Capeshit worldbuilding

> Nearly two decades ago, The Happening occurred, a tenth of the population witnessed a sudden flash of bright primatic light and experienced an indescribably painful headache. Moments after the flash, the headache vanished as suddenly as it came, and the tenth found they had gained unexplainable supernatural abilities, i.e superpowers.

>The Happening was not the origin of superhumans, as many already existed from a diverse set of origins such as mutation, magic, alien technology, etc. However, it did massively swell their population, and cause considerable changes to the social dynamic that had been in place and relatively stable since the 1920s.

>Millions normals and superpowered died as for some people "supernatural abilities" turned out to be the capacity to kill with one look, turn into toxic gas or just explode.

THE NIGHT FULL OF CRIES

> At the moment, this alternate earth is in the early 2080's, and humanity has made great strides in genetic engineering, cybernetic augmentation, and artificially recreating superpowers to a limited extent.

>A few months after The Happening, an organization was erected, called The Sternguard. Led by the New York chief of police, Arnie Grouse, who realized the importance of keeping the superhuman population in check after The Happening nearly threw New York into complete chaos. With the support of several other countries, as well as forming a board of representatives from each country, both normal and superhuman, The Sternguard is outfitted with the latest tech (thanks to a few superhumans who were gifted hyper intelligence) and some of the strongest superhumans in the world, and their mission is to move in when local law enforcement cannot handle the super situation, to detain, disable, or even terminate superhuman threats.

BLACK HEARTS FILLED WITH LIES

How bad was the destruction due to people getting dangerous powers, like blow up with the force of a nuclear weapons?

Are there areas that remain uninhabitable?

> Cybernetics and superpowers do not mesh, cybernetics are the mechanical replacement of a body part with an objectively superior artificial variant, whereas superpowers are the precise metaphysical enhancement of the natural body and/or mind. Because of this, cybernetics reduce the strength of the cyborg's superpowers, and for this reason, very few supers have cybernetic enhancements, though they're very popular among normal law enforcement, criminals, and vigilantes.

After The Happening, there were several large scale incidents. One example was several miles of South Dakota getting caught in a massive explosion as a new superhuman's power went crazy the instant he became aware of his power, releasing a massive explosion of energy that vaporized the user and everything in it's path.

However, just as much help was provided thanks to these new superhumans, including a young Indian man who possesses high level teraforming powers, who has been flown around to major destruction states to lend a hand and repair any damage that was caused.

>tfw this was your game setting 2 years ago.

THE CONTRACT

IS IT WORTH THE PRICE?

>This created a massive backlash, stigma and persecution towards these superhuman individuals, which could have resulted in a horrifying civil war across the planet. But through the combined efforts of world governments, as well as the birth of the first 'super team' known as the Pillars of the Horizon, public opinion of superhuman individuals steadily became more positive, as the PotH worked to turn away not just malicious superhumans, but also avert major disasters, work to save people in major incidents, and through co-operation with military forces, take down several major terrorist groups. The acceptance of superhuman individuals across the world became practically commonplace after one of the members of the PotH, a superhuman who called himself Crashmaster, risked his life and nearly died destroying a meteor that was set for hitting Earth.

> Of course, the majority of the population is still violently prejudiced against mutants, because they're visibly and genetically not human.

>Humanitarian-minded supers with the appropriate superpowers periodically reform glaciers and ice shelves, with the threat of global warming gone, pollution runs unchecked again, cities are permanently hidden in smog.

A SOUL LOST TO THE DARKNESS

How big and noticeable are the physical differences?

>This prejudice is not unfounded, as the vast majority of mutants are also highly hostile. Only a lucky few mutants are born, or created, fully sane, the rest usually suffer from some debilitating mental issues, whether it's paranoia so extreme that they attack without warning, god complexes that make them believe they are the next step of humanity, or disassociation that causes the mutants to not consider human worth keeping alive, countless other mental issues plague the mutant population, and the ones who can retain their sanity work to present themselves, individually, as the good mutants, rather than work for their whole 'people'

That just seems silly. People wouldn't just stop giving a shit about not polluting the world if global warming was taken care of. Plus, what about super who work to reduce or undo pollution? If theres enough supers to undo global warming, there has to be just as many working to clean out lakes and rivers of run off, getting rid of smog, cleaning up garbage and litter, and so on and so forth

test

>People wouldn't just stop giving a shit about not polluting the world if global warming was taken care of.

