you can eat nothing but fast food and lose weight, conversely you can eat nothing but fruits and vegetables and gain weight. It's a matter of quantity, it's just that fast food is way more energy dense than regular fruits and vegetables so all other things being equal it's way more common to gain weight on a fast food diet.
I could eat a couple big macs every day and lose weight because my caloric maintenance is fairly high. 100% big mac diet probably not too healthy though even if I ended up pretty skinny.
