Wouldn't make more sense to see liches dressing in Roman/Egyptian/Babylonian clothes, showing them to be ancient, than just plain ragged robes?

Sure, if the ancient cultures in your setting were inspired by those

well ancient liches are just floating skulls with jewels for eyes, so it'd basically just a skull with a roman helmet or some funky babylon whig,

Unless they attached a fake skeleton that was wired together and just hung underneath them so they could dress it up and place clothes on it.

If we’re discussing 5e, what you described was a demilich. I’m sure though that there has to be a cutoff point of “thousands of years” old with a body, to being insane, astral traveler who just needs to eat one soul.

Babylonian ones would be Akaliches.

if everything else has worn away wouldn't the helmet have?

why wouldn't a lich keep up with the fashion of his present day?

The question is why WOULD they? Thousands of years old, very smart, VERY powerful, and also quite possibly just as insane. Non-lich people right now already have enough reasons to not keep up with today's fashion, so why would they [liches]?

they seclude themselves away from people on purpose so they can keep studying
no liches give a fuck about mortal races, it's like getting involved with an ant hill somewhere

in that case wouldn't the lich be naked or wear something skintight for absolute minimum interference of his scholarly work, so no robes getting caught on a candle and burning down his books etc etc

when they eventually stop caring about it / are too poor to have magical ones, probably.

Plain robes are more ancient than any of those cultures, let alone clothes.
Now, if I was a lich, I'd dress like an eyesore, but that's just me.

I think Lichs going John Carter would make most sense, the only thing thet wear are magical amulets and jewelery.

Think about old people.

They don't give a fuck.

They'll wear a decades old sweater, sweatpants, and a pair of slippers because it's warm and comfy.

Now consider a being immune to cold and so ancient they've transcended the concept of ever having given a fuck. I'm amazed liches wear anything at all.

Wear and tear on clothing, moths in wardrobe, etc.
Unless they've included weavers, tailors/seamstresses, valets, etc., in their undead retinue they will eventually run out of minions to maintain/repair/create their original styles of clothing, so it's simply easier to go with basic hooded robes that even a skeleton can sew together from purchased or looted cloth.

>Akaliches are the same height they were in life
Even after an eternity, manlets will never learn

Let's inverse that. The lich actually keep its wardrobe to date, always dressed in the lastest fashion.
> He didn't kidnapped the princess, only her fashion designer.
> He prey on caravan along the Silk Road.
> Not mad because adventurers tried to kill him, but because they stained his coat.
> The treasure room is actually one hell of a dressing room.

I don't understand why liches dress in old clothes and are skeletal to begin with. You'd think with all that magic, they'd cast a glamor or perhaps reconstitute their body magically.

Liches only care about raw power.

You always make sure your equipment is in tip top condition or you replace it from the logisticum, who you've obviously enzombied and kept around in your liche garrison.

Fashion undead are my favorite things.

>Liches in tailored suits, with silk ties and cufflinks that are actually incredibly potent amulets and charms.
>Vampires dress like gangsters, neonates going for garish and statement-making garb while elders dress with quiet dignity and perfect tailoring.
>Ghouls wear tracksuits and slav squat on tombstones.

Because that would require the writer to put more than 5 seconds of thought into the idea before moving onto the next "epic" thing that they want to jam into their already incoherent setting.

Do you still wear clothes from the 90's?

What would clothing realistically tailored to a completely skeletal body look like?

I'd think probably kind of like a Zoot Suit. Tailored to hide the lack of waist and organs by being high cut, with enough drape to suggest the presence of flesh that isn't there. Suspenders keep the pants up since there's nothing to hold them there, and with a nice shirt and a tie to conceal the lack of chest via layers, it gives the suggestion that the skeleton isn't a skeleton, at least from far away. Plus, kick ass music.

That's a fantastic idea. I love well-dressed skeletons but have a hard time picturing things they could actually wear that wouldn't look weird.

Skeletons are badass

The skeleton is the apex of humanoid design, aesthetically. It's the best version of your body you could achieve.

Yes.
I've got band tour Tshirts older than some of the I socialise with!

If all their clothes weren't magic as fuck they probably wouldn't.

*people I socialise with...

The probably wear it for pockets honestly. Lich Robes are probably filled with dozens of little pockets to keep all their shit.

Lich in the OP pic did that when necessary.

And I am now reminded that Conan the Adventurer had an episode in which Conn stole the jewelry of a legendarily vain lich-queen, whose apparel is made clear would have been very much NOT G-Rated if she, y'know, wasn't a bag of bones.

>Mummies aren't in on the fashion scene - they're the ones who still care about the civilizations they were born in, and updating their styles would mean accepting that their kingdoms are truly and finally dead.
>Ghost fashionistas train for years to shape their ectoplasm JUST right to form the trendiest designs.