They would have to find something else to make 300 million on. excelsior

Everything from neko cat ears to shit that would make The Thing's skin crawl. Unfortunately, the visibility of a mutant's inhumanity has little to no bearing on their actual mental stability, meaning that some well-meaning mutants are hunted and killed to ensure they didn't harm any humans, while many more less obvious but actually evil mutants have gotten away scot-free.

>The hunting and killing of mutants is an open secret, as few local law enforcement see much use in stopping people from doing so, especially since most of these hunting parties are led by super humans, and because most people still remember the incident in 2045, when the mutants committed horrible atrocities to humans en masse
>However there are some superhumans who are either sympathetic to mutants, or just don't find the random killings to be appropriate, and work to protect mutants to a degree. This is how a handful of good natured mutants have survived long enough to become public figures, which provides them some semblance of protection
>One of the most famous super groups of the modern age, Blitz Stars, actually publicly has two known mutants on their roster, though their real names are kept secret, they are publicly known as Rickshaw and Shake, and despite their mutant status, they do have a sizable fanbase, which also work towards the movement of "not all mutants"

> Rickshaw and Shake are fairly extreme, resembling an anthropomorphic mole and a hawk respectively. This is fairly ironic, as Rickshaw has the power to manipulate the air, and Shake has the power to manipulate the earth.

NOW I'VE LOST IT

I KNOW I CAN KILL

Wait, I thought the Happening triggered the Mutant Gene and those are the superhumans.

Ah, the super garbage man. His powers might not be too flashy, but they are actually way more important than anybody would think.

>Threatened by the emergent strength of the super-humans and of humanity proper, the supernaturals have lifted the veil to secure their future in a world where their prey has become deadlier

No, no, superpowered mutants existed before The Happening, from dozens of completely unrelated sources, but The Happening gave a tenth of the population, mutant or not, superpowers. So you've got insane superpowered mutants existed alongside genetically human supers. And mentioned magic and alien technology being additional Pre-Happening sources of superpowers, which is interesting.

> Together, super garbage man, The Terraformer, and other, less powerful but no less dedicated environmentalist supers work to prevent and reverse the spread of pollution and toxic waste worldwide, and with rapid advancements in artificially replicating their powers, admittedly, on a much, much, smaller scale, the future is looking bright for the earth's ecosphere

>Despite his humorous reputation, and less then stupendous power set, the super known as Recycke is actually one of the most powerful supers in the world, simply because his ability to absorb and compress garbage to an impossibly small degree. making him a human landfill, as well as control anything he considers "garbage", also means he has thousands of tons of garbage that he can release at a moment notice, and if he is ever called into action, even the most dangerous villains can do very little against literal tidal waves of garbage swallowing them up.

> Many scientists are concerned that, in the event Recycke should die, his influence on the mountains of garbage he's accumulated over the years will cease, the better part of a continent will be swamped in garbage. Recycke himself doesn't care, and to quote will, "just like, launch it all into space or somethin', I dunno."
> As grateful as environmentalist scientists, corporate industrialists, bleeding heart hippies and literal coal burners the world over are for Recycke's help, some believe his easygoing attitude is misguided, and that a permanent, non-super solution to the garbage problem needs to be found.

>Recycke gets paid handsomly for being a human landfill, but also gets paid by the recycling industry. Being able to sort and eject garbage freely and orderly saves a lot of time, effort and trouble for the recycling industry, and thus recycling is a lot simpler, but, with the sheer amount of garbage Recycke has gathered, it's unlikely the recycling effort will ever make a dent.

>On the opposite spectrum, there is a superhuman known as Runoff, who, rather than absorbing garbage, absorbs pollution in general, smog, sludge, waste, stuff such as that. And unlike Recycke, Runoff's pollution absorption isn't contained solely to his body, thus he is a walking biohazard, sludge and oil covering his blob like figure, dripping off and being sucked back up into his mass, a haze of exhaust fumes swirling around him. And unlike Recycke's helpful ways, Runoff is a malicious individual, who sucks up pollution solely to use it as a weapon in his villainous escapades

> With the advent of superhumans, after the initial cataclysmic die-off, the earth's population began to increase dramatically, causing massive overpopulation in developing nations and rapidly morphing major cities into sprawling metropolises. Some of the more right-leaning governments, and more radical superhumans, began to feel the answer to the excessive population boom lied in a global forced sterilization and eugenics program.
> Luckily, a coalition of space agencies, collaborating with The Terraformer and volunteer super-geniuses, were able to implement the extraterrestrial colonization initiative several decades ahead of schedule, creating several enormous dome cities on the surface of the Moon, and Mars, each one with its own self-contained atmosphere and carefully regulated ecosystem.
> By relocating volunteers that met the minimum criteria, an IQ of at least 115 and a lack of genetic disorders and mutations, the international space agency coalition was able to move little over half a billion people and prevent overcrowding on earth.
> However, the dome cities have only so much space, and the problem of overpopulation is still quite pressing. Efforts to construct more dome cities and outright terraform the surfaces of the Moon and Mars are underway, though it may be decades before they are suitable for unaugmented human habitation.

