I had no idea when we had the last one of these threads, so I made a new one.

For those of you just tuning in, Dungeons: The Dragoning is the April Fool's joke that was real. It's a high-octane clusterfuck that mixes D&D, 40k, Exalted, WoD, Mass Effect, and just about anything else you could stick a name on. In the grim darkness of the Great Wheel, there is only war, but that doesn't mean you can't have kickass adventures in the thick of it all.

As a reminder, please stop using the Big Book O' Brew and spreading it around. It's unbalanced, hasn't been updated in over a year, isn't going to get updated, and is generally a piece of shit. Everything that was in it can be found on the homebrew forum, only the forum versions get patched and updated whenever something goes wrong.

With that out of the way, I'd love to hear some discussion about the cuhrayzeest game to come out of this board.

Having a ton of Werewolf alts seems like one of those things they did just because no one else did it already.

Same with all the vehicles. No underwater battlemech? Now you have one!

Some look solid enough but some of the other ones seem like for the sake of referencing the old alt. Werewolves or White Wolf variants.

To talk about the game proper, I have a Halloween-themed oneshot coming up to introduce players to the roll/keep system and maybe get them interested in this game.

The plot is going to be about helping a Dullahan get his head back. I haven't quite figured the details, but I want a veritable monster mash.

I don't know, an underwater battlemech might be useful if you're fighting terrors from the deep.

Pull up all of the horror-themed Exalts as player options. If players aren't interested, use them as antagonists.

what kind of monster mash we talking here? Anime monmusu bullshit or classical horrors in the night?

Universal horror, mid-to-late 20th century slashers, classical folklore, anything that's fun but can still be somewhat taken seriously.

Sometimes a person is taken by a strange mood, and just like the dorfs of legend they need to make something ridiculous.

What else could you really make the warform then? Base it on that celtic horse demon I guess.

Sorry for not responding earlier. I'm making premades to streamline the process. Vampire, Werewolf, Promethean, and Paragon for exalts. I'm only using core stuff for player options. I'm a "see a need, fill a need" type.

The original creator probably abandoned it.

You can use homebrew Exalts and some homebrew monster races for villains. Oh yeah, and the Riders of Revelation classes for the Headless Horseman.

Atlantean and Daemonhost needed to be nerfed.

the original exalts, even in a vacuum, had balance issues. I haven't looked at the homebrew forum in a while, so I don't know exactly how their revisions go but i know the Chosen, owing to devotion being kinda a hot mess, was fairly weak and the demonhost was pretty much just blatantly OP.

The only person who can decide if something in the official books needs to be nerfed is the guy who made them.

LawfulNice abandoned the game after Book 2.

It's cool. The Resource regain seems a bit slow for what it is used for however, prioritizing the assets that help shore that up.

Minions are cool but they basically stop even functioning somewhere between level 1 and 2.
How could they be kept relevant?

Well I just finished some revisions that hopefully solve that issue, while also increasing the severity of their weakness as a counterbalance.

I still think that they should just be called dwarves. I get it, 40k is a big influence but they're fucking dwarves. Always have been and always will be.

Feel free to call them Dwarves for your own game. To be honest, I've used "Dwarves" and "Squats" interchangeably in my own games because I kept slipping and eventually started to roll with it.

I bet half of the Great Wheel does too.

Speaking of races, what do you think of the new ones like the Gremlin, the Bugbear and the Troglodyte?

I keep catching myself calling them dwarves.

I think Gremlins needs a tighter focus besides being "small people". I mean, Goliaths had stuff going for them besides being "big buys".

I didn't read up on Bugbears and Trogolodytes yet. What's their shitck?

I don't know, once you hit small bois you have too much variety to deal with to settle on just one thing.

Gremlins are great. mostly for the chibi asset.
I have no commentary on the other two, they just don't interest me enough to put them in my games.

I'll try to add emphasis on being team-oriented suvivalists since 80% of the Great Wheel can kill them easily. Just lemme change up my notes.

Seems to be a reference to D&D monsters. The former are large goblinoids with a penchant for ambushes while the latter are (so far) really smelly pseudo-merfolk. But I am not very well-versed in D&D so take that with a grain of salt.

This has my favorite version of the Thri-Kreen race, by far. A damn shame they aren't standard like Tieflings now.

Gremlins look great, though they seem a bit of a catch-all.

Bugbears seem to be the same as Bugbears from Dungeons and Dragons, savage giant goblins that attack you out of nowhere.
I think Pathfinder had them playable in a book somewhere recentlyish?

Looks like Troglodyes are D&D Troglodytes too, based around living in cave and killing people with their godawful smell.

Agreed. Bug people are cool, and more settings need them as a core option.

