>hasn't written over 100 songs laced with literary and historical allusions

Yikes

They would still be just songs.

>no philosophical allusions
heh

There isn't a single song that does this that isn't irritating and painful to listen to

I'm with you there. And using a thesaurus is about a thousand times more perilous for the songwriter than the novelist. It's almost better to just make up gibberish than try to force, say, prognostication into a song without. Why do big words in songs seems so twee or affected or otherwise annoying but that shit works fine in poetry? Even the greatest songwriters can't pull it off or don't do it, and the greatest musical settings of poetry, stuff like Dichterliebe, has source material with relatively direct language and most opera lyrics sound borderline retarded.

The word tintinnabulation sounds a lot better in a poem than in a song: youtube.com/watch?v=p3FzveBu_34

I like some of Phil Ochs but I think that setting is actually pretty crappy--let's just force this into a generic folk song!

listen to more than vulgar popular music, then.

I have NEVER understood the lyrics to a single Gorillaz song ever, and I've read Ulysses 2 and half times and enjoyed it.

Love, electricity, shockwave central
Power on the motherboard, yes
Push up, overload, legendary heavy glow
Sunshine, thunder roll, keep this on
Yes the lantern burn, burn that easy
And broadcast, so raw and neatly
Thunder roll, sunshine, work it out

Overload, overload, overload
Comin' up to the
Overload, overload, overload
Comin' up to the
Overload, overload, overload
Comin' up to the
Overload, overload, overload
Comin' up to the

Oh Stylo
Go forth, blossom in your soul
When you know your heart is light
Electric is the love

When the mako flies up from the bottom in your eyes
Then I know the twilight skies are not so broken hearted

If it's love is electric
It'll be flowing on the streets
Night after night
Just to get through the week
Sometimes it's hard

Right now

Sing yourself out of depression, rise above
Always searching if I know your heart
Electric is the love

There's only one way
Let it pray a little while longer
It's got a way of passing through man and woman
In another world
In another world, in the universe, oh

Right now

Here's what we got to do

If it's love is electric
It'll be flowing on the streets
Night after night
Just to get through the week
Sometimes it's hard

That's what I'm talking about

Love, electricity, shockwave central
Power on the motherboard, yes
Push up, overload, legendary heavy glow
Sunshine, thunder roll, keep this on
Yes the lantern burn, burn that easy
And broadcast, so raw and neatly
Thunder roll, sunshine, work it out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out

Right now

Seriously, what the fuck am I listening to?

City's breaking down on a camel's back
They just have to go 'cause they don't know whack
So all you fill the streets it's appealing to see
You won't get out the county, 'cause you're bad and free
You've got a new horizon It's ephemeral style
A melancholy town where we never smile
And all I want to hear is the message beep
My dreams, they've got to kiss, because I don't get sleep, no

Windmill, Windmill for the land
Learn forever hand in hand
Take it all in on your stride
It is stinking, falling down
Love forever love is free
Let's turn forever you and me
Windmill, windmill for the land
Is everybody in?

Laughing gas these hazmats, fast cats
Lining them up-a like ass cracks
Ladies, homies, at the track
It's my chocolate attack
Shit, I'm stepping in the heart of this here
Care bear bumping in the heart of this here
Watch me as I gravitate, ha ha ha
Yo, we gonna go ghost town
This Motown, with yo sound
You're in the place
You gonna bite the dust
Can't fight with us
With yo sound, you kill the INC
So don't stop, get it, get it
Until you're cheddar header
Yo, watch the way I navigate, ha ha ha

Windmill, windmill for the land
Turn forever hand in hand
Take it all in on your stride
It is stinking, falling down
Love forever love is free
Let's turn forever you and me
Windmill, windmill for the land
Is everybody in?

"classical" is dead

Quit spamming song lyrics. Gorillaz is entry level

'classical' isn't a classification.
>it's 2016!!!!
isn't an argument.

youtube.com/watch?v=a8u4H-s01S4
youtube.com/watch?v=_hR9BlGZKBA

Is both very good and 'conservative'. To say something is dead when not even 60 years ago this sort of 'neoclassical' was still thriving is pure arrogance.

It's aesthetic has permeated into 'mid-brow' entertainment through several OSTs.

I ain't happy, I'm feeling glad
I got sunshine in a bag
I'm useless but not for long
The future is coming on
I ain't happy, I'm feeling glad
I got sunshine in a bag
I'm useless but not for long
The future is coming on
It's coming on
It's coming on
It's coming on

Yeah... Ha Ha!
Finally someone let me out of my cage
Now, time for me is nothing cause I'm counting no age
Now I couldn't be there
Now you shouldn't be scared
I'm good at repairs
And I'm under each snare
Intangible
Bet you didn't think so I command you to
Panoramic view
Look I'll make it all manageable
Pick and choose
Sit and lose
All you different crews
Chicks and dudes
Who you think is really kickin' tunes?
Picture you gettin' down in a picture tube
Like you lit the fuse
You think it's fictional?
Mystical? Maybe.
Spiritual
Hero who appears in you to clear your view when you're too crazy
Lifeless
To those the definition for what life is
Priceless
To you because I put you on the high shit
You like it?
Gun smokin' righteous with one toke
You're psychic among those
Possess you with one go

[chorus]

The essence the basics
Without did you make it
Allow me to make this
Child-like in nature
Rhythm
You have it or you don't that's a fallacy
I'm in them
Every sprouting tree
Every child of peace
Every cloud and sea
You see with your eyes
I see destruction and demise (that's right)
Corruption in disguise
From this fuckin' enterprise
Now I'm sucked into your lies
Through Russel, not his muscles but percussion he provides
For me as a guide
Y'all can see me now 'cause you don't see with your eye
You perceive with your mind
That's the inner
So I'mma stick around with Russ and be a mentor
Bust a few rhymes so motherfuckers remember where the thought is
I brought all this
So you can survive when law is lawless (right here)
Feelings, sensations that you thought was dead
No squealing, remember that it's all in your head

I ain't happy, I'm feeling glad
I got sunshine in a bag
I'm useless but not for long
The future is coming on
I ain't happy, I'm feeling glad
I got sunshine in a bag
I'm useless but not for long
My future is coming on
It's coming on
etc.

