I'm hoping to finish my PhD now. Getting a postdoc afterwards would be nice, but we get emails constantly about quant positions and industry research so I'm sure I'll figure something out. Graduation is a long way away.

Yes, Veeky Forums is full of undergrads and high school students. I remember browsing during HS, but I knew I was too ignorant to be posting. That doesn't seem to be a popular opinion among HS students.

People actually use LinkedIn?

Hey Veeky Forums, help me on this
I'm planning to get back to college, aiming for neuroscience R&D

But it seems the only way for me to get in is either Psychology or Biomedic engineer, on this country at least
Now, there's an oversaturation of Psychology grads and only about 8% of Biomedic grads get hired

I deeply despise what Psychology has become, but Biomedics are a gamble here, moreso outside of the own University's R&D department

Anyone on the field care to guide me to the right direction?

People will think you're old, that's about it in terms of age. Study hard, don't take your time for granted. If you don't understand something, don't give up and keep at it. Ask questions, always ask questions, but ask questions that are relevant. Enjoy it while it lasts. I already miss it.

Pretty fun for now, considering I knew nothing about bioinformatics before I started, so lots to learn. One thing I learned is that people I work with come from all sorts of fields with all sorts of degree levels - MDs, PhDs, engineers, astrophysicists, computer scientists, biochemists, molecular biologists, pharmacists, people with only a high school degree, double majors (for example, medicine and electrical engineering), all sorts of people, and we all do basically the same job.
So, in the end, it really doesn't matter what you majored in. It's the 21st century, with a couple of months in, you can basically learn most of the stuff you need to re-qualify to most other professions.

It's been three monts since I'm looking for a job, but requisites are at least five years of experience and being 35 years old since the jobs I'm applying for pay "too much" (about 1350 usd per month) and a little "kid" like me does not deserve such a "good" salary... and most of the people thinks mathematics are useless.

Hopefully get to stay at the company as long as I can, maybe transfer to another department or be a manager in the next 5 years. Then field other job offers if I think I can do better, if not stay and make a career out of it.

Overall I feel very lucky, I've been looking for a job like this one for about a year since I graduated and if all goes well I can build a life around this. Most of my other jobs weren't nearly as nice as this one, I just hope I don't manage to fuck it up. If I get fired or lose interest I may consider going back to school for something, haven't figured that out yet. Probably won't until the education system gets overhauled as I don't have the resources to support myself as a full-time student and grad student pay is slave wages, if there is pay at all. More likely it will cost me vast amounts of money which I don't have.

Got into it from a strictly computer science background. A few of my professors were interested in having me as a PhD candidate, and I got a lead that my university was starting was starting up a "cyborg" project and that there were spots so I applied.

I suppose it was a case of being at the right place at the right time.

If this thing shows potential I'd love to do some post doc work, but ultimately I want to start something on my own, preferably related to my research.

Moving with the job or going back to grad school, not sure. Every year I'm out of real academia it gets harder.

It might sound sort of nonchalant, but I should add I've literally dreamt of doing this since I was a child. It's not like it just fell into my lap, I was proactive and I talked to the profs I get along with well etc.

We're gonna be working with MEAs, they'll be installed soon so hopefully we'll have preliminary results this year

That just means her degree will rapidly become obsolete.

It's huge in a lot of industries. Surprised me too but there it is.

>Psychology has become
Don't confuse psychology as shown in popsci with real, modern psychology. The field's maturing and engaging in self-reflection pretty heavily. It's fusing pretty hard with Better-Psychology (CogSci), but that's not a problem with the methodologies. I get the skepticism and i'd never major in psych, but it's not as bad as you'd think.

That is really cool to hear there are people working on these kinds of things. Do you think someone who went to a small school would be able to get into research like this?

I dunno, it's something I kinda stumbled upon honestly. What's your field of study?

That's why you must not come here... unless you wanna an easy way to get your degree and 540 usd per month for doing nothing.

user, this is the third world. An average bacherlor earns 500 - 600 usd per month, and the common people, 4 usd per day (both without taxes); companies don't give a shit about your degree but the little piece of paper that officialy shows that you actually got it; besides that, you only need to know how to do your job.

My only hope is getting a job on a bank or something alike, thogh I'd like a job on compiler research/programming.

I just graduated with a BS in CS.

I highly doubt that. Yes it's useless but I'd say it's the other way around. The last thing you want to do about actual academic achievements is brag about them on Veeky Forums. It just feels petty.

didn't know sci was full of so many cucks, it's just a roastie.

... or... lets be honest, you proabably cut Veeky Forums out of your life after a certain level of achievement.

I actually think this thread feels pretty honest, excepting the high school kids who I suspect are out there but not responding (wisely, i might add)
