1976 – The United Nations General Assembly adopts the Convention on the Prohibition of Military or Any Other Hostile Use of Environmental Modification Techniques.

It is 76 years since the the British Royal Navy battleship HMS Prince of Wales and battlecruiser HMS Repulse were sunk by land-based bombers and torpedo bombers of the Imperial Japanese Navy. The objective of Force Z, which consisted of one battleship, one battlecruiser and four destroyers, was to intercept the Japanese invasion fleet north of Malaya. However, the task force sailed without any air support, which had been declined by Admiral Sir Tom Phillips, the commander of Force Z, in favour of maintaining radio silence. Although the British had a close encounter with Japanese heavy surface units, the force failed to find and destroy the main convoy. On their return to Singapore they were attacked in open waters and sunk by long-range medium bombers. Along with the attack on Pearl Harbor only a few days earlier, the Malaya engagement illustrated the effectiveness of aerial attacks against even the heaviest of naval assets if they were not protected by air cover, and led the Allies to place importance on their aircraft carriers over battleships.

As tensions with Japan had begun to rise in late 1941, Britain looked to bolster their position in the Far East. Already deeply embroiled on multiple fronts against Germany and Italy, the Royal Navy's options were limited in regard to available reinforcements. Though First Sea Lord Sir Dudley Pound argued that the key base at Singapore could only be held by diverting the bulk of the Royal Navy's capital ships to the region, Prime Minister Winston Churchill felt that the arrival of two or three capital ships would serve as a deterrent against Japanese expansionism. With the situation in Europe improving slightly, Churchill directed that the battleship HMS Prince of Wales, the battlecruiser HMS Repulse, and the new carrier HMS Indomitable be sent to Singapore.

Having clashed with Bismarck at the Battle of the Denmark Strait earlier that year, Prince of Wales was one of the Royal Navy's newest battleships. Conversely, Repulse had joined the fleet in 1916 and was a veteran of World War I. Like Prince of Wales, Indomitable was a new ship and entered commission in October 1941. Sailing for the Caribbean on its maiden voyage, it struck a reef near Jamaica on November 3. The grounding caused enough damage that the carrier was sent to Norfolk, VA for repairs. As result, Prince of Wales, Repulse, and four destroyers, collectively dubbed Force G, sailed for the Far East without it. Reaching Singapore on December 2, 1941, Force G was redesignated Force Z and came under the direction of newly-appointed Eastern Fleet commander Admiral Sir Tom Phillips.

Aware of the arrival of Force Z from Churchill's public statements, Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, commander of the Japanese Combined Fleet, directed that additional bombers be sent to occupied French Indochina. These saw thirty-six modern Mitsubishi G4M (Betty) bombers reinforce the air groups which largely flew aging Mitsubishi G3Ms (Nell). In addition, Japanese air crews began training for strikes against maneuvering capital ships at sea. These aircaft were in place when the Japanese opened hostilities on December 7/8.

Learning of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Phillips soon concluded that the prewar Anglo-American plans, which called for joint action in the defense of the Philippines and Singapore, would be impossible. With the Japanese making swift gains on the Malayan Peninsula, Phillips looked for ways to aid in its defense. Though MacArthur and Hart had advised him that Prince of Wales and Repulse would be insufficient for halting the Japanese, he began planning an operation to strike at the Japanese invasion convoys.

In making his plans, Phillips turned down offers of air cover from the Royal Air Force. This decision may have been influenced by Phillips' confidence in his ships' anti-aircraft defenses as well as the fact that no major capital ship had be ever been sunk at sea by aircraft alone. Learning of a Japanese convoy bound for Malaya, Phillips sailed with Prince of Wales, Repulse, and the destroyers HMS Electra, HMS Express, HMS Tenedos, and HMAS Vampire at 5:10 PM on December 8. Turning north, he hoped to attack the Japanese near Singora on December 10.

At 2:00 PM on December 9, the Japanese submarine I-65 spotted Force Z and began shadowing the British ships. Reporting their position, it lost contact after five hours. Alerted to Phillips' movement, Vice Admiral Jisaburo Ozawa directed his warships to escort the invasion fleet back to Cam Ranh Bay. Around 5:30 PM, two Japanese scout planes again located Force Z and reported its position. Ashore, the Japanese air groups began preparing to mount an attack as there was concern that the British would locate the invasion convoy. Electing to abandon the attack on Singora, Phillips turned south at 8:15 PM. Launching after dark, the Japanese aircraft failed to locate the British ships.