Bitch.

Just over 60*

You get the point.

there is no meaning. its a bunch of cliche words and phrases that vaguely suggest some sort of "depth" while being devoid of any coherent meaning or insight

its pop drivel

Now we're counting seconds.
We've lost our only guide.
Left to watch our waking life fall to earth and collide.
Here memory serves no purpose.
Here hope is as vile a thing as the setting sun,

but all we ever wanted was to find out way back home.
To crawl back inside of you and forget we were ever born.

>no This Heat lyrics

Fucking plebs don't even know that we are all Romans

user, you know there is a compromise, right? poetry. all the best things of both worlds. go read some poetry. i like the epic poems myself, but there's something for everyone out there.

The problem isn't that there aren't songs with interesting/philosophical lyrics, it's just that you/we don't know them.

If you're interested in other languages, check out Zona MC, Murubutu and Creaturine Maggiche. They're Italian, but their lyrics are genuinely incredible - same for the instrumentals.

Fuck it, I'm just linking the songs.

>Creaturine Magiche - La MORTE come inizio del nulla, come fine del tutto, e come soluzione a...
youtube.com/watch?v=5uv2GQ6i5a8

>Murubutu - Diogene di Sinope e la scuola cinica
youtube.com/watch?v=ouiN6yGvGic

>ZonaMC - Odissea di Ulisse pensionato di Bellaria
youtube.com/watch?v=zTFqM5xUY9M

>yfw you're trying so hard to be more mature than your 18 years that you can't see Conor Oberst has been more literarily relevant than 99% of contemporary writers since he released Fevers and Mirrors

>whiny jew is more relevant than my feces
yeah right user.

I know, thats why i wrote """""classical""""

Parquet Courts - Master Of My Craft is the goat though

>SOCRATES DIED IN THE FUCKING GUTTER

Cringe

No book can tell you what music does. And I don't mean lyrics either.

It's post rock now.

A lot of people are late bloomers, particularly if you happen to be gifted but have retarded parents. Here is a fact I learned today which resulted in this theory. When you are young there is a 0.4 correlation of the heritable IQ of the father and child, so the IQ is not determined at this point by the genetic capabilities of the person but by other factors. However, when the child is older that number becomes a 0.8 correlation. So if you have a good IQ but your parents don't then they will probably lead you down the wrong path in life until you get older and wake up from your imbecility.

This.

I wish I hadn't had retarded parents. Even on the smallest things, like the fact that they shunned any kind of credit card or banking and implanted in my mind that I needed to do the same, have made life harder in adulthood.

But the lucky thing is that life expectancy is great in modern times, so you still have time to make use of your mind.

Lel
I scored 130, which i think is pretty decent, in a iq test when i was a kid, but i had permisive, leftist parents that didnt give a fuck if i smoked weed during my teenage years and now i think im retarded.
But is iq really a thing? I think hard work, discipline and motivation are 100 times more Important. Sadly i dont have any of those lel.

But being old sucks, your dick doesnt even get hard.

>is iq really a thing
yes

Ok so i got an above average score, but i was too inmature to use that advantage because
>muh depression + weed
Wouldnt a TRULY clever person see how stupid they are and wouldnt they got over their feelings?
How can you have an above average iq and still be retard?
Doesnt that make the whole iq thing completly worthless?

You someone how sound so proud. It makes me a little sick.

It's predictive over larger populations for things like income and academic achievement.

So, how good you are at life?

?

In some respects.

>he's impressed by page counts

Plebeians like you are the only reason anyone talks about Wallace.

You're parents were retards. You don't have to be like them. You should have gotten talk therapy. You still can. Then you can move on with your life and have ambitions.

>have ambitions
pure ideology

Get some talk therapy. In the meantime I am going to stop talking with you.

I () am not mr 130.

kek i know i dont have/want to be like them.
therapy is a fucking scam my dude.
i wish i could follow DFW steps and commit sudoku but i dont have the balls.

#treal

IQ is total bollox because you can prepare and study for it - it doesn't calculate your ultimate capacity for learning or creativity it just gives you a reference for a given age - I agree with you on the self discipline point

i got 138 and the parentals encouraged me through law & grad school but now imma unemployed antinatalist degen reading my way to the lonely little grave

I found talk therapy has pretty much the same effect as weed, meditation or team sports in that it just helps erase/brake off negative/cyclical trains of thought and sort of frees up headspace

>erase/brake off negative/cyclical trains of thought
LSD is the best for that

lsd made me cry for like 12 hours without feeling sad but it also cleared my head.. so yes, agreed

You mean the era? Of course the era is dead, it isn't a fucking genre you dipshit it's music of aesthetic similarity created over a length of time.

Neoclassical is still alive and well, and Neoclassical existed to stitch the classical era aesthetic with the modernist aesthetic so that it may both be progressive and reactionary.

>He hasn't listened to In the Wake of Poseidon

It can also exacerbate things.. give you more to think about. In a situation where you are struggling because of thinking too much, it will accelerate progress but also accelerate rock bottom.

yeah pretty much playing with fire

Melancholy Hill is one of my favourite songs and has got me laid twice. Lyrics are pretty straightforward to that.

Post rock is the epitome of boring music. It's still just rock (without the fun part), reveling in its agony.

What of Arcade Fire's Reflektor?
