While I was taking geology at uni we, people from the department, would often go out for drinks at the end of the day. One of my peers brought along her roommate who was hospitality management or nutrition or some other such major. She starts going on and on about the healing properties and the different auras of various natural crystals. She won't shut up about it, she thinks since we are all geo people this will get our dicks harder than corundum.
Everyone is just letting it happen, but I had never met this girl before, so I guess I didn't know the drill. She pulls out this necklace calls it "Blue Sandstone", starts telling us about how it must have formed in some mineral rich location and after eons in the ground it absorbed so much energy that now it radiates it out and keeps her grounded. Isn't it amazing how something natural can be so beautiful, look how it sparkles and shines it reflects from all angles just like someone who is grounded should. I wish more people would embrace the power of natural gemstones....like you all do.
I can't take it, so I just tell her straight up, that it's glass, normal man-made glass. She is probably older than that hunk of garbage silica, in fact I'm pretty sure it is a Venetian method from centuries ago to sell waste glass. It has no crystal habit, it has no natural energy, it does less to keep you grounded than the beer glass in my hand (at least that has beer in it).
She got pretty pissed. I don't get it are we just supposed to let people be wrong?
Nah man never stop reking those newage rock retards. > people unironcally believe that rocks have mystical powers Literally a religious belief, they should be purged with the rest of them
Caleb Moore
nah bud these crystals are real my crystal glows when I JO with a bro
Benjamin Adams
come on tell us how pissed she was, I want some details on her world getting shattered.
wtf does grounded even mean? Can't I just stick a conducting wire up my ass and into the ground and call it a day?
Liam Price
you should tell her. girl could spend her whole life believing that trash if no one tells her. >it happend to my mom :^)
If crystals don't have powers, then why does the government grow giant crystal pyramids?
Jeremiah Reed
Same thing for when people call astronomy astrology. They might not even mean it, but still holy fuck..
Brody Mitchell
I'm a geologist, and my interest in Geology led to my mom getting interested in minerals.
She now sells minerals to new-age hippie fucks on the Internet, through Etsy. These people that buy this shit are dumb as bricks, but it's good money. For example, some Ajoite inclusions in Quartz crystals sell for thousands of dollars. They go to mineral shows / conferences in Tucson and Denver (Denver is much better by the way if you ever consider going to one of these), and buy large lots of specimens for discounted prices. Then, you sell them individually over the Internet and make quite a lot of profit. Most of the things she sell go for >$100, but occasionally she lists something much more expensive like large Ajoite in quartz.
It's good money, because the people that buy this shit are literal mouthbreathing retards who believe crystals heal all sorts of maladies and illnesses. They don't understand the science of mineralogy / petrology and won't listen to it anyways if you tried to explain it to them rationally. They believe it no matter what, placebo or not, because the beliefs themselves are incredibly irrational in the first place.
Pic related, some of her Ajoites from her own personal collection. The one in the middle is worth a few thousand $.
Kayden Watson
>government grow giant cryatal pyramids Source?
Eli Moore
This is why memes like Neil Tyson and Bill Nye have to exist. People like them try to bring science to the general public and illuminate their minds, in hope that they will not fall for traps like your mom's. Veeky Forums hates pop sci but the truth is that it is needed.
Juan Wood
Are there some poisonous minerals you're allowed to sell? It'd be win-win: You either make some dumb cunt suffer, or they'll see the error of their ways.
Brody Thompson
My mom herself insists she doesn't believe in all the healing crap, as I've explained to her multiple times why it's bullshit, but she is very prone to new-age nonsense. Her listings are full of new-age crap, she doesn't specifically say that crystals will heal illnesses or anything in her listings, but says they are good for meditation and other crap like that.
She is into a lot of other similar crap like having Budda statues everywhere in their house, even though she's not a buddhist nor does she understand the religion at all. She also eats a shit ton of expensive supplements that cost a fortune, and only shops at whole foods / only eats organic, gluten free bullshit even though she doesn't have celiac disease, but maintains that gluten made her feel sick (despite her probably eating it the vast majority of her life without problems). All imaginary problems that are slowly eating away at my dad's retirement money.
I mean she makes money selling crystals, but my dad has probably invested ~$100,000+ in her store over the past 2.5 years and she has only made I think ~$55,000 back, but she has a shit ton of inventory she hasn't sold. She's only sold 1000 things so far in two years.
These pics are about 1.5 years old too, she has a shit ton of minerals in her own personal collection as well, probably at least 10,000+ individual specimens as well as a lot of larger specimens including a massive quartz crystal that is about 1.5" tall and weighs about 50 pounds.