Sounds fun, do you can link me to it?

This is the only copy I've been able to find online, don't know if it'll work for you.

I'm not imagining skeletons in zoot suits acting like 1920s mobsters, lead by a lich crime boss, with mandatory swing music playing in the background.
I had no idea how much I needed this.

>The party needs to find the mob for help on something the law can't handle.
>They've gotta go down into the underground until they find an undead speakeasy.
>Inside, a group of skeletons in zoot suits are chatting up a vampiress in a flapper dress at the bar.
>On the stage a bad plays an upbeat tune. A troupe of skeletons in tuxedoes on horns, a ghoul on the drums, and a mohrg in a candy-blue suit crooning into the microphone.
>A mummy behind the bar in a bartender's vest points the party to who they're here for.
>In the corner of the room in a curving boot table, a lich sits with an elder vampiress on one arm and a beautifully crafted flesh golem on the other, both in scandalously cut dresses. He's dressed in a fine pinstripe suit and his golden cufflinks and tie pin glisten with faint magic when the light hits them. A wide brimmed hat is tipped down on his head, a jet black peacock feather curving back jauntily from the brim. His wingtip shoes are propped up on the table, and with a snap of his fingers a skeleton arrives to hand him a martini.
>He tips up the brim of his hat as the party approaches, surveying them with casual curiosity.
>"So" he says "What are you doing in my neck of the woods, hmm?"

Oh, and for appropriate sound.

This is everything I ever wanted.

They DO use illusions and polymorph spells. It's just that they don't give a fuck, so they only do that when they have an actual reason to disguise themselves.

...

Ancient clothing was very similiar to medieval clothing (at least for commoners) with the only exeption of pants being more widespread during medieval times... But desu, i would love a greek lich dressing in rags and living in a barrel.

Modern people have no idea how different clothing were back then. They were incredibly expensive and often just plain weird compared to today ensembles.

Jesus that title font

Yeah. Who the hell thought trying to hybridize both all caps and all lowercase would look good?

>A vampiress in a flapper dress at the bar
>An elder Vampiress on one arm and a beautifully crafted flesh golem on the other, both in scandalously cut dresses
Dammit, I failed my save vs. acquiring a new fetish.

>why do they have to be so skinny
i exhaled a few times

Damn, I never knew how much I'd want to see a dieselpunk fantasy setting. Think Arcanum but in the 1920s equivalent setting instead of Victorian era.
I've even got the perfect name for it: Gilded Age (the term sometimes used to refer to the early 20th century, before the great depression).

>defeat a lich
>holy shit he's got so much shit in his pocke-
>it's all knick knacks and other dumb shit
>including a pair of glasses, some loose change, hard candies, spare dentures, three TV remotes, handkerchiefs galore, wallets filled with nothing but photos

Hell yeah. 1920's fantasy is something that needs to happen a whole lot more.

Welp, i know what I want to run next game.

Depend. Are your setting a copy of our world but with magic? If yes, then your idea may have some sense in it.

Either way, I don't think many liches care about fashion.

What else is there that a Roaring 20's fantasy setting needs?
>Not only is alcohol on prohibition, so is arcane magic. Wizards hide out in speakeasies, dodging raids by cleric-powered police while Warlocks traffic with otherworldly powers to try and break through the prohibitionist wards.
>Bank robberies are the stuff of folk heroism, names like Dillinger (a charismatic elf with a pencil moustache and a knack for big heists) or Bonnie and Clyde (a pair of criminal lovers, one secretly a renegade flesh golem) commonly uttered around the house.
>Radio and newspapers are big names of the scale of political power and criminal pressure. They're in the know, and for the right price you could be too.
>After the influx of bank robbers and public enemies, large enough banks seek out dragons to guard their vaults.

Yeah that'd be pretty cool

>1920's (unmasqued) urban fantasy setting
>One of your players hands you his character sheet with this guy as the character portrait
>Allow him to play?

>Dillinger (a charismatic elf with a pencil moustache and a knack for big heists) or Bonnie and Clyde (a pair of criminal lovers, one secretly a renegade flesh golem)

This is one of my favorite things with urban fantasy; who in an alternate history may no long be human, or perhaps have fantastic (or more fantastic) skills.

Can you imagine the boxer rebellion and how much of a bigger deal it would be if the British Army had to fight fuckloads of level 5-20 monks? (running on 5e logic, these monks would be faster than average, be able to deflect missiles, their fists count as magical weapons, and so on)

>Allow him to play?

Yes, as long as the rest of the sheet isn't a direct copy of that character. Just because it's a fairly popular recent movie doesn't negate the fact that it's good character art for that setting.
