Not all English words need to have a masculine and feminine; author is neuter but just has a masculine ending.
Here's a thing: Emperor and Actor both came into common usage during a time when English was still a gendered language. Author came into common usage about 150 years after English had largely lost its gender. So while archaic artificats such as 'authoress' exist, they are nineteenth century inventions designed to denote the womens lit movement. Etymologically speaking, when the word Author was adopted into English it was intentioned to cover both genders (much like Teacher or Chef).
