Your last clause describes the author, not the actual events of the drafted book, such as it is. The pro/antagonists get away with their crimes and go on living.

Of a party of 46 (which include the rarely-mentoned help), 16 "survive and come back" (to Paris). No mention is made of anyone ever getting a comeuppance for what they have done, or participated in.
