So let's hear about your routine for game days/nights and meetups /bgg/. Public location or someone's home? Snacks or do you go all out with full meals and special menus? Dry event or are you making sure everyone's well oiled so that when things get stabby the blade is likely to miss anything vital?

I was never on /bgg/ during summoner wars posting, how bad was it back then?

There was a week or two I remember someone suggesting it no matter what genre user asked for suggestions on; but mostly it just had a fair few fans and then others who liked to shit on them. Much like Kemet now but no one's suggesting Kemet for worker placement, or abstract, or deckbuilding options.

Well then if any of old summoner wars anons are lurking around today, I want to ask you if it's any good? Or if it's just one of those games that was hyped as the best thing ever, but it has no staying power.

>Routine
I've been hosting game nights, rp nights, media nights, and book clubs for most of my adult life.
>Snacks vs meals
Always meals. I used to make meals for the group like lasagna or tacos or other easy ground beef things, but when i lost my job a few years back we switched to order in and everyone pitched in except me since i was hosting.
>Dry
always dry. We tried having alcohol for the games but that never went well. Wine and beer was good with media nights though.

It's not too bad, plenty of replayable ty though a gratuitous number of expansions. The worst that can be said is that it's a swingy dice game with little to no mitigation elements, but that's hardly a unique sin unique among light skirmish games, and the people who like them aren't usually bothered by such.

OP! That's a horrible picture to use for a board game general. And I should know, I made it!

>So let's hear about your routine for game days/nights and meetups /bgg/.

A friend always hosts at her place. We either all pitch in to buy pizza or subs, etc. Or we all pitch in and make something - last event was Spaghetti plus Garlic Bread, and I brought a green-bean casserole. We also bring snacks and the adults bring booze. But no one gets hammered (though the host has gotten pretty spaced out on allergy meds once or twice). And it's a good thing no one gets all stabby since 'Greg' seems to always assassinate either his Mom or his Fiance whenever we play Citadels.

>how bad was it back then?

Not as bad as the Shit-Scythe-Storm of aught 16 I rekkin'.

I'm on pain meds after an emergency root canal, just picked one randomly because I had the topic in my head but not an image for it; should've used the Village edition futaba

It's OK OP. I just thought it was an 'unusual' choice for a thread starter, but with this group maybe not so much. Hope you feel better soon, dental surgery sucks.

strange lookin cat you posted

better than trane shit meem back to back

you muh hero anyway

>you muh hero anyway
You only say that because you don't know who I am

nah I love you like a brother you lazy asshat

>Your waifu doesn't exist
Just because something is true doesn't mean you have to point it out.

>putting house on the market
>hire top local realtor
>very impressed
>talking about list price and working together
>cereal beans
>he pulls out his 80 point checklist for real estate
>he has spent 35 years in real estate developing his personal system
>look at the paper he's holding
>it's in fucking comic sans

this guy literally sucks down millions in commissions, runs the biggest and most successful brokerage, brags about how he tripled his main assistant's salary to snatch her away, is in a serious conversation about listing my house and pulls out a checklist built of comic sans.

I could only think of u /bgg/

...

If you had to hug one of the four main Dice Tower guys, meaning Tom, Zee, Sam, or Eric, who would you pick?

We're talking like a big ole, you're my best friend in the world and I haven't seen you in a year, strangers might think we're lovers hug.

He's not wrong. Do you tell random strangers you don't like their haircuts? If so, you might be an asshole.

Similar principle applies here.

Zee. No question.

whoever this one is
I don't watch dice tower
but I bet he smells like Century Spice Road

It's like you want me to point out the obvious. No stop user don't point out the obvious.

Not my work...

That was definitely NOT me... (Though it was my typo that brought about the 'Cow-worker' images. Doh!)

Just for you user, pic related...

...

>I bet he smells like Century Spice Road

KEK! Poor Zee Garcia. Now people are going to randomly walk up to him at Cons and start sniffing him and he'll be going "WTF is wrong with these people?!?" and have no idea why it's happening...

>could only thing of /bgg/
Further proof it's good for knowledge retention; almost motivates me enough to look through the archives for contributions anons were making on the next steps chart.

Every time I feel like /bgg/ has gotten a little too aggressive in the shitposting, and there's not enough fun and talk on games, you suck me back in with this kinda stuff.

Oh you're not going to like tomorrow at all when the editing starts

I own two copies of Sons of Anarchy

That's Zee Garcia. He's the most likeable one but also can't play games that are more than thirty minutes long unless they have the word "Pandemic" in the title.

The middle is Tom Vasel. He often wears a fedora.

