe I interpereted that wrong, as meaning annoying overbearing Christianity rather than just fantasy obviously written by a Christian (like the difference between Narnia and Middle-Earth)

Yeah, I actually stopped reading it for that reason. I felt like the most interesting arc had ended.

>he doesn't like Incase's art
Nigga, you what?
I mean, yeah, his taste in fetishes is questionable, but his artstyle is pretty good.
>"b-but muh sameface!"
Literally the bane of multiple popular porn artists.
I mean, neither ShindoL, nor Ban, nor Mizuryu Kei, nor Ganmare etc. etc. can draw different faces for shit despite being excellent porn artists, because that's the distinctive artstyle they are used to drawing.

I can count the artists that both draw consistently good porn AND are capable of drawing a variety of faces and bodytypes on a single hand, and trust me when I say that, because picrelated.

She mentioned the story was going to have strong Christian themes in one of the blog things below one of the pages once, so maybe it'll get stronger.

Then again, one of the main characters is also flagrantly gay and it's not a big deal in the story so maybe she's just covering her bases.

Incase's sameface issue has been getting a lot better in recent years.

He only draws one bodytype too - femmy bitchboi. Occasionally he adds fat or tits, but it's all still the same body with the same face.
