I never got the impression that Connie was some sort of mary sue character. Her primary function in the story is that she is Steven's only actual human friend, and an actual peer he can attempt to navigate his humanity with who is not his dad. All the townies he deals with are older than him by enough that while he can emotionally help them, he's not their same age and that makes a big difference.

Anyway, most of the episodes that focus on her and Steven are about both of them growing as people and navigating adolescence, which is a good topic for a show that deals with emotional problems and changes, I think.