A short time later, a Japanese scout aircraft accidently dropped a flare over the heavy cruiser Chokai which was serving as a convoy escort. This was seen by Phillips whose force was five miles away. Believing his ships had been detected as the Japanese were not visible on Prince of Wales' radar, he ordered Force Z to return to Singapore at 8:55 PM. After midnight, Phillips received a false report of enemy landings at Kuantan and turned in that direction. At 3:40 AM on December 10, the submarine I-58 spotted the British and reported their position. Having armed their aircraft with bombs and torpedoes, the three Japanese air groups began launching at 7:55 AM.

Around 10:00 AM, Phillips began getting reports from Tenedos, which had been detached earlier, that it was under attack. Mistaking the destroyer for one of the larger ships, nine G3Ms had begun bombing it. Fifteen minutes later, Force Z was spotted by a Japanese scout plane which reported its precise position. Converging on the location, the Japanese bombers began attacking in small groups. The first wave, consisting of 8 G3Ms, arrived at 11:13 AM and attacked Repulse with bombs, scoring one hit which did minor damage. Around 11:40 AM, 17 torpedo-equipped G3Ms arrived with nine attacking Prince of Wales and eight attacking Repulse. While the latter ship survived unscathed, Prince of Wales sustained a hit where its outer port propeller shaft exited the hull. Causing severe flooding, the damage also slowed the ship to 16 knots and led to an 11.5 degree list. The hit also cut electrical power which left pumps inoperable and many anti-aircraft mounts unable to traverse.

At 12:20 PM, Prince of Wales took three torpedo hits to its starboard side. Kanoya aircraft also struck at Repulse and attacked both sides of the ship. Bracketed, it was hit by four torpedoes. Lacking anti-torpedo blisters, Repulse quickly began to flood and Captain William Tennant ordered abandon ship. Capsizing, it sank at 12:33 PM. Clinging to life and limping along on one propeller, Prince of Wales came under a bomb attack eight minutes later. Taking one hit, it slowly began rolling to port. Coming alongside, Express began removing the ship's crew. At 1:18 PM, Prince of Wales capsized and hit the destroyer as it sank. Though taking minor damage, Express survived.

In the sinking of Force Z, the Royal Navy lost a battleship, a battlecruiser, and 840 sailors killed, including Phillips. Japanese losses amounted to three aircraft and 18 dead.

The morning after the battle, Prime Minister Winston Churchill received a phone call at his bedside from Sir Dudley Pound, the First Sea Lord:
Pound: Prime Minister, I have to report to you that the Prince of Wales and the Repulse have both been sunk by the Japanese – we think by aircraft. Tom Phillips is drowned.
Churchill: Are you sure it's true?
Pound: There is no doubt at all.
Churchill hung up.

He later wrote : "In all the war, I never received a more direct shock... As I turned over and twisted in bed the full horror of the news sank in upon me. There were no British or American ships in the Indian Ocean or the Pacific except the American survivors of Pearl Harbor, who were hastening back to California. Over all this vast expanse of waters Japan was supreme, and we everywhere were weak and naked."

Today is the 352nd birthday of the Netherlands Marine Corps (Korps Mariniers). The oldest branch of the Dutch military, they are the marine corps and amphibious infantry component of the Royal Netherlands Navy. The marines are trained to operate anywhere in the world in all environments, under any condition and circumstance, as a rapid reaction force. The Korps Mariniers can be deployed to any location in the world within 48 hours. Their motto is Qua Patet Orbis ("As Far As The World Extends").

Their battle honours are:
Chatham 1667, Kijkduin 1673, Senneffe 1674, Spain 1702–13, West Indies 1764 & 1772–77, Dogger Bank 1781, Algiers 1816, Bali 1846–49, Aceh 1873–76, Rotterdam 1940, Java Sea 1942, East Java 1942, Java and Madura 1946–49, New Guinea 1962, Cambodia 1992–9

On 11 June 1977, the Unit Interventie Mariniers (Marine Intervention Unit, UIM) of the Dutch Marine Corps stormed a train that was being held hostage since 23 May by armed South Moluccan nationalists in the village of De Punt, in the province of Drenthe. Six Royal Netherlands Air Force F-104 Starfighters buzzed the train as a diversion just before the assault. Six terrorists and two hostages were killed in the storming. In recent years the Corps has served in Afghanistan, Congo, Iraq and Liberia.

