Your mom.

Orcs.

Goats and sheep

ponies

Giant mole rats

Bears

Dwarf horses... duh!

Elven bitches.

Ponies and goats for non combat roles.
Dire ram and armoured boar for cavalry.
Bear for the wealthiest elite cavalry.

Also bison.

Dwarves are small, but still quite heavy. So you would need the same horses or camels that humans use. At least for an armoured Dwarf. Ponies would also be fine for light cavalry.

Halflings and Gnomes on the other hand... They could reasonably ride smaller animals.

Depends on the role. I could see a breed of swole-ass pigs being used for military use, but for just general use I don't see why the traditionally underground race would even go about the process of domesticating a separate species of animal when they could just import already trained ponies and/or donkeys from Human lands.

Actually stubborn-ass asses would fit the stubborn-ass dwarves now that I think of it, at least for non-combat roles.

Boar. They're so good even the goblins steal them.

giant insects, probably ants. Their limited pheromone based instints would make them easy to train if you firgure out the science behind it. Seems lime something dwarves would do.

Giant Dire Honey Badgers with the taste for Elf flesh.

Would chariots be in use by dwarves?

If them being short is a problem so they can't mount horses, but domesticated horses being a best mount, wouldn't chariots be the logical middle ground?

ARMOURED GIANT BEATLES

Being short isn't a problem for horse riding, see- jockeys. The issue is horses need a lot of pasture and such, which underground cave cities typically lack (in addition to horses being unmaneuverable in tunnels)

I think most depiction of dwarves have really thick and stubby legs, not like jockeys who are lithe and skinny.

Dwarven giant-riding Cavalry Bards when?

Horses can carry fully plate-armored tall humans, surely they can carry dwarves as well.

Horses are strong as fuck, and this isn't even getting into horses bred for it like Clydesdales .

I was talking more about dwarven legs making past the saddle

this

That's a simple enough matter of making tack fit for dwarves instead of humans. They make saddles for children to learn to ride, and I think human kids are smaller than Dwarves.

Lizards, snakes, spiders, groundhogs. Not a lot of creatures are tunnel capable

Thats not what I meant but good suggestion regardless.

elves

Hulking rams.

rust monsters, with both rider and beast decked in stone armor and weapons

Alright you got me

Chariots aren't great on rough terrain - I could see chariots as a thing, maybe for field armies (the FW hobbit model helps), but I reckon they'd be along similar lines as war machines rather than more flexible cavalry

e

Rocks.
Big beautiful old rocks.

(You can call them a kind of domesticated Earth Elementals if you're not up to silliness.)

But don't bulettes crave dwarf meat?
