I just learned you cant shape or add when sculpting with marble like you can with clay. WTF. I cant even comprehend how this was done with no mistakes not to mention he was 23 years old when finished.

You had to LEARN that you couldn't add to a marble sculpture? You didn't understand this using common sense? Come on now, OP.

So is BTC dipping or not?

why is this biz?

are you thinking of investing in art op?

I have but archiving and storage is horrible

there's heaps of things you can't comprehend user who gives a fuck

You just learned what marble is then?

Not only that, but it often times, when you've spent months sculpting, you could come across a black vein lodged within the block which would ruin the whole statue, and so you'd have to start everything from scratch. This famously happened to Michelangelo once.

that's amazing

I have a friend that patrols ebay for asian art from people that think they are selling random bullshit from World Market. Some of the shit on there is being sold for 1% of what it could being in at an auction because people just don't care about researching shit they have before they sell it. A ton of money in it but you have to know a lot about what you're looking for and shipping, storage, and selling it is a huge hassle.

He didn't have to spend all day in school so he spent all day learning and doing cool and actually valuable shit like that

The word “sincerely” has its roots in marble sculpting. If the sculpture happened to be chipped or imperfect in any way, the sculptor would fill the gaps or mistakes in with “cera”, or wax. So the perfect sculptures would be known as “sin cera” or “without wax”.

it's amazing what autists were able to accomplish before Veeky Forums was invented

This sounds like baloney senpai, there are tons of chinese reproductions out there masquerading as the real thing. Seems like the only people who'd profit are the ones running the painting farms.

Lots and lots and lots and lots of practice. And a lot of planning, design, and thinking about every chip you remove. Your brain (if you have any creativity and talent) thinks in terms of 3D space, and in terms of voids and volumes. You don't just pick up a chisel and start banging away, he'd often do a form in clay or wax before starting a marble. Then, you spend a lot of time looking at what you're doing, in between short bursts of carving.
But yeah, it's one of the hardest art forms, which is why few try it, and why it's pretty much a lost art - I'd bet most of the techniques people like him are forgotten.

That’s amazing
I’m assuming he spent all of his time carving and practicing and it probably took a long time in between statues.

Wow I actually learned something on this board, awesome

When you have over 20+ years doing the same thing over and over again, people tend to git gud

How could a sculptor possibly add marble you absolute retard

Because he wasn't a useless NEET investing in tokenized bronze futures and bothered to spend time learning a skill

Nah it's legit. He only manages to find something legit maybe two or three times a year, but that's all you really need if you're just keeping it in storage and letting it appreciate in value. It definitely isn't something you can do for a living though and you do end up with a useless piece of shit every now and then if you aren't careful.

Was he a BRAAAAP poster?

What's the guy's background and how'd he get into it? I have some fine art locked up, but mainly as a way to hold money and move it with no hassle if I have to. Haven't considered approaching it speculatively like your friend has, and idk if its worth the time desu.
Post a decent write up about it, and a btc addy.

people lived only to like 50 years old in those times.

Teenagers were having kids and figuring life out by the time they were 20 with wife and kids. When you were a teen you were a man because you couldn't live to 30 being a kid like todays fucking man childern.

You wanted to be a sculpture you just fucking did it, there weren't schools to take up your whole fucking day all the way to 18 you went out in the world and figured shit out as soon as you realized your dick gets hard.

Mate classical artists are the definition of NEETs leeching off the patrons.

It actually didnt take him long. when you’re at the galleria borghese, the audio guide tells you he is forced to reproduce one and does it in no time. Then again, the rape of persephony is the best sculpture tbqhimo. Bernini was able to do this because he was an absolutely insecure cuck. Please don’t compare michelangelo to bernini in the realm of sculpting, although michelangelo is the best painter of all time

>Business & Finance

It's negative thinking. Most people can't handle modus tolens, much less something like reducing marble to a sculpture.

its amazing what guys did before porn desu

art is applicable, you have to understand people commission art and there is history behind the galleria borghese and the pieces that were comissioned. speculative investment history, maybe we can learn a thing to apply to market behavior today

dude have you ever handled marble before? Holy shit I can't believe you thought you could add to it like clay.

This is truly a ponzi scheme that attracts brainlets

>the more you know.jpg

>how was it done?

A shitton of practice.

Think of life back then
There was literally nothing to do other than a trade, drinking, fucking, or dying from disease
If you wanted to do something you focused on it religiously

Watched a YouTube video of a guy doing these sculptures. He made the basic shape in like a couple hours and then you just sand down more and more details. Looked pretty easy when you know how it's done.

Craftsmanship is dead
Average house from turn of the 20th century compared to shit that is knocked up today... far out. Foam walls with render, falls apart within a decade.

That response couldn't be more millennial

Yeah, i'd choose fucking

Congrats, this is just amazing.
Think of ten such sculptures carved side by side, one above the other, or an entire war scene etc all from one single stone!!! Look into the monolith sculptures of the old world-- greece, india, china etc. They will blow your mind.

I don't really know too much about his background other than his parents being involved in some shady stuff and he learned a lot about art dealing from them. They're even paying his sister's tuition so she can learn Chinese to help them out and send her off to buy art all the time. They're all pretty shitty people so I don't know too much about the details beyond what he told me when I worked for him and helped him list a few cheap pieces on ebay a few years ago. It probably isn't really worth it unless you are really knowledgeable about what you're looking for and are good about getting information from sellers without tipping them off about how they're selling something valuable.

Jesus look at his hand gripping her thigh. That is incredibly impressive, the tiny details like that. Not to mention the beard, fuck. The everything.

Dude look at her eyes
I can see into her soul

sculpture of me after I make it

Wow didn’t even notice that. And the veins on his arms. Man, I’m so impressed by this. And also feel like a complete failure in life. Idk of op posted on the wrong board or what but I’m glad he did.

Remember contraceptives were frowned upon so unless you had elite tier pull or game or didn’t mind kicking a woman in her stomach you really couldn’t do it all the time

Wrong. There has been a temptation to see the first element as Latin sine "without." But there is no etymological justification for the common story that the word means "without wax" (*sin cerae), which is dismissed out of hand by OED and others, and the stories invented to justify that folk etymology are even less plausible. Watkins has it as originally "of one growth" (i.e. "not hybrid, unmixed"), from PIE *sm-ke-ro-, from *sem- "one" (see same) + root of crescere "to grow" (see crescent). De Vaan finds plausible a source in a lost adjective *caerus "whole, intact," from a PIE root meaning "whole."

back then, porn was a hidden motivation for art too

Goddamn English teachers teaching me the wrong shit. Should have stuck to Veeky Forums.

I've pulled out my whole life and never had a problem.

>I just learned you cant shape or add when sculpting with marble like you can with clay.
Are you literally 8 y/o and/or 50 IQ?
