yeah, notice the 8/12 can be divided by 4

so you get 2/3, which is the same but simpler

the graph and the equations are unrelated, they are two entirely different problems

in the second problem what you are doing is looking for the intersection of two functions

the first function (f) is a quadratic function (the shape is that of an arch)
the second function (g) is a linear function (it's a line)

you reached x2+x=7

now you do x2+x-7=0 and apply a famous formula that looks hard as fuck but eventually gets ingrained into your brain

x2 means that a=1 because there's an invisible 1 multiplying the x2
+x means that b=1 because there's an invisible 1 multiplying the x
-7 means that c=-7

so you plug it into picture related and get two values

f(x) = g(x)
x^2 + 2x - 8 = x - 1
x^2 + x - 7 = 0

x = (-b +- sqrt(b^2 - 4ac))/2a
x = (-1 +- sqrt (1 + 28))/ 2
x = (-1 +- 5.38)/2

x = 2.19
x' = -3.19
