Why the japanese think Ogres and Oni are the exact same creature when each of them belongs to totally distinct mythologies from different places and time periods?

Elaborate

it was D&D that introduced oni as "ogre mages". i don't know why you think the japanese were involved.

just imagine if someone said Yamata no Orochi and the Hydra are the same creature just because they look alike

Why no you is speak gud anglish

Why do Westerners think trolls and ogres are the exact same creature when each of them belongs to totally distinct mythologies from different places and time periods?

because they look the same, who gives a fuck?

Maybe not the same character but what would be the problem of calling them the same creature? As in the same species?

Because they fill roughly equivalent roles in their respective stories, faggot.

Because they look and act the same in folklore.

japanese goblin

>he doesn't use tengu

aren't Tengus japanese jews?

because in manga they always call it an ogre while making it more oni-like

>he doesn't use Kappa

Why do whites think Dragons and Lung the same thing?

Who thinks this?

Trolls are Norse monsters derived ultimately from Jotunn

Ogres are just generic storybook monsters that nobody ever really believed in

Because who gives a fuck. Literally nobody ever uses the noodly dragons anyways. It's all about the western kind.

Sauce?

Having actually read Supplement II: Greyhawk, I would like to point out that while it does refer to them as Ogre Mages they were introduced as Japanese Ogres.

Ogres (and similar concepts in other PIE-descendant langauges) are _very_ loose because they are very old concepts.
Oni is a very specific term because the ethnic group it's loosely distorted from was stamped out (relatively) recently.

Elf can't on a diet or something like that
Best girl Oga doesn't get enough screen time if you ask me

Because there is no adequate translation for what oni are or should be, but some people want to localize anyway. Oni are oni. They are not demons nor ogres, but a race of bloodthirsty, brutal-but-cunning, magical beast-like monster-men.

There's a reason for that. Chinese dragons are not villainous or monstrous. They are representations of nature, and thus they are meant to be respected and acknowledged, not defied or challenged.
Western dragons exist only to be slain. Which makes for good stories!

Western dragons exist to externalize internal struggles, much like many villainous monsters in mythology. They hoarded wealth, virgins, and power, things they had no use for, and the hero had to defeat the dragon in order to attain these things for himself. Essentially, dragons are externalized creatures meant to represent that which is evil in ourselves and the struggle to defeat them so that we might become better people.

Chinese dragons are actually much the same, except Eastern philosophy dictates acceptance of our inner selves, where that which is evil about us is actually worn on our faces and by touching upon our balanced, wise, internal nature, we can learn to master it. It's the inverted mirror to the Western dragon's lens.

In a way, they're very different. And in a way, they're also at the same time the same. Two sides of the same coin, two ways to interpret internal/external strife in the struggle to become our better selves.

Did you pull that out of your ass? Chinese dragons were celestial beasts who served the gods or were gods themselves

>Oni is a very specific term because the ethnic group it's loosely distorted from was stamped out (relatively) recently.

Please elaborate? Do you mean the Ainu because they kinda still exist.

>race: Oger
>name: Oga
That's my oga!

>There's a reason for that. Chinese dragons are not villainous or monstrous.
Monster Hunter disagrees.

You fight everything in monster hunter because you hunt monsters. Nothing is actually good or bad, just nature in or out of the control of men. Look at shit like Kirin; it just ignores you if you never mess with it but causes thunderstorms by just existing. The destructive quality of eastern dragons is just the nature of their power, not actual malicious intent.

Oga makes me almost forgive this manga for it's chubby elf fetish shit. Almost.

Better question: How do you differentiate between oni and ogre in your setting if at all?

Wasn't one of the Dragon kings evil though? The one who blackmailed people and hoarded riches and power and was beaten back (by wukong i think)?

What i'm asking i guess is, aren't chinese dragons more diverse with some being benevolent and some being malignant?

horns are obligatory for Oni but not for Ogres, I think

That is the correct answer. OP is an idiot.

They have the nose, but Tanuki(the racoon-dog people) are the ones who fit the stereotype more. By being merchants who will manipulate you in order to get the most profit.

Elf-san wa Yaserarenai.
Oga is Best Girl.

onis are red or blue and have horns, ogres are flesh-colored and look like very ugly humans

Ogres are more into eating onions than human flesh

people mistaking dragons with wyverns is worse

Oni are demons and should't be on earth at all. They're sapient, sentient and intelligent.

Ogres are mundane creatures, as strong as any oni but retarded.

Maybe the Jōmon?

>Oni
>Demons
Confirmed for having no idea what the fuck you're talking about.

Demon is a common translation, but 'spirit' would be closer. Oni, Kitsune, Bakemono, etc, are all natural parts of the world. But they are distinctly non human.

We aren't talking about that kind of oni pretty fucking obviously. We're talking about the Buddhist influenced oni.

In Agone, it is primarily bassed off of greek mythology with some small inspiration from norse and even a little celtic mythology. Oni do not really exist, unless they were to be some kind of demonic creature, or a creature infused with Darkness from the Abyss. Ogres are very civilized, human looking creatures (just slightly bigger, stronger and sturdier) that fight and command mercenary organizations, and who use a fighting style that relies on dazzling their opponent with their bright shiny armor, shields, and war torches, as they cannot be blinded by bright lights, and increase in strength under the light of the noon sun.

Ogres are what sometimes happens when you cross an orc and a giant. They're like ligers in that they keep growing to crippling size. This gives them an insatiable hunger and a short life expectancy.

Oni are a mix of orcs and the setting's tiefling equivalent. They're born with the red skin, horns and sometimes a third eye. The last bit resemblesniether parent, but does resemble a villainous deity from ancient orcish myth, so some see it as an omen of his rebirth.

Western dragons are monsters while Chinese dragons are deities, it's not rocket science

Oh, ogres.

>Why the japanese think
they don't, that's whichever fansub you downloaded's fault

Translations issues most likely.

Japan calls them demons too. Demons in the West are purely religious critters in Hell, and ogres are a natural creature.

So it's basically how Christians turned Hades into a bad guy when being the lord of the dead was just the job he got assigned and not that he was damned to be said lord of the dead?

Ogres are large man-eating humanoids, Oni are evil spirits. However, Ogres get more Oni-looking the further east you go. This is due to divine politics.
