Hot-blooded but kind and well-intentioned warrior eager to get out there and help people.

try to do the right thing, get dicked at every corner

Depends, I usually sit down with the GM beforehand and establish what the code is for the God and order my Paladin is going to be a part of. That way he, and the other players get an idea of what lines I wont cross as a Paladin, and I dont get the arbitrary dicking for doing something the GM doesn't like (one former GM had my Paladin fall because he decided my Paladin was Vegan and I ordered pork sausages with my ale at an Inn). Most retardation concerning Paladins involves either the player, the GM or both not understanding the Paladin or the codes in which they must operate and poor conception. Sit down, nut out a Code of Conduct for the Paladin and their God, and communicate with other Players outside of the game as to how this will apply in game to increase roleplaying and decrease in party conflict.

The rest. How you play your Paladin Mechanically and personality (Bubbly & Naive, Reserved & Pious, Grizzled & Jaded, Holy Crusader) is entirely up to you.

I also suggest doing the above with Chaotic Neutral and Evil Characters, work out how to fit it in with the others before moving forward.

different every time usually.

One was a reformed criminal, a tired older man who was very very good at killing, soft spoken, cynical but wanted to be optimistic. He looked after the priests of the god of mercy like his naive, happy, stupid kids. He took on the burden of fucking mercing what needed to get merc'd

Another was a hot blooded CHIVALRY! fanatic who was super amped about JUSTICE

Another was a warrior philosopher, who meditated on difficult questions, and found the path of being a paladin to be the best and most ethical path for them to follow

Another was a racist, misogynist asshole who thought a womans place was being the protected feminine ideal, that anything with differently textured skin was inferior and most likely evil by nature, that certain people were just born better and were meant to lead. He also practiced charity, noblesse oblige, was polite if not respectful to everyone, and upheld law and the tenants of justice tempered with mercy

I like this, but especially 1 and 3. Different from the usual stuff people do with Paladins.

they seem very ronin somehow

1 was a Paladin of Ilmater, the FR god of mercy and healing. His background was a little bit turbo edge - he was a violent criminal from the streets of Luskan who broke one of the very important unwritten rules of said streets, he fucked with the clergy of Ilmater. Literally, he raped a young neophyte, so he was cursed by Ilmater and fell ill. His body wasting away, dying painfully, his friends abandoned him to the gutter. The Church of Ilmater saved his life, because out of desperation he crawled to them in need, and being nursed back to health by them forced him to confront his world views and his actions. Because Ilmater is a god of mercy and forgiveness, this was eventually... accepted, to a degree, though he was encouraged to go serve Ilmater elsewhere for the sake of those he'd hurt in Luskan. Eventually he became a Paladin.

In combat he wielded whatever weapon killed the swiftest and cleanest, usually a great sword, and he would never strike to wound - once it came to combat he saw his duty as minimizing pain and suffering, which he did by killing his enemies as quickly as fucking possible.

you just posted it, m8

What are some fun codes or restrictions you have come up with?

Gotta stay honorable

PS: in my defense for the edge, I was a teenager

3. Was a paladin of Siamorphe who I basically played as a knight of Brettonia. He believed that the value of a race was analogue by how human/humanoid it was. Elves and Humans were more or less equal, halflings and dwarves and gnomes somewhat less so (ruled by their vices rather than virtue). Orcs, goblins, etc were lower on the totem pole and irredeemably evil (half orcs were somewhat tolerable due to their human blood redeeming them but forever cursed to be boorish and idiotic)

Women were meant to be the feminine ideal, they ought to bring peace and inspire men to greatness. A woman 'acting out' by trying to rule aggressively as a man, or be a warrior, was being over-ridden by her emotion (something women were unfortunately prone to do), and most often needed a good stern disciplining and a man to take charge. It was as much a mans fault as the woman's when they acted out, because it meant the men in their lives had not behaved responsibly or properly, and had not provided for them sufficiently. So he was more... patronizing, than anything else

This made his interactions with the Barbariazon pretty hilarious, but due to rolls they always sort of came to a draw when they (frequently) came to blows.

My DM is a smart man, so he never does the whole fall thing unless paladin completely loses his faith and doesn't even try to atone for his fuckups. As long as he tries to make things right, he never falls. For the record, detect evil also only detects demons/undead/places of great emotional suffering etc. But I think those are its default settings for PF anyway..

My last, and incidentally the first paladin I ever played in a PF game, was basically the Hand of the King, and a representative of the Order (which is independent, but is called when supernatural shit gets real) in the kingdom. He served both as a dispenser of King's Justice (lawful aspect), and Divine Law (good aspect, mostly banishing demons etc.), so he had the authority to judge and sometimes execute criminals on the spot Ned Stark-style, and never had any issue with killing brigands when they refused to surrender (attacking a fantasy policeman = death sentence). The setting was also lower magic than usual, so demons and undead were a major threat

Campaign started as a paranormal investigation and was put on hiatus when we discovered a major plot that involved a kingdom using black ops demon summoners to assassinate a heir to the throne of another kingdom. Was fun while it lasted. The party actually included a TN assassin (actually something like knife master/scout rogue with 1 level of shadowdancer for hide in plain sight, but I don't know PF that well, so I might be mistaken), who was made alignment-compatible by the means of adding a Morag Tong of sorts, the guild of honorabru contracted killers, to the setting. Paladin didn't like him, but there were no major party conflicts. Which only reinforced my view that good DMing and clever roleplay > any mechanical system restrictions, especially fucking alignment.

