There are none. It's all middlebrow.

Not that they are bad necessarily. But be realistic about what they are.

Watchmen is the obvious recc.
I'd say Zero by Ales Kot. Many philosophical undertones, political themes, and the art styles don't breach the level of verisimilitude in an attempt to convince you that the book is super radicool.

let me add:
Travel and Garden by Yuichi Yokoyama

Beautiful looking book but definitely what people like are talking about when they say middlebrow.

Watchmen is probably the most ambitioiusly structured cape book ever. I think it's genre holds it back though.

I haven't read Kot but everything I've heard about him makes him sound like a modern day Warren Ellis, and Ellis is a fucking hack. In general I'm suspicious of comics makers with no artistic background.

Kot's a pretentious fuck, I'm not even gonna lie, but Zero is great. He leans very very heavily on the talent of his artists.
Its 4 volumes and it doesn't get very didactic or pretentious until the middle of the fourth.
It also happens to be his only work that I really like.

From Hell by Moore is good as well.

Jimmy Corrigan is good and sorta similar to Watchmen.

literally tumblr-tier

The one you posted, of course
Maus
Persepolis
Barefoot Gen
Will Eisner's works
Distant Neighborhood (Jiro Taniguchi)
Corto Maltese (Hugo Pratt) and Sharaz-de (Sergio Toppi) (the art is incredible in these, but stories vary in quality)

Y: the last man

Swamp Thing
DMZ is not as good but still interesting

A better more Veeky Forums question is what are some /co/ approved books?

are you a child?

Stay pleb pleb

Tintin

Hellboy
Watchmen

Literally tumblr-tier.

I fucking love Jimmy Corrigan. It's one of those books you can only read if you REALLY want to cry, though. I'd actually argue it's more structurally complex than Watchmen.

When the Wind Blows
Watchmen
From Hell
Jimmy Corrigan
The Sandman: Endless Nights (Fifteen Portraits of Despair is still one of the heaviest things I've ever read)

Daredevil: Born Again is on the same tier as Watchmen. I highly recommend it.

Do you guys know of Here? entrecomics.com/?p=9431

A full book was released recently which is also good but I think the 6 page version has more of an emotional impact.

Thank you