The one on the right is Sam "The Puncher of Throats" Healey. It's believed that a cartel is holding his family hostage and threatens to hurt them if he doesn't mention his youth group as often as possible so that the world will know Christians are allowed to like board games.

By their powers combined, they can produce Jason Levine, who is the most awkward human being to ever exist, but can also kick your ass. At board games, I mean.

And then there's Eric Summerer, who is an IRL Mary Sue in that he's actually better than everyone else in the world.

I own two copies of 'OGRE Designer Edition' - 28lbs each. I use them as part of my workout routine.

> Do you even lift Bro?

I'd tell you to sell one on the secondary market but GF9 clearly fucked up the print order on it the way it's always on clearance. Use the cash as replacement for coins in other board games that have ugly chits?

yeah that's how I wound up with two. It was almost free over buying an expansion.

>tfw you only wanted 5 player SoA and now have 12 player SoA

Great! Now you have to start your own 'Motor Cycle Club' in order to have enough players.

I'm finishing up graduate school and I finally have my shit together, my mental health is on a serious positive trajectory, and things are going well. Consequently, I think I might start dating again after a few years of being single.

Is it possible to meet women through board gaming?

You'll have better luck in some kind of nerd-adjacent physical activity.

Sam "dude on a map" Haeley of course

>nerd-adjacent physical activity
user, the fucking comes later.

Seriously, though, I genuinely don't know what you mean. Like those Harry Potter fans who decided Quidditch should be a real sport?

Or do you mean like how when I was an undergrad there was a group at my college who performed Rennaissance-era dance?

It's not impossible.

You'd have to do it correctly, of course. Find a local gaming cafe or something, associate with people there, get into games, and find a single nerd girl who's been going to those sorts of events as well.

That you, Rice?

You can meet women anywhere user, the question is can you hold onto your spaghetti? It is not anywhere near your best option though likely

>that spoiler
I don't know who that is, so probably not.
>the question is can you hold onto your spaghetti?
Yeah. Apparently I'm actually pretty charming or some shit. I don't tend to panic and ruin everything until months into the relationship.

Hell yes. I met the love of my life at board game group. Pretty sure her bf finally proposed to her on Wednesday and they missed Thursday to tell their family.

>I don't know who that is.
I thought not after your other post, as our college didn't have a group that performed Renaissance-era dance.

I just have a friend who shares most of the same current life-states as you:
- finishing up grad school
-mental health stabilizing
-single for some time

It wouldn't be the first time I met a friend on Veeky Forums by accident: I popped into a MST3k stream from the site like, 8 years ago and ran into a guy I hadn't seen for...probably around 7 years at the time.

But yeah, overall, as I said: not impossible. You'll note the lack of true positivity in that summation.

If you're gonna pretend to be retarded at least put some effort into it.

Is it opposite day ?

Thread was about to end

What are some games set in the apocalypse?

tanto cuore

A bleak dark time where a lone man struggles against the virtuous fires of temptation to quench the one flame that burns within his heart, accompanied by a heroic host of angles the hero nay YOU must save the future with a harem of cute maids doing cute things.

I've met one woman via the hobby. I don't particularly like her, and she's married, but we've met and interacted so that still technically counts.

You missed one...

What? Why?

My three regular meetups are all different, food-wise. One is in a bar that has a few things on the menu I like, so I'll order one of those (it was three things, but they took pizza off the menu for some reason). Another is held at a local food bank, so I just get pizza from the takeaway across the road and eat it there - I might bring some snacks, but usually I just bring still drinks every now and then. The fortnightly one serves food, but there's nothing I like so I just get something before I actually go there; there's some really nice restaurants at a nearby train station - I had a nice savoury crepe on Tuesday.

>Public location or someone's home?
Library. Closes at 9. Got pissed at club for not being cleaned up 15 minutes early because of 1 more round syndrome so it's even shorter. Ideally next house will have a game/D&D room.

>Food
I bring kids fruit snacks for blood sugar and lolipops for drymouth/throat from teaching. I almost passed out twice from dieting so I make sure to eat a small meal before but nothing but Xing tea during games.

As far as prep, the day before I stop eating questionable things, try to do mostly rice, chicken and things that won't trigger my allergies (getting dosed not only keeps me on the shitter constantly but makes me stoopid)

People do bring salads or some quick meal occasionally when work abuts game night too much. I'm not bothered by it even though I've got food allergies from hell. Basically they're respectful, I always mention it if they whip out pretzels or something, plus I'm less concerned since the effect will hit me the next day when I don't have mission critical gaming to accomplish (not that it doesn't still completely suck and destroy my entire day or more)

>Dry event
Board gaming is serious business for me. It's not just about bringing your A game, but it's my only fucking adult time EVER. When you shit on that by coming sauced I'm likely the one to get stabby. I don't drink and never have, and I don't care what you do in your own time but board game night is not your own time. It's actually been an issue for a few months in my group since the organizer is utterly spineless. I will fake an emergency call rather than play with drunk user again, and I've made sure he knows it.

