Kindles and E-Readers

Are there any studies that exist that show that 'E-Ink' does not have the same detrimental effects on reading comprehension as do E-Readers without E-Ink?

What about the physicality of the an actual book and the touching of pages--is this not relevant?

Why would you own two Kindles?

I've only seen one study that concluded e-books resulted in worse comprehension than paper, but they made no distinction in the device being used to display the e-book, lumping together proper e-ink readers and tablets with LCD screens.

Being rich is more impressive to most people than not being rich; also good quality paper feel better than plastic buttons. More news at 11.

Seriously: a text is a text, everything else is luxury.

You lose comprehension capability when using a device with a screen though

Ah, its this fag again. Dude, no one cares about your made up superiority.

E-ink is not a screen in any physical way a LCD device is

I am not claiming superiority or taking position. The image was supposed to be provocative in order to gain attention so as to get my answer quicker.

Maybe some do. I never noticed anything.

Dont feed the troll, just sage this shit

K. Its not relevant. The content is relevant. Theres your answer, go be a retard somewhere else now, faggot.

*tips fedora*

I also vape and swing katana, my friend ;)

>The content is relevant.
What do you mean?

Go look it up in a dictionary. Kindles have those built in fyi

I know what the words mean, I am asking you to elaborate on what you said

Why not just answer the question? Jesus Christ, some of you people are sensitive

To answer your question, no there are no studies disproving this piece of conjecture with no empirical backing. Its almost as if researchers have better things to do

The content matters, not the platform. There isnt more to elaborate on. If you think the medium in which you read matters youre just a pleb. But maybe you dont understand cause youre reading this on a lcd screen ( and lcd != e-ink), maybe you should go print it at a kinkos, faggot

>What about the physicality of the an actual book and the touching of pages--is this not relevant?
Do you realize that writing precedes books?

>Its almost as if researchers have better things to do
>Its
disgusting
No. The researchers that govern in this field really do not have better things to do if they have not already come to a solid conclusion on the matter.

>The content matters, not the platform.
I am not asking you if reading a demanding textbook vs an entertaining short story makes a difference in someones ability to comprehend the subject matter of a book. Read the question again.

>If you think the medium in which you read matters youre just a pleb.
>youre
Disgusting
I do not think that. I am undecided on that matter and want to know the answer to the question I am asking.

Of course, although I really do not see how what you are saying is relevant at all

Faggot

I was against e-readers and still remain somewhat skeptical, though I did find a study that suggests e-readers with e-ink do not show comprehension loss--and that apparently under certain situations e-readers can provide better legibility than print books.

Out of all of these constant debate threads I am surprised nobody has every mentioned it from the pro-e-reading side.

I have not read the full thing as I do not wish to pay for academic papers that I know little about, so if someone knows of a free copy out there, than perhaps they could share further information.

?

I buy hardbacks of the books I love so I can loan them to friends and have the aesthetic experience on rereading. I steal and devour everything under the digital sun first though.

>impressive
No one cares.
Separate pages.
E-readers don't have a real screen.

As I keep saying, it's physical ink on a physical blank background, often has no backlight.

>often has no backlight
Why is that relevant at all?

Also, e-ink is able to mimic physical ink to a point, but of course it is not the same. The studies on e-ink that are out there however show that printed ink and e-ink does not make a difference in comprehension

Backlight is harsh on the eyes, since it is still an electric white light.

E-ink is functionally the same as printed ink, the difference is irrelevant since they are perceived the same way and its sole purpose is to be perceived.

>Backlight is harsh on the eyes, since it is still an electric white light.
For some people. Though this can be turned on and off instantly

>E-ink is functionally the same as printed ink
No, they are both fundamentally different things.

>the difference is irrelevant
The difference is extremely relevant. Especially given the fact that previous e-readers resulted in a lack of comprehension. How could it not be relevant? However, like I said, the most up to date studies show no difference in comprehension levels vs printed ink

Faggot

>studies

fucking pleb. comprehension? who cares. I don't want the kind of qt Veeky Forums gf who notices my kindle, I want the one that notices my beautifully appointed bookshelves and morocco-bound copy of Paradise Lost.

