It's all hit and miss. Your best option is to go to a good whiskey bar and try a little of everything. It's not cheap, but it is a hell of a lot cheaper than buying bottles you might not like. Just don't assume you like anything you drink after your third drink. Everything is delicious after your third drink. But with enough time, you will find many kinds you like at a fraction of the price you pay buying each individual bottle. Plus you actually get to leave your house and drink with other people, which is something most of these faggots don't ever do.

Drank a really interesting japanese whiskey at a whiskey expo last year. Was a really good experience. I tried Nikka Coffee Malt and some others from japan.
The coffee malt was interesting to say the least, in a good way.

Macallan is lovely, the 18yo is godly. Good malt can be found everywhere in Scotland, and tis alright to have preferences.

Islay Mist Deluxe is a nice medium peaty smoky whisky. Very cheap and tastes like a mini Ardbeg or Laphroaig. Exceedingly smooth drink which punches way above its price.

I'm a big fan of ardbeg. They've got to be my favorite islay distillery. Laphroaig is nice enough but I find it very peaty indeed, even for an islay.

Japanese whiskeys tend to be fine quality, very tasty, but moderately expensive for their quality. I tend to compare them favorably to high end Johnny Walker, in the sense that it's a fine if somewhat inoffensive whiskey for a high price point.

I bought a bottle of Ardbeg 10 as my first scotch and while I don't dislike it it's very intense. Perhaps too intense for someone like me who usually drinks bourbon. I want to like it, but it's just so complex and different from what I'm used to. I'll definitely finish the bottle though. Can't let a good whisky go to waste.

My problem was that I grew out of bourbon very quickly, now I even have some more expensive bourbons left when even cheap blended, smokey scotch will do the trick for me now.

It's generally not recommended to start with an Islay, as the strong flavors can be difficult and can turn off a new whisky drinker. Auchentoshen is an unpeated whisky, so it's an easy, uncomplicated drink. Get your feet wet on that and work your way through the popular low to mid range whiskies like Glenfiddich, Macallans.

Start with beer m8, its gonna be a rough ride otherwise, trust me

You're gonna want to taste around a lot with that virgin palette of yours so you can find out what you like. If you really want some kind of home bar I'd suggest getting a kentucky bourbon, vodka, a white tequila, a mild gin, and a jamaican rum all in the mid price range - i.e. less than $30/bottle but well over ~$10 gutrot. With some bar staples like sweet and dry vermouth, simple syrup, angostura bitters, club soda, tonic water, and some limes you can make a ton of different classic cocktails.

It tasted a lot less sweet and more funky at the beginning. But it's mellowed a lot and lost quite a bit of that funk and is sweeter in a good way now.