Legitimately good guy who tries to help people where he can, but brings down the hammer when confronted with Evil. He's willing to give people the benefit of the doubt, if they haven't proven themselves not worth it already, but when push comes to shove out comes the sword.

Dwarven Paladin, where the Dwarven Gods didn't care if he slew surrendered or defenseless evil creatures (Orcs, Giants, etc). However the code required the Dwarf to donate atleast 84 hours of his own time and resources to using his craftmanship to fix armour, or weapons, or tools, or buildings. If he was in a town it's for the peasants and or city, if it was in the army it was maintenance of gear for the soldiers and .fortifications. Not doing so (barring being to injured or ill) would result in a cut off from abilities until time was made up. Also he had to create and donate a weapon, piece of Armor or jewelry (preferably mastercrafted & magic) to donate to the Chuch for the Priesthood and other Paladins. No thieving, no destruction of art and artifice, no killing of innocent good races (according to the Dwarven god), No dishonesty to church or friends and can only lie if it is to protect and must ask permission from Dwarven Gods to do so (consent granted by Gods). Show no mercy to your enemies and expect none in return (dont surrender or ask to be spared if captured, dont be a compliant prisoner) And of course the obligatory change of alignment. It made for a great character.

the other I played was a Paladin of Ilmater (the one that fell due to DM deciding all Ilmater worshippers were vegan without discussing or even telling anyone of this) he was more general, be kind and just, with a sort of Knights Hospitalier thing going on. DM made him fall over eating a pork sausage which resulted in us scrapping the game and kicking out the GM (who had previously been a player, and a tolerable but obnoxious one at that) from the group. He was just bearable as a player but as GM he became a total fucking bell-end.

>fell over a pork sausage

Haram

Pork sausage tastes delicious, and one bite is enough to understand that only a just and kind god would've created it, and only the utter spawns of darkness would deny it. That DM was secretly a devil worshiper.

>the one that fell due to DM deciding all Ilmater worshippers were vegan without discussing or even telling anyone of this
what the fuck, why would he do that

My favorite kind of paladin to play is the overly optimistic nieve boy scout with a hero complex. This is more of an challenge to the Dm though, I want to be broken by the cold realities of the world. Been playing enough to avoid being an obnoxious twat about it though.

This

Tennants**

I don't.
They're holier than thou fuckwits who should stay in their monasteries fucking their little boy converts.

low-energy, user

What's that? I think I just heard some heretical faggot who need to get his ass "converted".

I'm not going to type out my full novella length disdain for those cunts user.
Sorry, I couldn't hear you with that little boy's cock in your mouth.

>I'm not going to type out my full novella length disdain for those cunts user.
this is Veeky Forums, novellas are obligatory

Why would he suck a little boys cock? The little boy would be sucking his cock. Sucking little boy cock is what the nuns do.

Geese your dumb

>Nuns are really Succubi in disguise

*tips fedora*

Stop before this turns into another "Turns u into assfat" religion tread

The best way to play a Paladin is as a completely non self-aware anime protagonist. Prove me wrong.

I'm actually Orthodox

>

succubi assfat is not fun, user

He was a player who'd been bragging about how good a DM, he was annoying, but tolerable as a player. The group decided to let him run a Sword Coast campaign, and he became a fucking nightmare. He had our Rashemi Sorceress take bleeding damage everytime she cast a spell as he had her attacked by "Vengeful Spirits" because the player wrote a background where she was exiled for the youthful mistake of going of with a boy when she was supposed to be watching a cairn which subsequently got grave robbed (thats how he dealt with the background). He had the city guard shave the Dwarven Rogue's beard off as punshment for not disclosing information on a smuggling operation the Dwarf was suspected of being a part of. The Half-Orc Barbarian kept getting pickpocketed by xenophobic Halflings and our Drow Cleric of Eilistraee was kicked out of her church and denied spells as she refused to strip off naked and demonstrate the sword dance to a bunch of querying and curious Sun Elves from Evermeet.

Needless to say it only lasted one game, and we kicked him out of the group over it. He went from being a tolerable yet annoying dick player to a full on douche cannon with a fetish for humiliating and fucking over characters. Even tried to defend his DMing decisions on that his style was "hard mode" and that if we were decent players we wouldn't have had as much trouble or as hard a time with the game. It was a complete fucking switch from slightly annoying fat nerd to full on sociopath. We've heard from a couple of other groups who've taken him in (and ditched him since) that this is pretty much par for the course, all right to fill a spot in the party if you're desperate for that one extra with a few cringey jokes that becomes a fucking demon child of Hitler, Stalin and Big Red the second you let him DM.

He's one of the min reasons why now when I play or DM I communicate with everybody to make sure everythings inline and understood before we game.

A pompous buffoon with a heart of gold. Courageous and forgiving. Easy to circumvent by the morally-dubious members of the party, but potentially cannier than he lets on to judge by the occasional implications in his commentary.

Like this.

The Finale of the Paragon Paladins

So what excuse have you got to explain the edge of this character? Were you a teenager then, too?

Exactly, any God or religion that denies me my right to a big fat Pork sausage served with mash potato, gravy and warm sauerkraut with bacon & fennel is one that is evil and should never be trusted.

How does Veeky Forums play an antipaladin?

Pretty much this, pound for pound.

like a (reasonable) cop

...

...

Dopey, handsome, enthusiastic, optimistic dogooder with AC and hp sufficient to tank an entire encounter while the rest of the party decides whether this is in their contract or not.

Oblivious, good looking, and noble enough to make maidens swoon, but privately loyal to his childhood bestie and fellow party member even if neither of them have said anything to each other
