I don't have a college degree. And it makes me self-conscious. In the media, people are always criticized for being "uneducated" and such. I want to come across as an intelligent person and a deep thinking, but if I never went to college, will that concept just be unacceptable for most people?

I don't think there's an objective universal rule for telling whether or not someone is educated, but I think the closest thing you have is how responsive that person can be in a conversation.

In my own personal experience, less educated people are really slow when being spoken to and struggle with otherwise simple ideas and arguments.

There are a lot of factors to this however. Some people may be socially awkward, yet still be intelligent. Other times, someone may not just be educated in whatever topic is being discussed.

As far as the latter goes, I admire someone who puts forth effort into being intellectually curious and asking about said subject matter. So for example:

To me, someone who is not well educated is someone who is not putting forth the effort to learn something and chooses to sit idle.

I have observed, that one can estimate others intelligence best, when they have considerably lower IQ, but when getting closer to equal, one tends to judge by things, that needs specializing, or at least exposure to the subject. (And of course for their own benefit, mostly)
It is harder to see, if someone is somewhere about 10-30 points higher than oneself, but rare genius can be mostly seen quite clearly.
(except when they behave weirdly, act foolish and childish, are very afraid of socializing, etc. which is often)
Even experienced psychologists have cases, where they guess totally wrong, just by the first impression. Mostly in cases when they think that someone above 130 is sub-90 retard.
(Its understandable, since most customers/patients are, and pessimist never expects interesting cases to emerge.)
But being educated is not the same as intelligence. One can be a diletant of many things without going to uni. If you study things on your own 4-6hours a day, read book/week or more, discuss about things you´ve learned with "good" company, you soon are more educated than most.