The Corps celebrates its birthday each year at the Oostplein (lit., East Square) in Rotterdam, where all fallen (ex) corpsmembers are remembered.

Even by the standards of the Italian Wars, that one was a clusterfuck.

Why jesus?

Sexy as fuck

The Italian Wars are like a Marx Brothers movie.

MiGs over North Vietnam - Excellent look at the "other side" of the air war. Lots of first hand accounts and a real page turner.

The 'Wings over Vietnam' series on youtube is pretty cool too, goes over all the aspects of U.S. air power.

What mini suppliers have a range of samurai/sengekou-jidai models, preferably multipart? I know Essex has some of the tiny ones, but I was hoping for something in the 25mm 30mm scales, and the Warlord games ones are too expensive for how many you get(fourty bucks for three models or something, because it'/s some sort of specialist game).

Warlord has the only plastics as far as I know.

Perry has a fairly wide range of metals though.

Checking out Perry now. They were the guys who made the majority of the models for older Warhammer, werent they? Seen their stuff before, they do good work.

And the Samurai line they have is perfect! I just wish they had some casualty models(dead and dying Ashigaru, dead and dying Samurai, ect), but maybe they have that logged under a different model range?

Also, is it what you see what you get? For example,
>perry-miniatures.com/product_info.php?cPath=23_38&products_id=2304&osCsid=ve7qtqum4k1tp4mhtpos4g5ei5
has six models in the picture, but it has no description. Safe to assume that youre only getting six models, yeah?

Also, lovin' these prices.

Thanks!

It was Snakes and Slicks, cheers. Looks pretty interesting but last post I saw in the archive says it's still in dev

I think they've got some casualties in there somewhere...

But yeah, you get what you see.

Just a heads up, the mold quality is a bit hit or miss. The samurai are one of the older ranges and I don't think there's been enough maintenance on the molds.

oooooh, pretty....

Kinda funny, I think the Perry Samurai range is about 20 years old at this point. And still the go-to for 28mm samurai despite apparently being a paint in the arse to paint because of the detailing.

Thanks, I'd already started to read "The Hunter Killers: The Extraordinary Story of the First Wild Weasels" as I've always thought they had the coolest mission.

Do you know where the decals in that photo came from? I bought some packs with roundels and NAVY/USAF from Picoarmor, but it'd be cool to get squadron insignias and ship numbers.

Looking at starting 7YW, chasing several recommendations for manufacturers in any scale 20mm and under, prioritised by range completion and quality.

Pendraken in 10mm looks quite comprehensive and also high quality. Would these be one of the better choices out there?

>Do you know where the decals in that photo came from
nope not sure sorry. I believe they are 1/300 though

Zvezda 1/72 - they are a bit big for 1/72, and they are beautiful. Not exactly cheap, but if you can find the boardgame, it's somewhat worth it - you get a lot ot figures and a Samurai C&C.

Me and my mates just played FLAC last night for the first time. We had a good time. Because it plays quick, we got in a couple of games. Not bad for learning a new game.

We used counters from a board game to play, but we now want to get some miniatures. Any recommendations?

FLAC is free and we DLed it from here:

boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/160091/flac-fast-large-air-combats

1/600 from Tumbling dice are cheap and great quality. You'll need to buy or make flying stands for them though.

cigarboxbattlestore.bigcartel.com/

anyone bought or played on one of these mats?

It says they're made from fleece. I am not a native english speaker but i understand that to be wool. Is it possible to print in detail on that surface? Also would the heavier models with smaller bases tip over on that material? They look good but i have been disappointed before

I have not tried FLAC yet, but if you are looking for some easy to use miniatures, maybe the Wings of Glory packs would be the answer.

Depends at what scale you want?

For most air combat games with miniatures I recommend 1/200, 1/144, or 1/100 scale.

Check out
armamentsinminiature.com/
They have a good 1/200 and 1/100 selection.

That's a different material, also called fleece.
What they're using is polar fleece (you may know it as "polar" or something), made from polyester. It should be fine for gaming mats.

I also have it on good authority that Cigar Box's mats are comfy as fuck and make great blankets in a pinch.