Why don't you just do both?

Faggot

Good response, you seem like the kind of guy who really has a handle on his life.

Because I wouldn't be caught dead reading a fucking kindle? They're a symbol of debased consumerism and a vulgar mind.

>Because I wouldn't be caught dead reading a fucking kindle? They're a symbol of debased consumerism and a vulgar mind.
I can understand (slightly) your first bit of reasoning, but why do you say that it is a symbol of a vulgar mind?

I don't care to analyse why this is the case: just rest assured that it is.

>my beautifully appointed bookshelves and morocco-bound copy of Paradise Lost.
This is a long shot, but you might know. Where can I buy the (full) philokalia? I've only found it as an e-book..

Uh, Amazon? It isn't a rare book.

Spot on, thanks. I've never used that site before (non-anglo here), so it didn't came to my mind.

Guys.

> How come I can read for 3-5 hours happily on my shitty laptop screen but get distracted easily from my books. Never read for more than 2hours straight with a book.

> I think it has a huge amount to do with words per page. I set my E-read app to about 50 huge words per page and click through rapidly. I enjoy reading way more this way, and can get through a book in a few days.

> why

> I should maybe just get those BIG ASS books for people with bad eyesight

> answering my own question bonus: I do actually require glasses but haven't bothered in over 17 years, age 8

Faggot

are you actually retarded?

>Disgusting
The most reddit tier post ever

"touching the pages" isn't important AFAIK. What's important is for people who are used to reading physical to keep doing it, because it is another way to classify information (left page, right page, as well as higher vs lower and position in the physical book) whereas these classifiers are way less clear in the ebook, where the words disappear. I don't think this means less comprehension, though. Just that if people are used to reading physical, they will understand less. People who were raised reading on screens on the internet will have no problem using ereaders, likely. So these threads is probably a manifestation of the disconnect of people raised on reading with different habits.

It is legit. I have a "complete works of shakespeare" book with tiny print and columns, and only about 15-20 pages per play. It is tougher to read than a larger-print book, and this is from someone w/o the problems you are talking about.

Why do we always have these pointless threads? Let's just discuss literature and everyone can use their preferred device. Personally, I use both. I prefer reading on my kindle though.

>buying books to "impress" people
Never going to make it

I read my books on my small old smartphone, it's alright. I want to buy an E-Reader because I want to see if there's really a difference between my smartphone and the meme "E-Ink". Can you use torrented pdf and epubs on an E-reader? Else it would make absolutely no sense to buy one.

Which one should I choose?

>I want to see if there's really a difference between my smartphone and the meme "E-Ink"

There is a huge difference IMO.

>Can you use torrented pdf and epubs on an E-reader?

Yes, use Calibre to convert file types (if it's not the correct type already).

>Which one should I choose?

Kindle Paperwhite

>double spaces
opinion discarded fagot, I don't care about reddit's opinion. Please get the fuck out of my board.

Still waiting for an answer.

pro-tip: Get the freeware Briss java program for converting PDFs to a nice clean size (i.e removing the white border on mac/pc).

PDF's are ok on paperwhite, be mindful that the imperfections of the scan are multiplied on low res greyscale and it's harder to navigate down the page but it is better than reading on a screen if you don't have an A+ monitor.

>I want to see if there's really a difference between my smartphone and the meme "E-Ink"

Go and read the next chapter of your book at any department store which showcases them. Just find the .mobi file of your book online or upload it to your g-drive and use the kindle's wifi browser to download it via your phones hotspot.

>discarded opinions of a faggot

thanks for the book title, user.

