I don't think he's apathetic. I've read some bits of his actual sayings. I think he's incredibly deep person. I think to maintain that level on naivety for an adult is a requirement to be a genius, at the same time it's almost impossible to do when you grow up, as you have to fit into the complicated machinery of the society.

I also think that the people in the west are much more pragmatic and cannot understand him, mainly because their values are revolving much more around self-improvement in one way or another. When I was living in Eastern Europe, a post-Soviet country I could meet much more people who had wild, non-egoistic ideas and dreams. Then, when I moved westwards, I didn't meet anyone like this.

To be more clear, as opposed to the self-improvement of the west, the people of the Soviet Union were thought to think less about themselves (because there were systematic attempts to make everyone equal) and more to improve the society and the world.

I don't even think he wanted any credit for his proof, like most western taught people do, he just wanted to make the knowledge available for the people. And the fact that the society turned out to be so greedy made he absolutely disgusted by the thing he liked the most.
