I was mainly referencing to the fancible ideas out there like Zizek's, who claim Enlightenment is mostly a political ideology and more like a "communism in waiting" and not, as you say, a tradition that fosters methodical reasoning with all its effects.

If you know a bit about the history of science in China, you'd know that the world was able to make quite the leaps in technology without the Royal Society and what not.