Thri-kreen are great fun. Always love throwing them in places.

To be fair that was my intention, with an incredibly-modular racial power and such. Aside from trying to do the above, I don't know how to alleviate that. I don't mind taking suggestions for fluff, though I am very attached to the mechanics for now.

For anyone who cares, I've made a "book 3" post collecting all the book 3 materials in their most up-to-date forms for easy access.

I know a major complaint of the forums is there being too much homebrew stuff, but these are at least established.

Some of the homebrewers play on Roll20...if they can consolidate a schedule. I have to wake up at 3 AM just to attend (good thing the campaign is over).

And then some of them also have games with their own groups, maybe IRL or also online.

I plan on posting a thread for extra minion rules to give them more teeth but...I'll save that for another time when I feel more motivated.

The whole point of homebrew is that it enables you to play stuff that isn't core.
There should never be a limit how much homebrew should be around in any system, that's silly.
A GM might have rules on how much homebrew can be used in a campaign though.

I always figured the point was because If balanced (keyword right there) mechanics can be applied to a concept, then you might as well do it to see what happens when somebody uses it in a game. Hopefully laughs happen but not always.

Well, I made a Space Pirate with Phoenix powers that was also a Boxer.

I also made a young ultra-lucky Gambler Dullahan that was a namer with the Fated from Sigil, obsessed with throwing dice and driving cars.

Sorry for the late reply, I tend to drown myself in numerous tabs.

Anyway I joined to test my own homebrew (the Warfighter class) and someone else's (the current Overlord). Essentially I initially started out hoping to drown my enemies with the boots of my minion squads. I also started out with enough XP to catch up and hit Level 5 early.

However it didn't turn out as easily as minion squads are actually pretty weak without house rules in play. Then there's the part of me gradually shifting how I play from throwing numbers at the enemy to relying on my Killstreak Rewards feat. It's hilarious that I ended up with an "I dun care, mishun accomprished" mentality since I almost always use the Fire Support feat and blow everything to pieces.

It began when the party was buying supplies in a warehouse of sorts, it was for a raid on the Enemy (as in the hindrance) of another player character. However we got ambushed by a hit squad affiliated with a different player character's Enemy. After slugging through smokescreens and being outflanked, I used my Tyranny 3 ability to summon pic related (an insane pyrophiliac) to ignite half the main area while trying to gun down the nearest opposition. Eventually we started pushing the enemy back and as they made a preemptive tactical retreat...

...I used Killstreak Rewards for the first time and absolutely destroyed their getaway vehicle and almost all of their numbers. At the time, the feat had too much projectiles so I left the rest to the GM, who scattered it all over the building and destroying the care of ball bearings that the catgirl was hoping to use as a Chekov's Gun (which never happened in the end). That's how I earned the moniker "General Collateral" from the other players.

Next up was the aforementioned raid on a corporate building of a faction that was the Enemy of the catgirl player. The plan was simple, split into two teams and have Team A sneak into the building while Team B (whom I was part of) acts as a distraction. Unfortunately the plan fell apart in practice, I guess it's because there weren't any external guards to draw out, only turrets. And I was the only guy who was following it at first. So I might as well regroup with the main team after eating homing missiles to the face. Yes that's another facet of General Fai, he rarely dodges attacks and instead keeps eating everything in his face. At least it was only a few Hit Points.

It took several sessions to push through as inside the building was a lot more guarded than we assumed. I lost my custom monsters (including the mad pyrophiliac) and I my minion squads were almost never present. So midway through the assault, I just threw my hands up in the air and declared that the building itself to be my prey. It all went through a span of several sessions, giving me several opportunities to use Killstreak Rewards, once to call in Biofoam to fix myself, once to call in a not-elite-enough minion squad that died too quickly, and once to summon a gigantic drill tank to eat away at the building's foundations just to put the entire adventure on a timer and be damn sure in my destruction.

The drill tank got flipped over by an errant missile so I had to use my Killstreaks in the following session to gradually destroy the building from the top to the bottom. Because I want this building dead and by the People's Army it shall be done so. I was fearing that I would need to do it multiple times assuming that the roof was sturdy, turns out it wasn't. It did tear a napalm-coated hole through the ceiling, causing all of the enemy units stationed in the top floor to come rushing down because I set the place on fire. That's fine, makes it easier for me to get to the top floor and shoot the head honcho that's still hiding up there. And then one player rolled Teleport Storm on his Psychic Phenomena and I suddenly found myself on the room directly above where I was previously standing...which was completely on fire and everyone's dead (including what's left of my minions). ON THE BRIGHT SIDE I AM CLOSER TO MY INITIAL OBJECTIVE OF GETTING TO THE TOP FLOOR.