>been on Veeky Forums for 10 years (no joke)
>briefly visited reddit two, maybe three times
>reddit's opinion

ok

Where I live there are no department stores of Amazon or that would sell Kindles/e-readers. So if I want to buy an E-Reader I will have to buy it through the internet and hope for the best. I'm NEET so I don't have that much money and I'm not sure which E-reader is good, I feel like the Kindle is a leddit meme.

>double spaces
>been on Veeky Forums for 10 years
>(no joke)
Just kill yourself my man, there's no need to lie on my board. I don't want reddit fags like you on my board so please just get out of my board forever. You can have a great discussion about your favorite book, the fault in our stars, on /r/books.

>I'm NEET
>I feel like the Kindle is a leddit meme.

kek. Trust me, it is. Nothing exceeds the pleasure of gently grazing my fingertips across the pages of my favorite book, the fault in our stars. I also enjoy the odors from the various foodstuffs residue left on the pages from my previous readings. Us patrician NEET /b/ros need to bring back REAL BOOKS not this e-ink leddit meme.

>been on Veeky Forums for 10 years
Oh, I can tell.

>continuing to double space
Can you please just shut the fuck up and finally get the fuck off my board? What the fuck is your problem, why the fuck do you even visit Veeky Forums? You're a redditor, so why do you go on Veeky Forums? Someone that has "been on Veeky Forums for 10 years (NO JOKE)" wouldn't make such a shit reddit joke and make fun of NEETs.

Didn't you read my prior posts where I clearly stated that I read on my old smartphone you fucking idiot? I don't read physical books because I don't live in America and translations of the books I want to read are absolutely abhorrent.

You don't fit in my board, so please just get off it. Get off this entire website, it's not for people like it. Reddit is for people like you, maybe even Tumblr.

NOBODY, no fucking body wants you on my board, neither me nor the other guys. Why the fuck do you want to make a website that others enjoy shit? You have plenty of websites where you can find people with the same mindset like you, reddit, tumblr.

I'll repeat myself again, get the fuck out of my board.

kek. relax, man. i didn't mean to trigger an emotional outburst. just giving you a hard time because you sperged out about the way i format my posts. this is the first time anyone has ever called attention to it.

btw your post is double spaced. what's your r/books username? i'll add you!

:^)

>this will always be more impressive to own
>buying books to impress people

>What about the physicality of the an actual book and the touching of pages

What the fuck do you think an e-reader is, virtual reality? Do you not touch it, or do you have your mom hold it in front of your face and turn the pages? Do you believe touching real American paper made from American trees versus gripping Chinese polycarbonate made from Saudi oil somehow improves your comprehension? Literature, much unlike your dick, is in your head, not in your hand. It's like head movies, simple Jack. Now go copy this post on some vellum and comprehend the fuck out of it as you daintily finger the diaphanous, retention-enhancing lamb's butt skin.

You're NEET then you can't afford not to with all the piracy it grants. It's a long term investment of $100 odd dollars, keep an eye out for em in the classifieds websites. I plan on mine lasting 5 years at bare minimum. Even second hand books in the dollar bin would cost you more than that over time.

It wasn't an emotional outburst, retard. The next thing you will do is say that I'm "triggered" or that you're just trolling. Your double space usage and mine are completely different, your's reddit, mine is proper, you fucking fagot. Please just get the fuck out of my board, nobody likes you here, nobody wants you here, you're not funny, you're not smart, you're not interesting, you don't fit in, you're just an annoying reddit fagot that posts trash.

Get out of my board.

>fagot

lol, okay big guy. i am astonished that you are so have so much pride and concern for Veeky Forums culture yet cannot spell the most commonly used word on this website: 'faggot' (the first time I assumed it was a typo). also, it's cute that you keep saying 'no true user would do x'. it would benefit you to familiarize yourself with this handy wikipedia article:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_true_Scotsman

i apparently do so many things that 'no real Veeky Forums user would do' and yet i can almost guarantee i've been here longer than you. you'll just have to deal with the fact that i frequent YOUR precious chinese cartoon image board (and will continue to do so).

