Samuel Johnson. He was a smart guy and wrote some shit. He's probably dead now. The chances of him being deceased are quite high.
Also the reason he is meme status is because that image is highly exploitable. The look of disgust on his face leads posters to use it to show disdain for a poster. Perhaps because of their "Pleb" sensibilities and taste. It's as if he's thinking, "The fuck you say?!?"
That's Harold Bloom in his younger years.

He's a Veeky Forums forefather. Never read Boswell's Life of Johnson, should pick it up soon.
This, but he also had high level banter.
Harold Bloom, a man with no penis
the good doctor wrote some excellent but somewhat ignored poetry, some better remembered literary and poetic criticism and complied one of the first comprehensive dictionaries.
also, and my source for this is QI so take it with a pinch of salt, was into BDSM and liked to be whipped ... interesting guy.
Fuck me don't let /pol/ know his backstory, he'll be their new patron saint.

he was also against slavery and imperialism though
old jacobites and modern conservatives don't have all that much in common
I read something about him dying, like, around the time david bowie did but it turns out he died a few years back.
He's actually famous because of this episode of Blackadder:

He's the greatest hack writer that ever lived.
It's ironic that his contemporaries thought he would go into the canon and be studied forever, when all anybody reads of his are the witty quotations recorded by Boswell.
People are more interested as him as a character and a wit than as a writer. Any reasonably educated person can tell you that he ate like an animal, took snuff by the fistfull, was ridden with motor tics, and prejudiced against the Scots. But they probably can't quote one line from any of his writings, or even name one besides his Dictionary.
>I mean yeah thanks, I'm not a complete piece of shit.
You weren't, far as we knew, but now you definitely are.
what's with the white light
critics are hardly ever remembered from ages past.
Look at ruskin. not talked about outside of academic circles.
>and prejudiced against the Scots
He's already in my top 10