Searching for the book

From Robert Leonhard:

The Art of Maneuver: Maneuver Warfare Theory and Airland Battle

Can anyone help me with that?

Wehraboos-

Can late war SS and Heer figures be used interchangeably? I'm wanting to put together a late war Heer platoon in the reversible winter uniforms, can I use SS figures and paint the camo side with a Heer print?

From looking at the Osprey plates it appears they're the same other than the color of the camo side (figure #1 in both plates) - am I missing anything there?

The SS wore camo smocks, which were pullovers. The Heer wore their camo zelts like ponchos.

Oops, just noticed you said winter. I'm not as well versed in that, but it should work.

Didn't the Heer have at least some camo uniforms as well (esåecially for panzergrenadiers), though not as common as zeltbahn ponchos?

>900 page book on Stalingrad just arrived in the mail

So what /hwg/-related purchases have you made while drunk?

Some, but the camo zelt was more common regardless of unit due to supply issues.

you can
only partially right.
First of all, he talks about winter, so the smocks (being only light jackets) are not really an option here.
Zeltbahn on the other hand was the standard equipment for all german soldiers, Wehrmacht, Luftwaffe and Waffen SS alike. The difference was the camo pattern. (as you might know, ss and luftwaffe had their own patterns).
Again, not an item for winter, but certainly could be worn above everything else in case of rain.

From 43 onwards, those padded parkas and overalls started to appear for the german troops, again, only the camo being the difference between SS and Wehrmacht.
You could argue that the SS had the so-called "Kharkov-parka" (a heavy jacket with fur inlay) first, but Wehrmacht used these as well.

With minis you should look at the smaller details, like the placement of the eagle on the field cap etc.
Overall german minis are interchangable for the most part with exceptions of the mentioned camo smocks (without a hood!) for early-mid ss and the destinct fallschirmjäger items noone else would have.
If the camo jacket had a hood, it could appear in Splittertarn as well as Oakleave camo.

...

Hey /hwg/ I bought a sherman firefly from Warlord games and I wanna put the commander in but I was wondering what colours I'd use for the commander. Black beret but what colours for the khaki(?) overalls he seems to be wearing.

Also the it says the firefly would be in a troop, 3 tanks (shermans or cromwells) and I was wondering where the churchill tank fits into this. Did the firefly accompany churchill troops or did churchill tanks support infantry and stay back unlike Cromwell and Shermans cause I know the brits had chariot tanks and infantry tanks

They had, but it was a slightly different cut. Honestly, for the smocks, it's not a problem if you paint them differently. Helmet covers are a different story, because the SS camo covers were a lot looser on the helmet.

Use English uniform for the overall.

The Churchills were in their own units as they were Infantry Tanks.

Many helmet covers were unofficial made by unit tailors anyway, so i think he can get away with that too.

Excellent thanks.

Why are Sengoku period armors so aesthetic?

They were the top-end culmination of centuries of constant warfare in Japan, mixed with a bit of imported European know-how and design in some cases.

Are those Perry?

They just have the right combination of lacquer, lacing and ostentatious helmets without becoming a garish mess.

Steel Fist

There was a recent price drop so I'm planning on picking up some packs as well.

1/144 scale.

Excellent thanks. In 20mm scale and with my painting ability I’m not going to worry about details like eagle insignia. Thanks again, really helpful

Where to get them?

Same reason as Landsknects.

For the user who was considering By Fire and Sword. Wargamer.pl have got their army builder website up and mostly working.

It has most of the skirmish lists as well the unit stats and list special rules so combined with the main rules.pdf you have all the rules and just need some models.

did they get erections during combat?

You don't stick your dick in it.

It was that sort of time period where instead of wanting to conceal yourself on the battlefield, you wanted to send the message 'HEY MOTHERFUCKER, YOU WANNA MESS WITH THIS?'

.

>he doesn't stick his dick in it

Wait, do you not?

What do you all recommend for war games? Preferably solo, but 2 player that’s playable solo works. Main fields of interest are Ww2 and American Civil War, but would totally consider other eras. I’ve mainly only played computer games and really want to try the tabletop versions. Thank you!

Phew... talk about an open-ended question! You might as well ask for recommendations to movies, music, food, booze, etc.

You did mention solo games and that helps at little. There are many more solo hex&chit games than solo minis games. Hex&chit also has a lower "start up" cost, although the figs you buy & paint for various minis rule sets can be used for many other rules.