51st state. I mean it's post apoc, but I'm guessing that's actually what you meant.

I think risk legacy has nukes or something. Not that that's an excuse to play risk.

I think Arctic Scavengers is in post-apoc as well, but I haven't opened it yet so I'm not sure.

Speaking of scythe, my local game store has had an extension on its shelf for awhile. I've looked into it a bit, and it looks pretty good, though expensive, yeah. Has anyone here played it some? How is it? I'm on the fence about it when they restock.

So this is only tertiarily /bgg/ but it's Veeky Forums and food so I'll share. This was before board games came into my life and I was looking for anything Veeky Forums instead of being discerning:

>join long running 3.5 game
>in guys basement
>during session guys wife always makes dinner
>all players expected to contribute $5+ and eat
>and by expected I mean the DM straight up just told us how it be like
>wife is part of the game too
>bitch could straight up not cook at all
>shitty bland food, no spice basically dump n heat shit
>cost more than takeout
>dude literally kept track of the dosh for "meals and drinks"

I endured that for about six weeks just to have some Veeky Forums in my life. Fucking pathetic.

I'd say this is why we need Home Ec back in schools, so people don't reach that stage without basic life skills like fucking cooking food to an acceptable standard, but it's probable that both the dude and his wife were raised by losers who couldn't cook a decent meal and so they just sort of assume that flavorless dump-and-heat bullshit is the height of home cuisine. I've known people like that, who think that throwing a boneless, skinless chicken breast in the oven for the right time to make it done and microwaving some flavorless frozen veggies is an acceptable, even good meal.

My entire family was in food service -- chefs, caterers, and so forth, so I know my way around a kitchen and a spice rack alike to show them the error of their ways.

(It's also possible that it could be a matter of salving the wife's ego, which is why I wouldn't try to butt in and take over one game night to show them up were I in your shoes. I'd probably take to eating before arrival, nibbling lightly at the offered fare, and sucking up the 5 buck cover because it's just five bucks)

Unfortunately there are still plenty of folks who are just to lazy to cook, and to spend the time and effort to learn to do it well.

I think it’s a must have. The regular map is to small. You need the extender to play on the bigger sized map.

>WizKids and Wizards of the Coast have announced expansion plans for a Magic: The Gathering product partnership. The new products are expected to include a line of Magic: The Gathering miniatures as well as a forthcoming board game. Wizards of the Coast and Wizkids had already worked on a line of products together based in the Dungeons & Dragons universe.

>“We’re introducing a long-time, beloved brand to an all new medium,” said Justin Ziran, president of WizKids. “Producing high-quality miniatures and bringing to market captivating board games is at the heart of WizKids. We could not be more excited to extend our relationship with Wizards of the Coast with Magic: The Gathering.”

>The initial product line will include pre-painted sculpted miniatures that will focus on token creature cards. Players enjoying the Magic: The Gathering card game will now be able to bring 3-d sculpts of their favorite figures to the table with them. Prepare to be intimidated!

>The board game will pull content from the original universe of the trading card game. Players will take on the role of Planeswalkers as they explore Dominaria and try to establish connections to mana sources. Planeswalkers will have to act fast in gathering power before their opponents while building a hand full of spell cards.

What are some games that are good for normies and can be played in an hour or two? I recently moved to France and all I have with me are the French version of Small World, Splendor, and Castles of Burgundy.

Does anyone else passionately hate Puerto Rico?

I played Downforce with my sister and her boyfriend today.

Came in third in the race but kicked their asses in final score.

I picked up Les Montagnes Hallucinées earlier today. It's light on rules and reading but still pretty fun without going for too long. For short games, I'd put forward Maskerade, Avalon, Shadow Hunters, Not Alone, Saboteur, Gosu, Summoner Wars, Bang... For slightly longer, Room 25, Catan, Outlive, 7 Wonders, Abyss are all games I've played semi-recently.

This shit right here? This needs to fucking stop. Broke out caylus for the first time in a decade since I bought it. I couldn't remember why I both loved and hated the game and as I'm separating the pieces it comes back to me.

Designers who pick colors like this are monsters. Colorblind people like me are just 100% fucked trying to play this game.

