In the future of space, planets can basically always make enough food, water, and basic supplies for their populations. Why would they go to war with each other anyway?

Clear orbits for more lasers and solar panels.

Planets are overrated.

Conflict over ideologies like religions or political systems? They may have no practical reason not to just fuck off to different planets and avoid interacting, but some factions may not be willing to allow even the existence of some or all opposing ideologies.

political dickwaving

Political ideologies.
Religious conflicts.
Diplomatic misunderstandings.
Boredom.

Pick your poison.

If the populations are human then they really don't need a reason to fight each other.

Entertainment. In a society with neurocognitive back-ups and uploading, casualties really aren't a problem. Two worlds could go to war and conduct a series of set piece battles purely for the fun of it.

This is usually the case for modern and historical nations also. You don't go to war because you need food and they've got food, you go to war because you want more food-producing stuff, more glory, fancy loot, or just to stick it to those pompous assholes.

Not everyone likes the status quo and not everyone is satisfied with "good enough."

Because plants are picky and we need more nitrogen and phosphorous.

I really like this idea. Like that one movie where the people control condemned prisoners in gladiator fights, without the retarded plotholes and "I DIDN'T ASK FOR THIS!!!1!1!111!!"

Because those heathens put their forks on the right-hand side of their dinner plates, and our most holy space-pope has declared that to be the ultimate sin, for which they will all burn in space-hell. And now to show how faithful we are, we must go send them there ourselves.

Isn't that backwards?

Ye ancyent times: people slave for money n cubicles to survive all day long, no time for war.
The promised Avalon to come: free money and food for all, freeing them to seek destiny in bloody glory

The most popular virtual reality created to date is literally called "World of Warcraft". The idea that that a civilization of functionally immortal humans wouldn't go to war just for the fun of it is deeply implausible.

Resource hoarding, dismantling the stars and planets, storing in massive megastructures on top of the horizon of supermassive black holes, in preparation for the black hole era of the universe when the last star has been extinguished hoping to last as much as possible and figure out a way to beat thermodynamics.

Are these methods of doing it infinite and never require repair or anyone to maintain and put in any sort of source stock? Then you need resources.

Can they only do this for a certain amount of people and that threshold is being exceeded? Need more space

Someone else wants their people to be happy and content as yours and doesn't care what happens to you and wants to share? You have to defend it.

Seriously what kind of stupid fucking question is this?

Resources may be sitting around out there, but needs for energy, labor and logistics won't go away.
Just because there exists a piece of land it isn't magically feeding you right now. You still have to build and maintain and costs are always going to differ. Nothing but scale and individual prices have changed.

Who is the boss ?

Skub

the ruling class of the planets horde the wealth for themselves and start wars as a means of distracting the subjugated classes.

a super original concept, i know.

Nah man, sending out expeditions on that kind of timescale just means seeding the galaxy with rival civilizations. Better to just grab the few stars close to you and enjoy the billions of years you've got.

taking slaves.

this

>wars are only fought for securing what's needed to merely survive
Oh sweetums, you have a lot to learn about war.

>Issac Arthur

If the setting has some crucial, fantastical element like FTLanium that's only found on a few planets, then there'll be a lot of competition for them.

Taking slaves
Killing heretics
Fearing that the other guy is planning to genocide you so you genocide him first

Because people are also resources

>Why would they go to war with each other anyway?

Some shit head opens his egg from the wrong end.

So long as man has desires, he will have the desire to war. So long as man has needs, he will have the need to war.
A man who has all he needs will soon desire, and a man who has all he desires will soon need.

From Gone With the Blastwave

Imagine yourself taking a stroll through Manhattan, somewhere north of 68th street, deep inside Central Park, late at night. It would be nice to meet someone friendly, but you know that the park is dangerous at night. That’s when the monsters come out. There’s always a strong undercurrent of drug dealings, muggings, and occasional homicides. It is not easy to distinguish the good guys from the bad guys. They dress alike, and the weapons are concealed. The only difference is intent, and you can’t read minds. Stay in the dark long enough and you may hear an occasional distance shriek or blunder across a body. How do you survive the night? The last thing you want to do is shout, “I’m here!” The next to last thing you want to do is reply to someone who shouts, “I’m a friend!” What you would like to do is find a policeman, or get out of the park. But you don’t want to make noise or move towards a light where you might be spotted, and it is difficult to find either a policeman or your way out without making yourself known. Your safest option is to hunker down and wait for daylight, then safely walk out. There are, of course, a few obvious differences between Central Park and the universe. There is no policeman. There is no way out. And the night never ends.
