When does your party realize it's not all about the reward?

When does your party realize it's not all about the reward?

Right before they turn in their character sheets and walk out the door as the DM rolls hard into page 3/23 of the barmaid's backstory

My group's Fighter (is also the elected "Leader") returned the monetary reward for the slaying of a basilisk to the wife of the man they saved. Just handed it right back. Which was really surprising because he has been a gold-hunter since the very beginning.

This cast was so likeable, the fact that girls were hot was just icing. The Latina a QT

French moleman and granny comms were pretty great

he didn't specify what kind of gold he was truly after

It's OK. We can be paid in other ways other than money...

I really like explosivo italiano

we dont wanna know about the section on backstory on the molemans sheet

They were ALL amazing
>We’re all gonna die
>Uncomfortable French sexual dogging noises
>I could-a blow it up if I had-a more explosives.

From the very start - it's all about purging evil, man.
Atlantis was fucking great, Vinny a 10/10

...

The reward is seeing the mission completed.
The reward is saving innocent lives.
The reward is doing your duty to your country.
The reward is medals.

NEVER

In that small moment where they transition from protagonists to heroes.

Once shit gets personal and the party has some reason to fight beyond just the reward.

Generally, that's when the BBEG actually targets them personally.

Never, because that one guy in his 50s can't wrap his head around the idea of plot and roleplay being important in a tabletop rpg.

The reward is honour and glory in death soldier. We've got a war to win.

I want to roll hard into the barmaid's backstory

If you know what I mean

When they joined the Guardians of the Veil.

They are holy Martyrs. They sacrifice their happiness, their Wisdom, their very lives for the promise of a brighter tomorrow they will never see, and which may never arrive.

...

Yeah, I really like stargate too

My friend is planning a D20 Modern campaign and I am basing my robot off him. It used to run a flower shop, but a terrorist wanted to allahu snackbar the area and reprogrammed him, but got arrested before he was done. Now my bot loves 'splosions
