It's transparently bad for a reason, because they know that if they do anything over the barest essentials of character development a guy is going to lose interest and go somewhere else. Most readers will understand if details aren't fully in place because frankly the stiffness of their cock will bridge the gaps in your narrative. Readers generally become dumber with the blood rushing to their cocks and if you're gonna write erotica you have to cater to that.
I think transformation stories are probably the best if you want to write a character development intensive story that is also erotic, because the entire erotic appeal of these stories is the story of that character developing into something else. It allows you to mix erotic details together with more banal points of development. I think that's the key to doing development in an erotic story, you need to include a steady stream of tits to pull the reader along by his cock. Even if you do something hackish like dream sequences to revive his faltering cock.