>Please get the fuck out of my board.
>there's no need to lie on my board
>get out of my board forever
>I'll repeat myself again, get the fuck out of my board.
>Get out of my board.

FYI this is cringe.

You should killyourself

>using the word cringe
>linking to the wikipedia page of a ridiculous "fallacy" coined by a no name in 1975
>continuing double spacing
>using FYI
>in your prior post, using a picture from google and having to rename it
>trying to argue that you're longer on Veeky Forums than somebody else
Dear redditor, get out now or at least lurk for 2-3 years before posting. Why are you on Veeky Forums anyways.

Yes, I did all of those things. Sorry to burst your bubble but not everyone posting on Veeky Forums is a NEET 'fagot' who lives on a farm, reads books on a phone and jerks off to loli porn. Your insistence that I am from reddit borders on paranoia. Either way, gotta go to bed now because I live in America and it's almost three in the morning.

All jokes aside though, if you really are broke and you want a decent reading device, an e-reader is very pleasant to read on and will save you a fuckload of money:

-pirate books
-backlit so you can easily read in low light settings
-tap to define words
-less cumbersome to hold in the hand than any book 300+ pgs

I got my first kindle probably 6 or 7 not long after they came out and have been using them since. Just upgraded to the Paperwhite in March and it's already paid for itself with the amount of books I've read on it. If you don't want to get one because you are worried that it's a "reddit meme", that's your call but you are missing out. Night.

Projecting quite a lot of things aren't you? Go to sleep and stop posting trash. Thanks for getting of my board, I hope you don't come back, fagot.

Cheers.

I can't write in the margins as I read, so I find them pretty much useless except for my guilty pleasures of crime fiction

How fucking dense do you have to be to actually believe any such study? Common sense hints at this: devices like tablets, with their access to the Internet, apps, games and other distractions may disrupt your concentration and make you indulge in said apps, games and the Internet instead of reading a book. That's it. A Kindle with the Airplane Mode on is like a plastic book with a dictionary, notepad and a shelf built-in.

You can make and store notes, highlight passages and even download passages that other people highlighted/commented on. You can even make clippings out of your favourite pages/quotes for further reference.

>I read my books on my small old smartphone
you have got to be joking

Why? It's a Huawei something, don't care much about smartphones. It's like 4-5 inches so it's alright to read on, it's battery life is long and I can take it everywhere with me.

Note-taking on them has been really tedious since they dropped the keyboard off Kindles. Maybe I'm just too old-fashioned. I've never been good with "texting" either.

Ah, the root of the problem: the faggot who keeps making these shit threads is a poor cunt whose only enjoyment in life is trying to crap on others because his life is, and always be, miserable. Thanks for the confirmation, poorfag.

This is some next level samefagging.

I've read on three or four different tablets or e-readers and it has always been less of an experience than reading a physical book

I really feel like if you've read a book on a screen, you haven't really read it

Yet shits constantly on kindles, hahhahah this is some next level shit, this is like performance trolling

Go back to your shitty phone, no one believes you, you fucking faggot. Having read on "3 or 4 tablets and e-readers" would require you to get out of the cockroach infested hellhole you live in with the decaying corpse of your mother, cannibalized and fucked to unrecognition.

Wow, you have issues

You should probably stick to e-readers, then. Lord knows what you'd do to actual books with that raging mental illness you've got

>oh my
>think of the poor books
>neet calling others mentally ill

Get out of my board faggot, this site isnt for redditors, youre not a true 4chanista if you cant handle simple verbal gore.

Rest assured, people as opposed to the kindle as the people on Veeky Forums are disfunctional autists. If you're a normal, balanced adult then you're either enjoying your Kindle, along side the physical books you own, or you don't own one and choose to exclusively read paper books.
What you won't be doing is prowling through a thread on a Cantonese image board feeding your teenage superiority or crying over buyers remorse.

Trash thread and OP should consider Kys.