Ryan Peterson
>My dysfunctional geology nerd friends are single and lonely. >My dysfunctional roommate really admires geologists. I don't blame them for trying, OP. It probably just slipped their mind that you are one of the only people in university who would rather be right about something than get laid.
Robert Green
Maybe pyramids have power.
Mason Barnes
>crystals don't have powers
Connor Diaz
you're mom is a lost cause like the people she sells to, you can't sweet talk your way out of that fact, sorry.
Christian Ortiz
The problem with this that mostly, it is much much easier to produce an endless stream of bullshit that it is to dispute it. Also, idiots won't listen to reason anyway.
Jordan Harris
To store the souls of the children they raped at that Clinton pedo island, obviously.
Benjamin Sanders
Haha
Wyatt Thomas
>She pulls out this necklace calls it "Blue Sandstone" downblouse pix or else bullshit
Jayden Thompson
I don't know man. Maybe she enchanted them with cosmic and earth runes.
>fucking new age hippies and their "everything is magical" bullshit.
Angel Jackson
It actually looks like some kind of layered chalcedony (agate) that has been cut and polished into a double-terminated quartz """crystal"""
Chalcedony is cheap and easy to come by, so I wouldn't be surprised if this is the case.
Another common thing people do with this type of jewelry is they take large quantities of really cheap, shitty quartz that wouldn't sell on its own, and they electroplate it, like pic related and sell it for a decent amount of money.
Jaxson Allen
I used to do it, but now i just ignore it. Its just too mentally tiring to argue with these people and then deal with them hating me for correcting them.
Last time i did it >girl thats a friend of my friends doing a 'detox' >5 cucumbers blended with shit >still eats the exact same shit, but adds the cucumber drink after every meal >wont shut up about how great it is and how much weight she is going to loose with this >'fat is all the toxins in the body, detoxing allows the liver to excrete all the fat into your urine' >Cant take it and tell her, politely, that theres no such thing as a detox, and she wont loose any weight, that its good she is getting some vegetables in, but its not a magic cure >later friend talks to me alone >'stop being so rude user, just because you went to university doesnt mean you know everything.' Actually i just realized i haven't spoken with that guy in over 3 years.
Isaiah Watson
Crystals really do vibrate really fucking fast
some can melt ice faster than your finger
The perception and their vibration make crystals interesting to more 'enlightened folk'
Sebastian Nelson
When subjected to an electrical current you mean. Quartz for example is used in quartz clocks / watches as an electronic oscillator.
no, crystals vibrate because they aren't at zero kelvin. Some can melt ice faster than your finger because they have been warmed up hotter than your finger. For more info see phonon spectra.
Levi Fisher
Get her to wear an uranium crystal, that will release its energy real nice on her.
Brayden Ortiz
>I can't take it, so I just tell her straight up, that it's glass, normal man-made glass. She is probably older than that hunk of garbage silica, in fact I'm pretty sure it is a Venetian method from centuries ago to sell waste glass. It has no crystal habit, it has no natural energy, it does less to keep you grounded than the beer glass in my hand (at least that has beer in it).
C'mon man this is such an easy question for someone studying geology. It's armchair level psychology. Most people don't like being told they are wrong and much more important than that, you're making something she treasured very much look simple, superstitious and tedious. Yes, I know, it is what I just described, but look, human relations are not always about proving people wrong. It's about understanding how others feel and reacting appropriately.
Logan Cooper
Well yes, by that definition every single molecule of every single thing is vibrating as long as its not absolute zero. That does not mean that crystals are giving off "energies" or some other pseudo-scientific nonsense.
Jeremiah Reed
On the face of it OP comes off as enlightened and superior but the placebo effect is real, scientifically proven and girls are far more interesting with a bit of mystique attached.
Dominic Ortiz
There is still motion at absolute zero.
Luke Parker
Oh man can you even buy those? A single crystal of uranium would be really cool. I mean I know it's just gonna look like a shiny piece of metal, but still giant single crystals get me hard.
Nicholas Wright
Naturally occurring Uranium is found in a lot of rocks. I think most natural is U-238 which isn't that dangerous compared to the other isotopes of Uranium.
There are many minerals that contain Uranium within their crystal structure, so you could probably wear a Crystal that has Uranium in it, such as Torbernite.
Leo Clark
can I lick it then?
Grayson Moore
I hear the same shit about electronics and aviation, especially stuff about wireless and chemtrails. The good thing is I'm generally successful in convincing people that bullshit is bullshit.
David Stewart
Meant to add, successful in everything but fitness, where everybody has a different bogeyman making them gain weight or have bad joints or whatever. They insist that the info they get from their friends who've been trying to lose weight for 20 years is better than the info they get from people who have actually lost weight.
Mason Nguyen