Board Game Geek (BGG) would be a good place to start. You can search for titles by type and era like "solo" and "WW2". Off the top of my pointy head, solo WW2 titles include B17, B29, Patton's Best, and Ambush among others. BGG can also point you at publishers like Decision Game, GMT, Avalanche, etc. who publish wargames.

Much like solo RPGs and for much the same reasons, there are many more solo wargaming titles and option currently than there were only a few years ago.

Good luck and have fun searching.

Nah. Remember, *without* becoming a garish mess.

Oh sorry. I guess that is rather open ended. Hex&chit sounds like the type I’m looking for, not miniature games. I don’t have the skill for all that painting. Thank you for some resources/suggestions

Any recommended slightly more than begginer level games?

>Oh sorry.

No no no, please don't apologize! There's so MUCH info to give and a hard character limit in which to do it!

As for beginner or starter level games, BGG rates each title by complexity.

Thank you again. Looks like I’ll be heading down the bgg rabbit hole!

>Looks like I’ll be heading down the bgg rabbit hole!

It is a rabbit hole. You can lose yourself for HOURS there.

Check out consimworld too. It's more of a pure forum than BGG's rating, file sharing, & posting setup. You can identify a game at BGG and then go to consimworld to read discussions dedicated to that game alone with play throughs and other stuff.

Can some post that badass pic of that 15-20mm ww1 game kinda akin to flames of war.

Really in the mood for some ww1 modelling because I feel that war doesn't get enough love.

Hope this can be of some use.

Not sure which game you mean, but I have a few shots of some of our Westfront games and miniatures - 1/72 scale

It's just a picture of tanks and infantry assaulting a town but damn those look cool too.

You might be thinking of the Cambrai 1917 game at Partizan this year

...

Some of the popular current solo wargames include Fields of Fire, Warfighter and Warfighter WW2, Phantom Leader, Hornet Leader, Target for Today, Field Commander: Napoleon, Sherman Leader.

This is it. What game is this? Just cambrai or?

The scenario was Cambrai. I think the rules set was one of the Lardies though.

Apparently there's an article about it in Wargames Illustrated 360 (October 2017), if you can track it down
It's the guys from Great War Miniatures, run by Aly Morrison, who worked for Citadel back in the day
It was indeed a stylized Cambrai 2017 using their 28mm minis with the Lardies' Mud and Blood rules

Mud and blood is 15mm right?

From the rules:
In constructing these rules we attempted to find a scale that was both aesthetically pleasing and practical
in representing the range of weapons used at this level. In the end we settled on 12” = 40 yards which
looks perfect with 28mm figures, but in fact is closer to 15mm figures, with 15mm being equal to 6’.

Was gonna do battlegroup.... but fuck i've been on a trend of loving ww1 armor lately.

The Wing Kit Collections are produced in Japan. You can find several sites online that sell them. I have not found a shop in the UK that stocks them.

The companies webpage is:
f-toys.net

One good online stores is:
radjapan.ocnk.net

If you do a search for Wing Kit Collection, you will find shops and more information. Also, ebay can be a good source to find the kits.

The bad news is that the older sets are much harder to find.

...

Go for Fields of Fire (GMT) or Omaha Beach Solitaire (Decision Games).
Best WW2 solo games currently on the market.
Omaha is easier than FoF.

Thanks.

I think there is a fan-made WWI hack for Battlegroup somewhere on the internet. Don't quote me on it though.

Odd request, but does anyone have that illustration of the British Marine(?) with a Sten gun in a "the time has come and so have I" pose?

Apologies if the description makes no sense.

>British Marine(?) with a Sten gun in a "the time has come and so have I" pose?
That's LTC "H" Jones earning his posthumous VC as he was killed the head of his Paras, leading the charge at Goose Green, Falklands 1982

...

For some reason the only time you see rules that explicitly state what scale to use is when that company also makes miniatures in that scale

I vaguely recall seeing Chain of Command or maybe Through the Mud & Blood modified for ‘Back of Beyond’ (1920-30s China/Central Asia). That or even Spanish Civil War would give you more options for planes/armored trains/artillery while still sticking to a more WW1 kind of tech level

I JUST WANT TO PAINT MY LATE ROMANS

Thanks to the user who sent me this for secret Santa. It's really awesome

Really cool!
