As a huge FE fan since I started in 5ed, I couldn't agree more. I do love the big flashy heroes, the entire appeal of the sub-faction is hotblooded rebels in mecha, but shit they need some lore other than about eight individual rebels. The original supplement only describes four worlds and they're all totally inhospitable, where the fuck do they actually live? What's their population? Do they have access to the new tau FTL? Who are their political leaders?
It's a shame the tau empire actually has so little lore other than about the exploits of the warriors of t'au, and one or two other tidbits. I'm really hoping the new codex gives us more lore on the septs than a three line "this is their gimmick!", I essentially chose bork'an as my non-enclave colour scheme by random.

What are the, 597th Valhallan Ice Warriors, Elysian drop troops, Cadians, Tanith 1st and Only? I don't care for the gaurd, but they don't sure use more up to date tactics than trench warfare when it suits the situation.

Those are elite troops, and they certainly perform well with what they're given, but the problem is that the Imperium as a whole is too dysfunctional to properly support them. The Elysian drop troops can drop down and capture a key point, but without reliable support from the navy and good communication and support from other Guard, Admech, and Astartes units then they're gonna be decimated within a short time. The disfunction within the Imperium as a whole prevents these elite units from performing at their best.
