Memes never die.

That nigger's on Chipotle bags, the only thing he's best at is being a whining whore.

Gene Wolfe and Cormac McCarthy are still alive, so no.

Philip Roth much?

>corncob tortillas
kek

>Fr*nzen
>best living novelist
But of course the best living novelist is unknown to us, the author of work the publishers have passed on or haven't seen.

i cant bring myself to even give a shit enough to finish Purity. no he is not. not at all. corrections was cool, freedom was ok. i like tao lin but im not gonna make a hyperbolic statement

Toni Morrison aint dead yet bro

-checks if mccarthy is dead-

just no

tortilla no bueno

i hate that this is a meme now. i secretly hope you all die. this is one of the reasons i will never go to a Veeky Forums meetup

>i secretly hope you all die
it's not a secret if you tell us m8

no one would go to a Veeky Forums meetup, this aint reddit

>Hubert Selby Jr.
>Irving Welsh
>JM Coetzee
>Cormac Mcarthy
>Le Manhattan Mystery Man

Irvine Welsh you mean?

Yes, but if there is a person named Irving Welsh he's probably still better than Franzen.

I don't understand this meme?

Franzen is the Jeb Bush of literature

Someone's butthurt their slop wasn't published

>not Gass

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that I think you're right, /lit./

Nope, it's >7996689 rather something to ponder

>Cormac McCarthy

Why doesn't this board talk about him? He's great

This Twally Dinnae Ken Wit he Speaks.

>Caring about living novelists

I've only read Franzen's translation of the classic Frank Wedekind play Spring Awakening, and I suppose it was decent enough. However, he prefaces it with a massive misunderstanding about how modern society can take a story and adapt it to their own purposes, citing the broadway musical in a ridiculous rant that bears no purpose other than to display that he chose to translate the original play simply because he hated the musical. What he doesn't understand, however, was that it was a musical. Of fucking course it wasn't faithful to the original intent of the play, it was a fucking musical. I've never read any of his other stuff, but he made himself look like a dumbass even in the few pages of forward that I saw from him.

wasn't funny

who is manhattan mystery man?

What don't you like about Purity? I'm at the part where she meets Wolf for the first time, and so far it's been pretty good. It's like a literary page-turner. Good characters, good prose, but it is pretty long-winded in sections. The actual narrative is what keeps me going though.

The best living novelist is Michel Houellebecq

Because the contrarians are mad that he's popular

He's not even the best living novelist named Jonathan Franzen

we used to a fair bit

Philip Roth you dolts

as if he's even close to Pinecone or Gass. Even Delillo is better

Pynchon lives in Manhattan (shh that's a secret)

I think he's great. Sabbath's Theater is amazing

Underrated comment
