I believe physical attractiveness IS correlated with overall fitness. However, this fitness is normal to some benchmark for our species. We have accidentally surpassed this baseline. It's definitely a mutation, an accident that survived, even though environmental factors should have weeded it out long ago, but somehow did not. Physical attractiveness may not be necessary for survival, but survival isn't the sole driver of evolution. Reproduction is the second driver. Hence, attractiveness becomes quite important. But only if you are looking to survive and reproduce and do nothing more. (Unsurprisingly, that's most people.)

What I really wonder is what the source of preferences is. If attractiveness was purely linked to health then there would exist the most attractive person. Yet past a certain point of attractiveness the opinions differ. I think one theory was that we prefer features that compliment ours? I really want to see some research done in this area.