So there I was, on a half-ruined mess of the upper floors when I had an encounter with one lone machinegunner. The fight was going nowhere so I called in another care package, filled with a Singularity Bomb (homebrew explosive). I messed up somehow (I don't remember what mistake I did) but I blew a hole on the floor and I fell. Keep in mind that the GM described the building to be a Japanese-themed inverse pyramid, so I didn't fall onto the lower floors. Instead I fell straight to the ground, losing my right leg upon impact and, a few rounds later, I had to burn another Hero Point due to blood loss. Luckily I got a bionic leg a few sessions later.

And I did end up killing the building at the end of the assault, by the way. One more firebombing strike and the building was tipping over, shortly after the catgirl Paragon manages to leap out of the crumbling building to safety.

So yeah, there's my kill tally: One giant building, an unknown number of enemy combatants and several of my own men who perished when the ceiling broke and napalm from above showered me in the stuff. I feel so happy about my accomplishment that I didn't bother killing off the survivors I walked into (and they were probably very happy about it).

I might've gotten some details wrong about it, but to be fair it has been a while since it happened so if the other players of the campaign were here they could correct me on that.

Also, yeah, I did nerf Killstreak Rewards' Fire Support option, gave it a lot less projectiles. Still potent, but it is a Level 5 feat. I ought to buff the minions it provides since they're supposed to be the best of the best cavalry though.

It's a good start, honestly. An updated book of brew would be nice, but for people who can't go find the tested stuff, it's still more accessible.

An update probably isn't happening, so the book is shit compared to what's on the forum. The homebrew directory is a convenient placeholder with more content, so I'd use that for the time being.

As an aside, some of the things that got into the BBOB were never tested to begin with. The worst thing about the PDF still circulating is that people keep bitching about problems that were fixed years ago.

Minions are hard, since by the book minions stop being of use somewhere between level 1 and 2.
The idea of giving the Minions extra rolled and kept dice equal to TR instead of just kept dice equal to TR might help a bit to keep them functional.

Seriously. Guy was nuts. I ended up having the unofficial goal of "kill the madman before he kills the rest of us", with an added optional goal of "make it be an accident".

He died three times and only one of them was even indirectly your fault.

But mission accomplished though, and that's what counts.

I'm in an ongoing campaign right now, focusing on a space pirate crew waging war against an evil multi-galactic company (V-Com) . Also trying to keep V-Com from resurrecting Tiamat.

The party is:
Augustus Zhulong Murphy: Human Paragon Kungfu Cowboy Padre from Space Utah with a red right hand (powerfist).

Throg: Ork Mithral Promethean. A Warboss, Paladin of Khrone, and also the tech guy. Very friendly.

Feo: Tau Darksteel Promethean. Either the best or worst Druid. Was once a brilliant scientist, is now a lovable idiot. Carries invasive species in his chest cavity.

Ankhana: Elf Werejaguar. Wants revenge on V-Com for conquistadoring her planet. Stealth and murder expert. Enjoys worshiping Luna while taking mind destroying drugs in her free time.

Nami: Kenku Paragon. Paladin of Bahamut. Assassin. Last Word of Kings. Maintains an alternate media personality that is somewhere between Paris Hilton and Kyary Pamyu Pamyu.

Seraphica: Me. Human Daemonhost (Living Saint) of Vectron. Palatine of the Sisters of Mercy. Agent of the Holy Inquisition. Here with her entire convent to stop Tiamat. Trying to avoid becoming a space pirate.

1/2: This is the session I joined the game. The party, known as the Thunderbird Gang, had arrived on a backwater planet who's primary feature was a Temple-Monastery of Bahamut. They had been lead there by information they had stolen from V-Com about Project Azure, which, thanks to a vision sent by Bahamut to Murphy, the party pieced together was a mission to capture the Blue Skull of Tiamat, essential to her resurrection. Using the time they had before the arrival of V-Com, they helped move the most precious relics of the temple, evacuated it, contact the Inquisition (who they have back-channels to) and got their ships cloaked and into position. They couldn't retrieve the skull themselves in the time they had.

A V-Com Emperor Class Battleship shows up, which the party identifies as being the favored vessel of Madison Banks, an Eldarin V-Com exec who they had tangled with before. The ship immediately begins an orbital laser attack to dig to the site of the skull. Because they are not expecting the Thunderbird Gang, their shields are down, and the gang teleports from one of the Gang's ships (The Lucky Dragon Buffet) to the real space engines of the V-Com ship. There, the gang immediately detonates warp bombs. Think Vortex Grenades. A daemon or two are accidentally summoned in the process, but no worries.
