Depends on what kind of welding it is. The grunt work type, fixing tractor tow bars won't make much, but the experienced guys who know how to handle alloys and do shit like high rise welding, or underwater welding for oil fields, it's big money.
Having said that, get an AA degree in it at a community college, and learn more than just the basics.