Landon Garcia
>stop being so rude user, just because you went to university doesnt mean you know everything
I dropped out of college and this still makes my blood boil. Do they not realize that you learn critical thinking in academia? No one can know everything, but people can learn how to sift through utter bullshit. At the end of the day people will believe what they want, but it's the smug "just let them believeeee" assholes that really get me.
Andrew Johnson
>She got pretty pissed. I don't get it are we just supposed to let people be wrong?
Pretty much, yes. People are taking it very personally when they're misinformed, and it doesn't help when folks treat stupid people like they don't deserve to live. So people are getting very defensive. It sucks, but ...
Angel Baker
If you don't at least attempt to educate people, you're part of the problem. It's up to them how they take it.
Slickly-produced, visually appealing nonsense is incredibly dangerous. This is brain poison, gently swaying its listeners into believing things that even rudimentary investigation show are untrue.
Connor Roberts
Spirit science is great though. I mean who else would come up with space jews.
Leo Miller
to be fair, they are pretty much magic
It pisses me off

Why do you have to be such an autist OP. Fucking retards the lot of you
Luke Ward
That's just Dick Unity
Aaron Sullivan
Those are gorgeous mate. I a collection of some pyrite specimens.
I use to work at a rock and mineral shop to pay through my college and those new age fags are the worst. They speak of enlightenment and powers and all this crap to stroke their ego. Worse you get some people who only use rocks for medical conditions. I'm glad that there is a market that rips them off because if they belive some heat treated garbage is mystical more to them.
Isaac Morris
Picture the conversation like a game of chess, logically box them in to where they are forced to realize something themselves. Don't attempt with drunkards or individuals prone to being aggro, such as soldiers or police officers
Julian King
I think the idea is to have more tact when you inform them.
The Japanese are a very socialistic culture, as opposed to individualistic. Per etiquette, when faced with a misinformed or ignorant guy, they will always attempt to communicate in such a way as to allow him to realize his indiscretion or error on his own (if not at that moment, then later when he thinks on it), so as not to embarrass him in front of others. Instead of his scorn or jealousy/impotence, they receive his respect for their consideration.
I think it's not a bad thing to try if you want to maintain good relationships. Not always easy though, sometimes you just have to hope they pick up on it later. I mean, it's not like you win anything either way, and you can't say you didn't try.

That would work in a such a society. Alas in the west and America in particular, too many people believe having an opinion is enough to justify their position, and still react badly to being informed.
Pleb answer: A quadruple bypass double take from an unexpected question from a reporter. >Try the Chai!
Jason Lopez
The problem with this kind of stuff is the placebo effect. It doesn't matter if the crystal has magical abilities or not if she believes hard enough that it keeps her grounder it will. Honestly historical magic is probably all just crazy placebo effects anyway
Ryder Perez
Hello my autistic friend, the short answer is yes.
In this particular situation I can tell the female was particularly attractive if she can bullshit about gemstones to a group of geology students. They wanted the attractive women to hang around and you likely scared her off. You're undoubtedly the bane of your peers from that.
Sage. I'm pretty sure this is a bullshit post (even though it could easily be real) because if you're normal enough that people will invite you out for drinks then you'd definitely know that you don't piss off hot chicks.
William Bell
>it's good money
>no she's wasted almost 50 thousand dollars and is another fifty thousand in debt currently
which one is it, user?
Jordan Thompson
Not really in debt considering my dad is wealthy enough to afford her "hobby," but like I said, she has made $50,000 of a $100,000 investment, but she has so much inventory that she hasn't sold yet that she will probably make a profit off it within another year or two, and she still has enough inventory to make probably 5x what they invested since they bought a lot of crystals in bulk pallets at mineral conventions. You buy a big lot for cheap and sell each one individually for profit.
Jackson Lopez
You're wrong OP you faggot
Those cystals do have magic power
When you compliment them you get blowjobs
Not that you would know
Robert Martinez
>being this much of a normalfag
Joshua Ross
There's a limit though. It's annoying when someone is looking me in the eye trying their darndest to convince me of something that is just absolutely bullshit. It feels insulting and humiliating, even if they have great intentions.
Elijah Ortiz
Trying to teach people the truth is for plebs. What's much more useful, and ultimately more intellectually rewarding, is to try to understand why they believe something that a minimal amount of research would disprove. Understand why people believe bullshit, and you can create your own bullshit more effectively (see and for more details).
Also note that is correct that you probably gave up a great opportunity for some hippy poon.
tl;dr, it's much more useful to you to let people believe bullshit. It's one less person that you have to compete against.

I have the luxury of talking to many of these idiots on a daily basis ironically some of them are graduates and have masters degrees and everything. Had a girl one time tell me that "sulfates cause cancer, its why you should avoid wine and foods with sulfates" and she's in complete disbelief that the body needs sulfates for specific biochemical interactions because she read some "study" that sulfates were bad having no idea about what they were used for in the body
Zachary Lewis
You really shouldn't be afraid to just call these people fucking retarded and they're believing in nonsense
Anthony Stewart

Sebastian Gomez
Your're wrong... Because if enough people believe the bullshit it gets a momentum of its own. It's all fun and game memeing this crap around, but eventually the gov if going to pour cash into crystal "research" because of popular demand... This kind of shit is why people are not vaccinating their kids, and don't be an edgy mofo and say they're clearing the gene pool...
Carson Ward
I'm not worried. There's plenty of autists out there who push for the truth. As long as there's a large enough bulk of truthseekers, then there's plenty of cover to push for whatever you think is profitable. Basically, as long as there's academics pushing what's actually true then I never need to worry about that
>vaccines I won't say that they're clearing the gene pool, but there's a sizeable bulk of people pushing for mandatory vaccination. Again, not worried.