It should be spelt B-O-R-E-D

haven't played

what's your beef?

take the sharpie out of your ass and have your gay lover put a dot in each gray cube face.

or you can buy some broper colors from meeple source to suit your retardation

seriously tho that's really fucking awful

>Colorblind people

Are you completely color blind, or only Red / Green color blind for example?

Proto-something colorblind. A version of red-green.

I will never forgive Twilight Struggle for making Willy Brandt a card beneficial to the communists. Rudimentary research on the man was apparently too much to ask.

Can you link the original artwork uncropped?

Tom Vasel has gotten more charismatic and funny in the past year or so. Not like Zee level, but I'm enjoying his more recent reviews and so on much more.

...

He shit on Kennedy and tried to be friendly with the soviet bloc; that would make him an event more towards the red than blue

Ah. Figured that was cropped from something larger. Guess not.

protoanamoly or prototanopia

are you sure the colorblind simulator seems like dueternopia is the only color blindness that would struggle with your picture

>I'm trying to figure out which color to mark the shit out of in Century: Spice Road. What does this look like to you? Specifically the cubes and the bottom card row cubes?

That's a pain in the butt with so many things (including board games) routinely being color coded. Hopefully you can snag something from Meeple source as the other user suggested, or have a friend help sort them and put markings on them. But I get that it's still a chore to have to do that with lots of games.

Yeah, that was the original image I used. Sorry it wasn't what you were looking for.

>protoanamoly or prototanopia
>or dueternopia

Dayum! You learn some of the most interesting stuff on Veeky Forums.

The man was a socialist with a hard fucking line drawn in front of communism. The introductory paragraphs of his fucking wiki page end with "Brandt was also known for his fierce anti-communist policies at the domestic level, culminating in the Radikalenerlass (Anti-Radical Decree) in 1972." for Christ's sake. The only guy who drew a harder line was Helmut Schmidt when he went so hard the RAF comitted suicide in prison when faced with his actions.

He also pissed off all the conservatives who were driven out of the east by Stalinists by conceding to Poland/Czech, and bitched in public about the Berlin Wall being built saying it was America's fault

I picked up some meeple source octagons for Alien Frontiers downgrade. Pic related is them with Century Spice Road Cubes (Green Green)

you'd a got banned if you posted what he was looking for

>bitched in public about the Berlin Wall being built saying it was America's fault
Because drawing the battle lines between the American-controlled west and Soviet-controlled east in the cold war right through Berlin totally wasn't Americas fault.

>you'd a got banned if you posted what he was looking for
A link is fine.

Sounds to me like you're a soviet event card user

Maybe I am, because I think Twilight Struggle exposes in the most hilarious way how the space race was won through goalpost moving until the thing the US got to first was the one that mattered, despite what came before and after on the track.

Prototanopia is the one. I get color difference based on intensity of color around red greens. So in sunlight things look different than indoor light.

Surprisingly I have no trouble differentiating between those colors. Now admittedly they do look like yellow orange green and green, but their shades are very different.

Playing more than a few onto that track is a bad idea anyhow, but the idea that you beat the socialists by keeping the goal post ahead and proving they can't keep up economically is pretty accurate to history.

How fast could a typical person hypothetically read twilight imperium?

The rules that is.

The space station is past the moon landing though, and the Russians did that with Mir, which they maintained for a long ass time, too.

>meet some people at FLGS
>we play a few games
>one of them invites me to play games with him and some friends
>it goes well and I go a few more times
>another new person is invited
>mentions he likes Lovecraft
>I say, "Oh. I take it you've played Arkham Horror?"
>he says he strongly prefers Euros
>I jokingly say, "Huh, I didn't know you were gay."
>he gets pissed and calls me a homophobe
>I say I was kidding and that I'm bi
>he says he doesn't believe me and that I'm just a straight person trying to get away with being a bigot
>I'm rapidly going from bewildered to angry, and I say, "I will literally suck your dick if it'll make you shut the fuck up."
>one of the people there is actually gay and smooths things over by saying he thought it was funny

>forgetting Skylab launched in 1973
That's okay, we all forget it from time to time

You know what's funny? That picture looks like a color scheme that's been totally fucked up in order to appease the colorblind.

cards next

>never taken pics of this before figured I'd just continue

I'd say reading the learn to play booklet would take around 15 minutes. Wish I could convince the specials I have to play with sometimes to read the thing, because they won't listen to my reasoning consisting of: "listen, this game is long and involved, it would REALLY benefit BOTH of us if you knew how to play the gane from the very start"

Barony for life.