>reading comprehension
Can't you re-read something you didn't understand ? This being said I wouldn't use a kindle to study, it's kinda slow for that

>comprehension
are you sure that's the word you're going for?

I can see how having a cover and a tactical object unique to the story would aid in associative memory formation.

The books I don't remember are the short novels. Magazine articles. The stuff I held once. And with e-books, I'm not seeing a cover every time I pick it up.

*tactile not tactical

/thread

why is there a man camouflaged in the books?

SPOOKY

Because owning assassin slaves will always be more impressive than owning a kindle.

>I read my books on my small old smartphone, it's alright.

Finally another brave one. As I've said before, a 5 inch phone with android is all you need. Cool Reader is an app customizable to the limit

It's to do with the hyperlinks and such. It affects the brain on a subconscious level.

If you get an offline only eReader, the comprehension should be the same.

>pro-tip: Get the freeware Briss java program for converting PDFs to a nice clean size (i.e removing the white border on mac/pc).

This guy gets it

I didn't make the thread though.

And being a wageslave is the most pathetic thing. I live a comfortable life earning 800 dollars a month passively from a website and living in the Philippines. I can spend all day every day reading books in the sun at the beach, while you sit in your office 9-5.

I have never shit on Kindles, all I said that it looks like a meme to me. Similar to Apple products you know? People that use them praise it but once you get one of these overpriced things, it's pretty much the same as your chinese octacore android smartphone for 150 dollars. But I guess reading and understanding a simple post is pretty difficult.

How do you make your passive income?

I want to do this.

Blackhatworld forums, a lot of research and testing and never giving up. I have a few blogs set up and am pretty good at SEO.

The biggest advice is just sticking with this shit and trying a lot and reading a lot. I lost a few hundred bucks just experimenting for the first half year until I understood what works.

wew

Look at me, I have so many books, I'm so well read (unlike you pleb)

I'm pretty sure the real reason you lose comprehension is because when you're looking at a screen you're usually multitasking heavily. Even if it's e-Ink, you're subconsciously thinking you're supposed to have 100 browser tabs open. Books are heavy and inconvenient so you don't even bother opening them unless you're serious about reading.

hahahahahaha i thought so. well let me tell you something. you and your raggedy-ass stories will NEVER make it. you want to know why? because you're a half-wit half-ass piece of shit who thinks he's some sort of genius in passivity, even though you've never amounted to anything and never will. you've convinced yourself that you're silently brilliant because whenever you actually try to sit down to write something nothing comes into that pretentious little shit-head brain of yours. 'oh, i guess today is more a day for suffering than a day for writing' is what you say each day to yourself. you spend weeks not writing a goddamned thing, and then one drunken evening you come home from a failed night out on the town and you sit your depressed ass down behind a laptop screen and squirt out some edgy watery shit prose onto your keyboard and think 'wow man this is so natural to me, like, writing is like soo my thing'. your life is shit. your writing is shit. you have pushed yourself into a persona of being a 'loner author' not because you thought it was the only thing you wanted to do, but because you watched californication a couple of times and read some bukowski poems and then you realized you didn't want to do any of the things in life that take effort, like working or actually getting a decent degree so you won't have to live on the street. you're lazy, you're untalented, and no matter how much you think you can change you will never be able to muster up the discipline to put in enough work to amount to ANYTHING and even if you did you would NEVER be published because you are a worthless piece of shit that only knows how to whine about his pathetic, half-effort life.

now get the fuck off my board

What does Veeky Forums recommend for an e-reader? I'm considering between a Kobo Glo HD or an nVidia Shield K1. I usually read on paper or my phone so I haven't experienced e-ink yet. My interest in the Shield is primarily because it can pull double duty for the few use cases I have for a tablet. The PPI appears comparable between the two devices. From what I understand, the Kobo devices (excluding their latest Aura One) have an SD slot and accept sideloading which is a must for me.

Thoughts?

just get a kindle paper white, I have one its great.

is it weird that I tend to read more pages per a session when im actually reading a physical book vs a ebook?