THE TRUTH EXISTS BEYOND THE GATE

>In the dawn of the new age of space travel, one super, above all, has lent to the progression of space tech. He goes by the name of Space-Ace, and possesses a unique combination of powers. He can survive the vacuum of space, his body is durable enough to survive re-entry and escape velocity, and he possesses a highly advanced internal navigation instinct, so not even the confusing direction of being in space can stumble him up. With his powers he has been one of the leading allies of space travel and supporting the colonization of planets

>Many companies were either formed or had drastic changes following the influx of superhumans and mutants, as well as the deaths of many people around the world
>Among those are Flores Biomedical and the Superhumans of London
>The former is dedicated to applying the skills of highly intelligent superhumans to help normals, and also hiring superhumans with skills related to healing and technology for various purposes.
>However, it also has another agenda- bringing powers, or as close to them as they can get, out of pure fate and into the hands of those with money- at this point it only really includes cybernetics, which are hardly powers, but there are innovations being made with the help of a few select superhumans which may start to change the order of things...

>Another company is the Superhuman Charter Corp, a society of superhumans under the legislation of the government of the United Kingdom. The main purpose of this company is to hire out these superhumans for various tasks, including containing other superhumans and more commercial activities such as construction, excavation, and acquisition of resources.

Sorry if this is shit or anything.

Good to see some of Veeky Forums still has a sense of humor.

> Several covert alien organizations have spent centuries slowly infiltrating earthly society and nudging them towards developing in a way that will eventually make them ideal slave/cattle race for their respective species, but with the unexpected Happening, their cover being blown by a few pesky mind readers, and humans are advancing far too quickly for comfort, some aliens have resorted their efforts toward sabotaging the space colonization attempts and advanced technology. In other news, conspiracy theorists are incredibly smug that they've finally been vindicated.

Don't be, this is some solid shit and you should be proud.

>Forgot to edit the SoL to be the SCC
these are the same thing if i didn't make it clear, sorry for fucking that up
n-no you

>thread about superhero setting
>supremely lazy and uninteresting origin for powers
>can't even ignore it because it was a whole big thing and caused the deaths of millions because that's a fun thing to have in your setting for some reason and had massive ramifications and shaped the world
>everybody throwing whatever they want at the wall to see if it sticks like aliens and magic and cybperpunk shit but also while presumably trying to have a "realistic" setting that centers around the "logical" impact of powers on the world as we know it, or otherwise want to make some super shitty grimdark setting like Wildbow on cocaine, only they aren't even remotely good at it
>only a handful of posts even make a bare mention to people operating as superheroes

Well I was thinking about making my own thread to make a superhero setting to run a game in, but I can clearly see that it would be a waste of time. So thanks for that.

Just give me second edition, please

This reminds me a lot about Infamous

What more do you expect from little over two dozen anonymous neckbeards on Veeky Forums?

Some coherency. I don't even know why I go into worldbuilding threads. It all devolves into a sink. Rapidly. And then people being retarded. Like that one setting that was supposed to be fantasy, but in the modern, normal world. Had rednecks fighting a dragon out of their pick-up as the OP picture. Thought it had real potential, jamming the supernatural in the mundane like and normalizing it, but nope. Everyone was all about flying cities and fantasy landscapes and wanting magic to be next to fucking useless. Fuck me man, I wanted goblins in a rumpled suit riding a subway to get to their 9-5 job and the government magic departments being run by shady mages in tuxedos and for there to be teleportation licenses that you have to get at a DMV equivalent, long lines and dull room and all.

But nope, it all turned into a sink with high fantasy shit. Just like this thread is barely about superheroes and more like "look how shitty the world would be if powers were real, also if aliens and magic and super science was real". I didn't realize it was physically possible to miss the point this hard.

Alright I'm done being mad. Don't reply to me, keep having fun or whatever.

Yep, that's the problem when a few dozen people are working on the same project, with no coherency or organization, but each with their own vision of an end goal. That's why I prefer to work alone, but setting threads can be fun sometimes.

Fuck, I've never seen a thread die so quickly. Congrats user.
