Sure why not.

Can an evil monster that devours souls work as a horror monster?

They're illusionist tricksters. That's just a hop skip and jump away from horror antagonist.

They can, but you'll be fighting years of pussification and fetishization of Kitsune into waifubait.

Why couldn't they?

user you can have waifubait and horror

>years of pussification and fetishization of Kitsune into waifubait.
Haven't kitsune always trended in that direction from their origins in Japanese folklore though?

Ehh... No. You see, Kitsune were form the very start waifubait. Literally. They are described as literally perfect wives. The Chinese and Korean counterparts, though, make perfect villains. Gumiho's, I think one of them is called. Basically the same shtick, fox spirits able to turn into beautiful women at will, impressive magical powers, particularly in illusions and trickery. They eat souls, or livers, or hearts, and are unabashedly evil.

Here, if your players are weeaboo waifuists that make them THINK it's a kitsune. Activate them boners/protective instincts, possibly use that anime picture. Make them swear to protect this beauty of their own free will, then pick them off because they don't actually know shit about culture.

Pretty much.

>Imma' start calling japanese "foxfuckers" now

Kitsune have this whole "interplay of sexuality and horror" thing. They ARE perfect wives, in the sense that they're beautiful, wise, loyal, et cetera.
But they're also batshit loco yandere.
Oh you went to lunch with your sister? Why? Do you love her more than me, user?
And then your sister turns up dead.

Why not go with cat-demons?
Like a clan of insanely lucky necromancers?

The legend is basically she marries a samurai, and the two of them live together in a happy normal life, except it's all an illusion and the samurai is living in a dialpidated shack, sweet talking a fox.

>The legend is basically she marries a samurai, and the two of them live together in a happy normal life, except it's all an illusion and the samurai is living in a dialpidated shack, sweet talking a fox.
>the samurai in the legend really WAS a 'foxfucker'
That made my day user.

No, look, Gumiho's problem is that they're BORING. Seriously "beautiful women who, surprise, is actually a monster out for your squishy bits (and not in a good way)" is a trope that transcends time and culture.

Kitsune, however, can do so much more. They're sorcerers connected to spirit world and their motives don't end on "eat people". PCs might assist Kitsune at first, only to realize that they're doing her bidding, assisting her in her bloody revenge for some weird reason, or helping her summon hell on earth...

Kitsune are alluring, powerful and incomprehensible. They make perfect horror villains in the same way true fae do - physical, psychological and magical fuckery, all at once.

>Time for the big reveal
>THE GM IS A WEEB!
Yeah, that is pretty horrifying

...and the subtle shame/disgust of fox fucking.

>I can't describe how this phrase has literally made my day.

You know, it IS possible to use interesting facets of different cultures at the table.

Is that a guy or a girl?

Looks like a dude to me

>one dick in the dark
Not scary unless the dick isn't yours.

Yes.

They can show you illusions, change shape, attack with magic. They always lie and their motives are never really clear. In folklore, they're the #1 cause of possessions.

They've even got a calling card with the floating fox fire. And like all Japanese monsters, they can easily team up with other ghosts to really fuck people over.

Doesn't matter.
If it's from Japan, it'll have a dick regardless of the laws of god or man.

>"beautiful women who, surprise, is actually a monster out for your squishy bits (and not in a good way)"
Fairly sure that the Greeks were doing that with half-fish.

ebin

*nekomancers

That's more of a western thing though

user, roughtly 90% of Japanese female monsters of any sorts run on theme of "thinking with your penis rather than your head is going to get you killed in a truly gruesome fashion".
The other 10% are butt-ugly monsters that don't have time to play with their meal, so will devour you instantly.

tl;dr it's horrific monster precisely because it's fuckable.

fuckin' weebs

Yes. Turn it into a serial rapist/killer played like an 80s/90s horror villain (since it's a kitsune... Leprechaun)... But with a 3-foot wide, 8 gauge horse cock that ejaculates semen under enough pressure to pop a condom.

Short: Slasher movie... But with a rapist furry futa.

Pic not related.

Course they can. The waifu stories get all the media, but kitsune not only have skill sets (illusion & enchantment spellcasting, for a start) that lend themselves to a horrific role, but they have hostile stories too.

Many other murderous "human" yokai, like the Kuchisake-onna, are said to have been identities taken up by shapeshifting kitsune.

Give her a reason to do evil things, whether it's fey-like amoral mischief, harvesting human souls/blood/hearts for power, whatever, and she can work fine. Or he, whatever.

>m-moshi moshi

yo futas gay mate.

>Kitsune are alluring, powerful and incomprehensible. They make perfect horror villains in the same way true fae do - physical, psychological and magical fuckery, all at once.
According to the stories Kitsune are also very loyal to their friends, and while some of the stories have the kitsune doing mischievous things, they are rarely evil.

In one story, a man goes drinking with a kitsune on some fancy balcony, gets hella drunk, falls off the balcony, and discovers there is no balcony and he is on the other side of the country. It's a morality story about the dangers of alcohol.

In another story, a man marries a kitsune unknowingly, has children and is happy. Eventually some villagers find out and chase her out of town, and the husband shouts after her as she runs "You are still my wife and the mother of our children and you will always be welcome in our home!" In some versions of the story, she returns to visit at night. This might have been an explanation to children about why their mothers are gone/deceased in an era before modern medicine.

Unless you do one hell of a good job, no

>And like all Japanese monsters, they can easily team up with other ghosts to really fuck people over.
You could do something fun with expies of the Three Great Evil Yokai.

>regardless of the laws of god
Maybe not your god.
>Inari

Yup

Why? I mean it's pretty logical and reasonable folklore. It boils down to the message of "adultery is bad and being a sex-hungry moron is a bad thing to do and you are going to die because of it one day". Doesn't really matter if by syphilis, angry wife armed with a knife or ripped to shreds by some monster.

And definitely better than "blame the female for raping her, because you couldn't kepp your dick in your pants" stuff that runs rampart throughout Abrahamic religions

>can the race of soul eating witches be horror monsters?
sure, hell- yandere can be scary enough on their own, give one magic and make it inhuman

ghost of all types were waifu'd during the 17th century. The originals are at best deeply unsettling, but usually callous, heretical and bloodthirsty.

Are you kidding? There are nine tailed fox women who are kitsune in all but name called kumiho, they hate men and they love nothing more than to torture them and eat their livers. Often while they are alive.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kumiho

It' a trickster apparition of the woods. If it looks like a female it's a male, and if it IS a female she's probably dead or something.
