Climate change disasters

Even if we had the will, do we have the technology to stop or even slow down climate change? Could renewables take over the majority of energy production today? Or are we looking at a slow transition in tech that might come too late. Essentially, are we already fucked?

>Florida gone
>A bad thing

I for one welcome the warm future

But how can I binge drink margaritas for a week in the outer banks if half of North Carolina is gone?

>are we already fucked?

Why would we, Americans, be fucked? The only immediate problem is coastal flooding but this is fixable through the US Army Corps of Engineers, who can build levees and dams wherever they want in order to contain the problem.

The longer term problem, desertification, won't be an issue in the US as the USAA and USDA are absolutely paranoid over it thanks to the disaster the Dust Bowl was. As a result, if rain doesn't happen in America's breadbasket then we'll do silly amounts of desalination and pipe it up there. Or steal water from the arctic (ie, Canada) and ship it down.

The only people who are fucked are third world countries that don't have the money or expertise for megaprojects. And europe, because europeans will gladly accept the millions of refugees that are produced.

Are you naive? Do you think that Mexicans and Latin Americans are just going to give up and starve?

Fuck no, they're going to do what all humans do: survive at all costs when their lives are at peril. They're going to try to invade The U.S. and Canada. A fucking wall won't hold them back. The same thing with Europe, Russia, and China. It's going to be a world war for food.

How long before the nukes come out in such a scenario?

If you think civilization as we know it is going to survive this one you're an idiot.

Stereotypes aside, the vast majority of the hispanic world (especially Mexico and Brazil) are large enough to pay for whatever projects they need to keep people fed. Also the US funds "development" projects down there, if only to ensure that Mcdonalds a steady supply of beef. Even then, Mexico and Brazil have advanced enough militaries where they can instate a total crackdown with the help of the US. It already happened once, with the Cristero War a century ago. South of the border nobody cares if migrants starve to death.

>How long before the nukes come out in such a scenario?

The only issue is China, who honestly doesn't have the expertise to stop desertification of their farmland meanwhile they polluted all their coastal waters beyond the point of usability. In which case they'll likely let people starve again (like they did under Mao, ~60 million dead) until the problem stops happening. Such is life under communism.

Evidence suggest that major efforts in alternative energy could slow climate change to manageable levels. It's really up to us how fucked we want to be.

Biggest issue is food supply. With a single degree of change most corps grown in the tropics are dead. It happened last year. This forces people to move to where the food is. As in Mexicans moving north into America. This is why Trump REALLY wants to build the wall, to keep the flood of refugees away. He knows about global warming and his plan is to let everyone south of the border die.

We need to roll out mas nuclear power yesterday, and get massive banks of carbon sequestration machines going. We can then process the CO2 into shit like carbon fiber and use it for cars and other machines.

Look being rid of florida is a good thing, but keep in mind those Floridians will have to go somewhere.

If we were serious about it, we could do it. That and we really ought to build more nukes.

For all intents and purposes, too late was years ago. It's not about being fucked any more, it's about being less fucked

You don't understand. Food won't fucking grow. Crops will fail. You can't throw money at that.

Again we're not talking about a few migrants, or even a few million. We're talking a hundred million at least.

Yes you can. In the US, the government can build water projects to ensure food can grow. It's what they did in the southwest. Likewise, crop cycling can help preserve nutrients in soil, preventing dust from forming. And ultimately there is desalination. Domestically it's a non-issue as there is cash for this if only through big agribiz lobbying for it. The same is true for latin America, as Americans will get pissed off if hamburgers become expensive.

And, in China, people will starve and a crackdown will occur. Then life will continue on. Just like what happened last time.

>In the US, the government can build water projects to ensure food can grow

>almonds requires lots of water
>California wide drought
>price of almonds goes up
>California grows nothing but almonds
>nobody but the rich can afford to buy the almonds
>tons of almonds goes in landfills
>price of almonds keeps going up
>keep growing more almonds

Don't expect the US to act in the best interest of everybody or even with common sense for that matter.

And California is also spending $50 billion on desalination, right now. Also the USAA told all the almond growers to cycle their crops but they never listen. Perhaps having all of them go bankrupt and sell their property to housing developers or corporate farms will fix the problem.

Point is, it's not a problem for Americans.

>>US Army Corps of Engineers

Yeah, because they did such a fine job with the levees that Katrina decimated.

>tfw I just wanted to the universe to keep going for eternity, and for me to live for an eternity doing whatever I like with whatever advance technology we have.
>tfw I gotta deal with immigrants and shit like climate disaster.
Fuck this gay earth.

>Being this entitled.

>Being this greedy.

Sounds like you're yet another ex-Christian who is still crying that there is no afterlife and wants science to make one for them.

How far into the future is this? Sick of a 12-hour drive to the nearest beach.

You liberals are destroying western civilization without our fucking lifetimes

And you think anyone gives a shit about "climate change" bullshit?

notice how the levees got rebuilt, and how they now manage it's maintenance and not Louisiana

Yes, good, keep distracted by your hate, boyo. We know that shit is going to hit the fan, it's just a matter of keeping good ol' boys like you distracted with hating liberals and minorities while we continue to amass wealth to ensure that our position is maintained. We aren't going to starve, after all. Only the poors will truly suffer. Because to us, you're all niggers if you're poor, just a filthy plebeian.

>Florida and North Carolina destroyed

Fuck electric cars, I want everyone to drive cars that burn coal. Let's cut down the entire rainforest and turn it into feed lots for cattle ASAP.

But the real question is;

Would that reverse entropy?

>Even if we had the will, do we have the technology to stop or even slow down climate change?
Yes.

>Could renewables take over the majority of energy production today?
No.

>Or are we looking at a slow transition in tech that might come too late.
Sadly, probably yes. But it's a political problem, not a technological one. The solutions are already available.

>Essentially, are we already fucked?
Probably. Fucking Greens and other so-called environmentalists.

Why don't we build super giant air conditioner at the north pole? And we can collect all the heat it generates to build a heat-powered electricity station used for the giant air conditioner!
