Rate my dice

also just general dice dicussion thread.

I've generally found that the more "decorative" or "baroque" dice are, the less balanced they are. It's a case of "Looks kewl, rolls like shit".

Some people like dice which produce skewed results and some people don't like those people.

Any recommendations for nice designer dice then? I don't want unreadable or super intricate, but I'd like something a little more upscale than simple plastics.

Chessex. The more "involved" the designs on each face are, the less likely the dice are balanced.

Dice are a tool and not fucking fashion accessory.

It's ok.

Look fine enough, though I personally think that some kind of black gloss paint or enamel instead of the darker gold in the recesses of the faces would improve them drastically.

>Chessex
>guy obsessed with balanced dice recommends the famously unbalanced Chessex
Try again, friendo.

They look pretty good, friend. Brass?

Also, dice threads always make me happy. Looking to purchase something new soon, thinking about getting some good bone dice. Any suggestions?

>Dice are a toy and not a fucking plumber's spanner

Fixed that for you. I have the $$$ and once you grow up, you start appreciating craftsmanship for its own sake.

Wait, you actually roll your dice?

I'm curious about hippo ivory. Not endangered and nice feel, plus no denting or table damage.

Or a super hard wood like ebony.

The problem is that while there's a company that does all this, it's got a shit terrible reputation on the internet for going years before delivery on stuff that's marked in stock.

So what instead? Game Science?

Are you buying the wizard set?

If you want balance, Game Science is definitely better than Chessex, though there is no perfectly balanced die manufacturer. If you're super dedicated, you can use casino dice for your d6s.

Ivory would be wonderful but it's rare to find a worker who can do it justice. I don't know any personally.

As for ebony and other wooden dice, I think I can help you on that one actually. Wyrmwood Gaming has access to dozens of woods and can produce great work. You'd have to contact them and order it specially but I don't see why they couldn't or wouldn't do it for you.

Irondie are my favorite "scuplted" metal d6. Quality casting, well balanced, easily readable, and quite heavy. Their site is usually out of stock, but check amazon/ebay. I also often see some irondie show up at game shops and con vendors.
Not a big fan of their non-d6 dice.

Q Workshop probably has the best price and quality for "designer dice" in plastic and metal. Good balance, solid manufacturing. Much better than Chessx. Some of the designs are a bit of a mess, but they have some good, readable ones too.

Avoid Crystal Caste. Their metal dice are too rounded, and they look kinda cheap. Their stone dice look amazing, but will probably shatter the moment they fall off the table.

Made By Wombat on Shapeways has some amazing 3d printed metal dice. Probably too "elaborate" for what you want, tho.

My biggest problem with metal dice is that they scratch pretty easily if two metal dice hit each other. Don't just toss them into a dice bag. You'd probably want a box with foam slots for each die. Personally, I keep a single metal d20 in my dice bag, and I leave my other metal dice at home.

Thanks for the advice!

These look cool. They are metal, heavy and decorative, but tasteful. I've seen metal dice that have been really gawdy, in the past.

Gamecience dice if you're looking for randomization. Chessex uses rock tumblers.

Alternatively if you only use d6's you could invest in casino dice, dice balancing calipers and a portable practice craps table set-up with a felt floor and bumpers. But that is only for madmen fascinated by randomization.

Koplow dice for me.

Crooked dice are crooked dice. The fact that they look pretty doesn't mean shit.

If you want to buy art, be my guest. If you want to use dice you know aren't balanced because they look shiny, get off my table.

Please explain why I am a new friend and dont understand why it matters that much? Is it because they are multi colored? cheap? I dont know what kind of dice i have i just bought them over time at different stores robably have a lot that look like these

Your set of dice is curious in that it lacks a d4, a second d10 for percentile rolls, and has a d16.

Just what games are you playing?

His set of dice? My set of dice, I'm the user that posted the pic.

Understood.

So why do you have a D16?

It's handy as fuck to have that die to bridge the gap between d12s and d20s. I use it for high level monk damage, claw/bite damage for certain age categories of dragons, and miscellaneous skill checks under certain circumstances (mostly when a heavily encumbered character is attempting something stealthy or athletic).

>Koplow dice
these frankly are gorgeous

I like skullsplitter dice.

I picked these up recently. They're from 'cardboardclothing.com' oddly enough. They're damn nice - and will double as lethal sling ammo / caltrops in a pinch.

Patrician tier

(I've got the same set)

I got these at PAX last weekend. The d8 broke in my second game. The company is already sending me a replacement.

They're fun to roll and seem to be all over the place.

My girlfriend works for Wyrmwood. Everything they make is amazing bit expensive.

I would have, but the fact that the book D2 is only available to Patreon backers triggers my autism.

they sell them at conventions too

Nice - I was there too. That's where I got There was one dice seller there with anodized metal dice - for $120 a set. I wasn't impressed. I got the platinum set for myself for $30, and this set from metallicdicegames.com for $35 for a friend.

there was someone there selling $500/set dice. The d20 was $85 by itself. It's absurd.

Yeah, that's just retarded. Were they in the main vendor area? (Rather than over by board gaming.) I saw some nice stone / resin composite dice that I almost pulled the trigger on, but again they were in the $35 - $45 dollar range.

Mammoth ivory dice

>useless or inferior for stated purpose
>good craftsmanship
kek

Who besides artisan dice makes those? And artisan have so many horror stories about their business practices that they're basically off the menu.

Yeah, those were the folks with the most retarded pricing. They were in the main vendor area near the back wall / stairs leading to the 2nd floor at South. Paying $300 - $500 for dice that 'look nice' is like paying $100K for a VW kit car 'that looks like a Ferrari'.
